‘Dexter: New Blood’: Debra Morgan and the Guilty Conscience That Could

0

Dexter: New Blood is in full swing, and there’s one character we need to talk about: Debra Morgan. Since the news broke of her return, Deb has been one of the most highly anticipated aspects of this show. Viewers last saw her when she was very dead, and Dexter dumped her body in the ocean. So, the big question was how Deb would return. It’s a simple answer, really. Like Harry before her, Deb serves as a personification of Dexter’s (now Jim Lindsay) thoughts. From the premiere episode alone, it’s clear Deb is quite different from Harry. Up through now, we didn’t have such a wide picture of her role. As the series is currently airing, we still don’t know the FULL picture. But in just three episodes, Debra provides an intense look into Jim Lindsay’s psyche.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

From a Whisper

Seacia Pavao/Showtime

Deb returns in the beginning of the premiere, popping up throughout the episode. Even with the early moments of reintroduction, it’s obvious she won’t be in Jim’s life the way Harry was. Rather than a guide, Jim seems much more haunted by Deb. Those early scenes in the cabin hold a certain heaviness and loneliness. (Did anyone else feel that stab of pain when she disappeared from the table?) It doesn’t take a genius to see that Dexter misses his sister. After all, she was a massive and important part of his life. But more than simply missing her, Deb quickly becomes a manifestation of everything Jim is trying to suppress – his guilt, his fears, and his doubts. Soon, that becomes exceedingly apparent.

First, one of the most striking aspects about Deb is the way she personifies Dexter’s lingering guilt. Remember that freaky ice creature (aka his Dark Passenger personified)? Even in his dreams (well…nightmares), Dexter is helpless to save Deb. He couldn’t then and can’t now. Deb only reminds him what he did. When he wakes, he remembers how Deb relied on him. She tells him it was better she went first. Dexter was more equipped to live a life without his sibling. However, that doesn’t mean he feels any less miserable about it.

Meanwhile, Harrison returns. For a moment, Dexter is ready to reunite with his son. That is until Deb emphasizes his guilt about the people in his life who died because of him.

“Doakes. LaGuerta. Rita … Me.”

He then sees Harrison bleeding from the chest. Deb evokes that previous fear that prompted Dexter to abandon Harrison in the first place. So, what does he do? He turns Harrison away. He can’t take that risk. Of course, it’s only a matter of time until he finds Harrison and brings him home.

To a Scream

dexter new blood deb
Seacia Pavao/SHOWTIME

By episode 2, Deb is quite literally in Dexter’s face about Harrison. She believes there are only two viable options here: 1) Dexter will kill Harrison. 2) If he doesn’t kill Harrison, he will severely mess this kid up. She drives the point home by forcing a bullet down Dexter’s throat. Later, she laughs at him, citing that he’s being ridiculous for thinking Harrison won’t find out about the whole “Daddy kills people.”

Deb is still on Dexter about killing. This time, there’s the added factor of Harrison. In the original run of Dexter, he often worried about how his darkness would affect Harrison. In this episode, we see just how intense this fear really is. First, she laughs at him as he covers his tracks, thinking he’s only fooling himself. But he brushes it off, denies everything she says. A little later, though, it hits him. Deb makes sure of it as she shouts:

“You f*cking love that you’re getting away with murder. You can’t wait to kill again. You are a f*cking serial killer. You are gonna fail this boy a thousand different ways because of it.”

It’s after this that Dexter finally snaps and screams back, yelling at her to stop. On some level, he knows she’s right. Even so, he can’t afford to believe it, not after 10 years of not seeing Harrison. Deb reiterates Dexter’s gnawing paranoia that Harrison will learn the truth. Those seeds of doubt bloom into poisonous flowers as he tries to remember how to be a father. Every “what if” leaps to the surface again. And through it all, Deb is there to ensure he never forgets the mistakes of the past.

And the Shadow of The Dark Whatever

dexter new blood deb
Seacia Pavao/SHOWTIME

In episode 3, we begin to see a small shift in how Deb reacts to Dexter. One of the most blatant indicators comes when she shoves a gun (yes, a GUN) in his face. The search for Matt is heating up. ILPD brings in search dogs. Deb is absolutely livid. Sure, Jim creates a false (and temporary) scent trail. But still, Deb remains adamant that Jim is and always will be Dexter Morgan. Not only that, but Jim also still must deal with Matt’s body. He needs a more permanent solution. He can’t have anyone discovering Matt’s body. And he tells Deb as much. Only, Deb isn’t convinced that this doesn’t also mean he wants to kill again.

For all her scathing reminders to Dexter, Deb never eggs him on. But it’s important to remember that this isn’t the real Deb. This is Dexter doing one of the things he does best: compartmentalizing. It’s that ever-present guilt from his past refusing to take a back seat. The part of him that can never forget who he is but doesn’t want to give in. Still, old habits resurface (thanks, Matt). So, what’s so interesting about Deb is how it almost seems that Dexter is hoping she will give him permission. But will Deb be the one to do that? Maybe he’ll completely ignore her and give in to the whims of that old playmate. (Read: definitely. This is DEXTER we’re talking about.) Regardless, this tiny shift sets up an interesting dynamic moving forward.

Seven episodes remain, so there’s plenty of time to see how this new dynamic with Dexter and Deb evolves, even if she’s only a product of his guilty subconscious. With Harrison now in play and a persistent search for Matt, the inner battle between Jim and Dexter rages on. How will Jim’s relationships be affected? Will Dexter begin to sway Deb? Or will she keep pushing back against his homicidal urges? How long until Dexter kills again? We just have to wait and see.

Dexter: New Blood airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on Showtime. Keep up with our weekly recaps here. Find the rest of our coverage, including our spoiler-free review, here.

Top 10 ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Fan Favorite Moments

0

“Once upon a time, in a faraway land” is where one of Disney’s most popular animated classics began. Today Beauty and the Beast is celebrating its 30th anniversary! This movie has touched the lives of countless children and adults alike with its “tale as old as time.” Now without further ado, we shall take a journey back to our childhoods and relive some of our favorite moments.

10. Bonjour/I Want Adventure In The Great Wide Somewhere

Disney

“Bonjour” is the song that opens the movie and introduces viewers to this little town where our story takes place. The song itself is light, bouncy and a great fast-paced way to quickly let us see how this world works and how Belle is an outsider. The villagers go about their daily lives, doing the same tasks over and over and Belle longs for adventure and seeks it out in her books. After Belle is proposed to by Gaston we get to truly see her dreams of a world outside what society has in store for her. “I want adventure in the great wide somewhere, I want it more than I can tell.” It is clear as Belle heads for a hilltop singing about her dreams that she will not settle for just being a wife.

9. Gaston

Disney

It is no secret that Disney has a talent for giving their villains really amazing songs. When it comes to Gaston’s signature theme, it is no different. In one song we learn how vain, narcissistic, misogynistic, and surprisingly calculating Gaston is. It starts off with his sidekick LeFou trying to cheer him up after being publicly humiliated by Belle. With lines that have become infamous like, “I use antlers in all of my decorating,” viewers might be quick to write him off as a self-obsessed pretty boy, but when Gaston starts to reveal his plan to have Belle’s father committed to an asylum, we see how far he is willing to go to get what he wants.

8. Wolf Attack

Disney

This particular scene might not seem important to viewers at first but it has a very significant place in the building relationship between Belle and Beast. After Beast gets angry with Belle she decides she cannot stay in the castle one more minute and takes off for the woods on her horse. Soon she realizes her mistake as a wolf pack descends on and attacks her. When it seems like she will meet an unkind fate the Beast roars in and saves her! On their return to the castle Belle tends to the Beast’s wounds and they finally start to see a little something in each other that may lead to more.

7. Prologue Scene

Disney

This prologue, in my opinion, is the most beautiful one Disney has ever done. As we hear the narrator’s voice begin the story the camera slowly pushes in on the castle that is nestled in a picturesque forest. Soon we see absolutely gorgeous stain glass windows that show us how an unkind prince was cursed. These stain glass windows have become a trademark for Beauty and the Beast and are easily one of its most well known characteristics. Soon the windows fade into the real world and we see the Beast’s claws rip through a portrait of his old human form. As the prologue comes to an end we hear one of my favorite lines from the movie, “For who could ever learn to love a beast.”

6. The West Wing

Disney

One of the first rules that is made very clear to Belle upon her arrival at Beast’s castle is to stay away from the west wing. We all know how well a person who seeks adventure listens. While strolling around the castle with Lumiere and Cogsworth, Belle’s curiosity gets the better of her and she sneaks away. Soon she is met with deep slash marks down the walls, portraits and curtains torn to pieces. This is the one place in the castle where the evidence of the sadness, turmoil, and anger the Beast has felt because of the curse is clear. Suddenly a faint red glow catches her eye and she sees the rose under its glass dome with the fallen petals. She lifts the glass to get a better look, viewers may find themselves yelling “no” as she reaches to touch the rose. With a shocking growl the glass dome is slammed down before she has the chance and the Beast’s angry face comes into view. His control is lost as he yells at Belle about what she could have done and soon she runs in fear. As soon as she is out of view you can see the regret clearly in the Beast’s face. This scene is key in understanding the Beast’s character and all he has experienced through this curse and basically why he is so angry with himself.

5. Something There That Wasn’t There Before

Disney

Every romance needs a good montage and this song fills that spot perfectly. As we hear the first few notes of “Something There,” we see Belle and the Beast trying to enjoy a nice meal together. We get a glimpse at how the Beast trys to be better for Belle and she meets him halfway. Whose heart didn’t melt a little when the Beast attempted to feed the birds? Viewers watch as little moments lead to the two seeing each other in a different light that may be leading toward something more. The snowball fight scene is simply adorable. While Gaston frowned on Belle’s reading, the Beast happily lets her read to him by the fireplace. Their growing affections towards one another doesn’t seem rushed and seeing the Beast smile will make anyone root for the couple.

4. Be Our Guest

Disney

You know this song absolutely had to be on this list! When you mention Beauty and the Beast, “Be Our Guest” is normally the song that will spring to people’s minds first. Lumiere and Mrs. Potts convince Belle to leave her room for some food. Much to Cogsworth’s dismay the entire castle sees this as their first opportunity in years to entertain someone. With Lumiere taking center stage, Belle is treated to a feast for the eyes as dishes, utensils, napkins, and cups sing and dance for her. As a child watching this movie, we all wanted to taste the gray stuff to see if it really was delicious. When the crescendo hits even Cogsworth finds himself joining in the festivities! Viewers get to see how many members of the castle staff has been effected by the curse and how long they have been waiting for someone to break it. This is the song that you find yourself singing while cooking for family or friends because it stays with you long after the credits have rolled.

3. The Library Surprise

Disney

When I asked fans about their favorite Beauty and the Beast moments this scene came up a lot! Personally this is my favorite moment in the film. As a child sitting in the theater for the very first time, watching this scene affected me in a way that sticks with me to this day. When the Beast realizes he cares for Belle deeply he decides to give her a gift that will mean the most to her. The excitement is clear on his face as he leads her into the dark room asking her to keep her eyes closed. As the curtains are pulled back and Belle opens her eyes we see one of the most beautiful and impressive libraries ever shown on film. Belle gasps and the audience can see that she feels truly happy and at home in the castle now that she has something of her own. Four-year-old me had stars in her eyes seeing that library and I decided when I grew up, I was going to be a librarian, specifically of the Beast’s library. Ever since then, book worms everywhere have strived, dreamed, and sought after of a library like this.

2. A Tale As Old As Time

Disney

Disney has created many cinematically beautiful moments over the years but few have matched this ballroom scene. As the Beast and Belle greet each other on the staircase, viewers watch as this iconic dance begins with the first few notes of “Tale As Old As Time.” Angela Lansbury’s Mrs. Potts was the perfect choice for this sweet song that recaps how far this couple has come and how deeply they have grown to care for each other. As they enter the ballroom it is clear Disney’s animators outdid themselves. Whether it is the gorgeous architecture, the ceiling mural, the windows showcasing the night sky or Belle’s iconic dress this scene is a feast for the eyes. Seeing how unsure Beast is as he first takes Belle in his arms soon melts away as they spin confidently around the ballroom looking into each other’s eyes. We all felt similar to Lumiere and Cogsworth as they look on so proud of the couple and how sweet they are together. It is easy to see why so many fans of the film have used this song in their own love stories.

1. Beast’s Transformation

Disney

Choosing a number one moment was not easy but at the same time I can’t see it being anything else. We have followed Belle and Beast through their first meeting, angry outbursts, fearless rescues, growing feelings, and the selfless act of letting go. This final act of the movie is action packed with the attack on the castle lead by Gaston, who mortally wounds the Beast as Belle tries to stop him. As the rain falls we watch the Beast take his last moments to express how happy it made him that Belle returned so he could see her one last time. We see the Beast’s paw falling away, making Belle realize that he is gone, and that she waited too late to tell him how she felt. With tears streaming down her face and the words “I love you,” we see the last petal fall from the rose as Lumiere, Cogsworth, and Mrs. Potts realize their master is gone.

Suddenly streaks of light begin to fall with the rain around Belle as she lays crying over the Beast’s body. Soon his body begins to float slowly into the air as a glow surrounds him. With his cloak wrapping around him viewers see as the Beast’s paws transform into human hands and feet as light encompasses him. Fully transformed, the Beast is now Prince Adam and Belle isn’t sure what she just witnessed. It is only when she gazes into his blue eyes that she knows so well that she recognizes her Beast. With a kiss, the castle and servants all turn back into their previous forms as we get to witness a classic happily ever after.

It was such a joy to get to revisit my favorite Disney classic for the 30th anniversary. Over the last three decades the influence of Beauty and the Beast can be seen clearly in pop culture. With countless retellings and remakes, people just love the story of a beauty and a beast falling in love. Belle showed girls everywhere that loving books and thinking for yourself is a powerful and important thing in this world. I will always credit this movie for helping to cement my love of books and libraries at such a young age. If you’d like to have your own 30th anniversary celebration, you can find Beauty and the Beast currently streaming on Disney+. Also I highly recommend trying the official gray stuff recipe from Disney, it is indeed delicious. Make sure to follow Nerds & Beyond to stay up to date on any and all news!

‘Dexter: New Blood’ Recap: Episode 3 “Smoke Signals”

0

This week on Dexter: New Blood, the search for Matt continues. Now, there’s a break in the case, and we’re a little nervous. Meanwhile, viewers meet Molly, and Harrison starts school. Read on to find out what happens in “Smoke Signals.”

Warning: Not even smoke can mask these spoilers. Proceed with caution.

Fast Times at Iron Lake High

It’s time for Harrison to start school! He and Jim meet with Principal Strode. She’s concerned about Harrison’s inconsistent grades, clearly judging Jim for not being a present father. Deb pops in to drive that point home. In any case, Harrison is mostly ready to start classes. But first, he needs to take a placement test. A bit later, he does. And our boy passes with flying colors. Principal Strode, however, thinks Harrison cheated. So, she brings Jim back, who doesn’t do a great job at defending his son’s honor. Harrison agrees to retake the test with a proctor. And he ends up getting a higher score the second time.

The next day, Harrison learns that Zach and co. are catfishing a kid named Ethan. During lunch, Harrison tells Ethan and helps him plan his payback. (Don’t worry, it’s not that bad … ) When their plan works, Zach moves to attack Ethan. But Harrison stops him, grabbing Zach by the throat, threatening to keep doing it if he doesn’t leave Ethan alone.

That night, Ethan FaceTimes Harrison to thank him for earlier. Ethan shows Harrison some drawings he did of Zach et al. And … they’re disturbing, to say the least. Most of them showcase those who bullied him in the midst of gruesome deaths, all by Ethan’s hand. If this bothers Harrison, he doesn’t say so. In fact, he appears to be more intrigued than anything. Uh oh.

Don’t Go Breaking My Case

ILPD continues their search for Matt. As Jim and Harrison get ready to leave for the high school, Angela reveals they have a break in the case. It turns out ILPD has surveillance cameras set up in the woods. Luckily for Jim, the cameras only capture heat signatures. Kurt is livid, and Angela tries to calm him down. They plan to talk to everyone who was in contact with Matt, including Jim. Meanwhile, Jim offers to pull hunting licenses to get a lead on who the mystery heat signature is. But he’s not worried (yet) because he knows he’s not on the list.

When they get back to the cabin, CSI arrives. A man, Damien, is there to assess the scene; he’s their blood guy. Jim, Kurt, Angela, and Teddy head over with Damien. They watch on as Damien recreates what happened, and even Jim can’t deny this guy is good. Damien takes a blood sample from the scene, then a swab from Kurt. He’s going to run a familial DNA test to confirm the blood belongs to Matt.

Later, the results come in. Angela breaks the news to Kurt that it’s a match. With this new info, ILPD is going to bring in search dogs the next day. Deb is NOT pleased. Again, she berates Dexter. She pulls a gun (yes, a GUN!) on him, intent on making sure he remembers who (and what) he really is. (Looks like someone’s feeling the pressure.)

The Coverup Part 2

dexter new blood episode 3
Seacia Pavao/SHOWTIME

Jim finds himself once again needing to cover his trail. While Harrison’s asleep, Jim digs up Matt and removes his vest. Jim runs around the grounds, spreading the scent to follow the trail he managed to concoct in the previous episode. The next day, the search dogs arrive—Jim’s clear for now. In the meantime, Logan wants to interview him.

First, Jim needs to drop Harrison off at school. Deb appears, reminding Dexter the false trail won’t last forever. She offers suggestions on what to do with Matt’s body, including (in a truly wild moment) a woodchipper. Dexter tells her it needs to be a long-term solution. You know, so Matt’s body isn’t discovered. But Deb isn’t convinced he’s not planning to kill again. (And neither are we.) He doesn’t have time to worry about that now, though. It’s time for his interview with Logan. Jim cooperates, but it’s clear he’s getting nervous (same).

Free from potential self-incrimination, Jim goes to work. He examines a map and finds a potential dump spot for Matt’s body: the iron mine. When he hikes up to the mine, it really does seem perfect. Until a bear shows up. Guess it’s time for a plan C.

Up in Smoke

dexter new blood episode 3
Seacia Pavao/SHOWTIME

After school and Harrison’s whole “I’m gonna choke this kid” incident, Audrey gives Harrison a ride. They stop by Gig’s shop first to pick up stuff for dinner. Gig mentions the white buck still in the back, which upsets Audrey. They go look at it, and Harrison suggests they do something before sanitation does. On their way home, Audrey’s car breaks down. Audrey assesses the damage, and Harrison goes to call for help. And who should show up but Edward Olsen. He offers help that Audrey refuses, reminding him she knows who he is. He’s annoyingly understanding, throwing in a bit of guilt trip before leaving.

Later, Harrison and Jim join Audrey and Angela for dinner. Audrey tells them about Molly, but Angela switches topics. She mentions that she got a call from someone on the reservation, Abraham. Audrey explains the buck deserves better. So, she, Harrison, and Abraham made a plan. Soon, they all go to the reservation, where they honor the buck with a bonfire. As they watch, we hear Dexter’s narration and find that he still yearns for closeness with others, especially Harrison. As he and Harrison get ready to leave, Jim apologizes for not defending Harrison. He promises that now he’s on Harrison’s side. Harrison appreciates that, saying, “Thanks, Dad.” (Who has the tissues?)

Tender moments aside, the bonfire smoke gives Jim an idea for Matt. He brings the body to the town’s incinerator stack and burns it. Ash spews everywhere (ew), falling like snow. When Jim drives back through town, he spots a very drunk (and … happy?) Kurt. Jim talks with him and learns that Kurt FaceTimed with Matt (HUH??). Of course, Matt is very dead, his ashes literally falling around them. So, what’s Kurt’s game here?

Along Came Molly

dexter new blood episode 3
Seacia Pavao/SHOWTIME

This week, we finally meet Molly! She initially arrives when the search dogs do. Molly introduces herself to Angela first, eager to help with the search. At this point, though, Angela doesn’t know Molly is a true-crime podcaster. Despite her real motives, it’s apparent Molly genuinely does want to help, even if that also means her podcast happens to draw in listeners. For now, it seems as though she’s only there for Matt’s case. But what else does she know? Will she ever connect Jim Lindsay, beloved Iron Lake citizen, to Matt’s disappearance? Whatever happens with Molly, we’re excited to see more of her.

Other Noteworthy Moments

  • Logan mentions wrestling to Harrison, who says he’ll consider it. The following day, Harrison makes the team! Zach and co. better watch their backs …
  • When Angela goes to question someone on the reservation, Iris comes up again. This time, we get a slightly clearer idea of what happened with her. She seems to be a girl who went missing, with Iron Lake PD doing nothing to help. We still don’t know exactly who she was to Angela.
  • Lily and Mr. Creeper Man are back. This time, he lets Lily leave … only to shoot her dead (a shot Jim hears) before she barely gets away from the house. (All while keeping his face almost entirely hidden.) He later embalms her. Who is this person, and is he responsible for the missing girls Angela’s been searching for? How long until Jim sniffs him out and goes full-blown Dexter again?
  • In the same scene, showrunner Clyde Phillips’ books (yep, he’s an author, too!) can be seen in a stack on mystery creep’s desk.

Dexter: New Blood airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on Showtime. Keep up with our weekly recaps here and our other ongoing coverage here.

‘Arcane’: Netflix and Riot Games’ Huge Hit Gets a Second Season

0

Season 2 of Arcane is already in production, Riot Games confirmed today. Surprising absolutely no one, Netflix ordered a second season of the hit show based on Riot’s online game League of Legends.

The series only debuted this month, but received rave reviews from both fans of the game and general audiences alike. Rotten Tomatoes doesn’t have a bad word to say about the gorgeously animated show; it awarded Arcane a 100% Average Tomatometer rating and a 98% Average Audience score. And it’s not just them! With a 9.4 rating on IMDB, Arcane is the highest rated original series Netflix has produced.

The glowing praise isn’t much of a surprise to many League of Legends players. They are already familiar with Riot Games’ high production values and quality animatics from marketing and tie-in content. But it surprised a lot of other people when Arcane became the most-watched series on Netflix in 38 countries, only one day after its release!

Now, the world of Runeterra is being enjoyed by folks who’ve never battled their way up a lane. (And by plenty who never intend to).

Netflix, Riot Games, and French animation studio Fortiche have hit upon a winning combination. By utilizing the epic, deep worldbuilding of League of Legends and combining it with a character-focused story, a brilliant score, and stunning animation that combines both CG and hand-drawn art styles, they produced a show that keeps viewers glued to their seats from the first minute to the last.

Christian Link is executive producing the second season. Marc Merrill and Brandon Beck, the original founders of Riot Games and League of Legends, will also produce along with Jane Chung and Thomas Vu.

Hailee Steinfeld (Hawkeye, Dickinson), Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets, Star Trek: Prodigy), and Katie Leung (Harry Potter) will return as the voices of Vi, Jinx, and Caitlyn, respectively.

“We’re beyond happy about the positive response to Arcane‘s first season and are working hard with the creative wizards at Riot and Fortiche to deliver our second installment,” said co-creators Christian Linke and Alex Yee.

After the dramatic cliffhanger season 1 ended on, fans are certainly clamoring for more. Season 2 hasn’t had a release date announced yet, though, so for now we will have to wait…and rewatch.

Stan Lee Wax Figure on Its Way to Madame Tussauds

0

Madame Tussauds, the New York museum that houses the most significant celebrity wax figures on five floors, has a new resident. Legendary comic icon Stan Lee, striking a web-slinging pose and wearing his signature cardigan, khakis, sneakers, and aviator glasses, has arrived. Gill Champion, CEO, and President of POW Entertainment, shared his thought on the addition,

“The legacy of Stan Lee continues to live on through his incredible body of work as well as in all of our hearts. It’s a great joy to see Stan Lee’s wax figure at Madame Tussauds and to give his loyal fans a new way to engage with our dear friend. I know Stan would get a kick out of seeing himself immortalized in wax standing shoulder to shoulder with many of the heroes he loved so much.”

Fans will now be able to find the wax figure as of November 25 in the newly redone Hall of Heroes next to Spiderman. In the new addition, Tiago Mogadouro, Head of Marketing, said,

“We’re so excited to be introducing Stan Lee’s wax figure into Madame Tussauds New York Hall of Heroes. This is the perfect location to honor such an entertainment legend and give fans the ultimate way to keep his memory alive.”

Before reaching the museum starting on November 16, the Stan Lee wax figure visited three iconic locations: the famed 177A Bleecker Street, Dr. Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum, Bethesda Terrace where the Avengers bid farewell to Thor and Loki on their way back to Asgard, and last but certainly not least in Stan Lee’s hometown in the Bronx on Stan Lee Way.
