Interview: Nathan Foad at GalaxyCon Raleigh

Nathan Foad thinks the Our Flag Means Death fandom is annoying.

He even said so at a recent fan panel at GalaxyCon Raleigh.

However, he also means it with all the love in his heart.

“I stand by that, but I mean it more affectionately than you can ever imagine,” he said. “The relationship with the fans is a beautiful thing. It’s never something I thought I would experience. Like, the fact that I recognize people and remember people’s names because [they’re] so loyal. What a special experience.”

Foad’s fluency in sarcasm comes from a background in comedy, growing up on a steady diet of both British and American television.

“In the UK growing up, I was obsessed with a comedian that everyone in the UK knows called Victoria Wood, who has now since passed. She was a very prominent female comedian on TV in the ’90s and noughties on a show called Dinnerladies that I was absolutely obsessed with. And I was also really obsessed with a comedy duo called Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson,” he said. “In the US, god, it runs the gamut. Like I’m obsessed with American comedy, so everyone that was coming out of SNL in the 90s and noughties. I used to bootleg, like, Mad TV when I was, like, 12. I was obsessed.”

He said it still blows his mind that he got to work with SNL’s Leslie Jones on OFMD and that they’ve become friends.

“She texts me and it comes up ‘Leslie Jones.’ And I’m like, LOL, that is crazy. I love her.”

Foad recently broadened his horizons, stretching his skills on stage in Love’s Labour’s Lost co-starring Bridgerton’s Luke Thompson at the Royal Shakespeare Company.

While he was super nervous at first, he came to love the process and was thrilled to have taken on the challenge and expanded his talents by the time the show wrapped.

“I had the time of my life. I liked it so much more than I thought I would. I was really trepidatious about doing it. I nearly said no, not because I thought I was too good for it or anything, I was just so intimidated by it,” he said. “I did a lot of stage work when I was younger, but I’d never worked as a stage actor, like, professionally. When my agent asked me if I wanted to audition for it. I was like, ‘Nooo, I’ll make a fool of myself!’ And it ended up being one of the most joyful experiences of my career. I absolutely loved it. I could have done it forever.”

Though the show has now closed, Foad has stayed busy with other projects, running the gamut from writing to acting to voice work.

“I have a million upcoming projects. A lot of them haven’t been announced, so I can’t really talk about them,” he said. “But I’m writing on a couple of different British shows. I’ve got a big video game coming out next year that I’m quite prominent in. I’ve done audiobooks. I’ve got a lot going on. And I’m sure I’ll be able to talk about them at these conventions soon.”

Foad has been taking part in the convention circuit for a few years now to promote OFMD.  During that time, he has seen his fair share of show-related cosplays and definitely has his favorites.

“I like it when people come as Spanish Jackie’s nose jar. That’s incredible. I also appreciate any Spanish Jackie because I think she has the best outfits in the show,” he said. “And I love seeing Black Pete, actually. Because it’s very rare that you see Black Pete. He’s obviously my favorite character in the show, because I’m in love with Matthew Maher. So I always appreciate that.”

The legacy of OFMD will continue on as long as fans cosplay as their favorite characters, and even beyond that. Foad witnessed the power of the fandom firsthand when many came from all over the world to see him in Love’s Labour’s Lost. But what he hopes the show is most remembered for is the relationships formed between fans and the families found therein.
“I’ve said this before, but the thing that I find the most touching is that people follow our other work, which I find amazing, “ he said. “And I hope [Our Flag] is always remembered as a show that brought people together. Remembered as a show that celebrates differences and celebrates freaks. I think that’s really important.”

Dragon Con Panel Highlights 2024

Dragon Con once again proved why it’s one of the most beloved fan conventions in the country – heck, even the world! – as it brings together stars, creators, and fans for fun, unforgettable panels every year. From nostalgic reunions to hilarious storytelling to a few surprise reveals, this year’s programming was packed with moments that turn into core memories. Here are some of the highlights from 2024:

(But please note that while Dragon Con typically hosts a panel a day for its premier guests/shows, I am but one person and can only be in one place at a time. If you don’t see your favorite moment from the con, be sure to shout it out in the comments!)

Roswell 25th Anniversary Panel

I don’t like to be reminded that this year was the 25th anniversary of the Roswell premiere. It makes me feel way too old. Regardless, this year’s Roswell celebration was a perfect mix of nostalgia, fresh news, and fun behind-the-scenes stories.

To start, Brendan Fehr and Majandra Delfino delighted the audience with an update on their project, Baron and Toluca, confirming they have a production company in place and are simply waiting for the right studio to say yes.

Next, the cast also shared stories about their original audition experiences. Jason Behr, who was cast early on, got to read opposite multiple potential Liz and Isobel actresses and noted that Shiri Appleby was one of the last cast on the show. Fehr auditioned for Max but always wanted the role of Michael, eventually auditioning after producer/director David Nutter asked him to read for the part. He landed the role, and the rest is history!

Delfino auditioned for Liz, but played her more comedic, while Nick Wechsler auditioned for Alex before being called back for Kyle. Wechsler recalled that Appleby told him he was the only audition that made her laugh.

Behind the scenes, Behr’s single personal request for the series was the use of a Radiohead song, while Fehr got to decorate Michael’s apartment with posters of his choosing. Wechsler admitted he initially thought of Kyle as a villain until the writers took the character in a goofier direction. And in one particularly wild memory, Wechsler revealed that when he had to play drunk, he drank most of a bottle of vodka, despite never having been drunk before.

On the horizon, Fehr and Delfino teased their upcoming horror movie The Killer Café, while Nick is set to appear in The Hunting Party on NBC.

Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk

Screenshot

Few duos can command a stage like Firefly co-stars Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion. The two revealed that they actually met long before their Firefly days, when Tudyk was working at Harry’s Burritos in New York and Fillion stopped in. It wasn’t until years later, on the Firefly set, that they realized the connection, with Fillion musing, “Did we waste a lot of years not being friends?”

Fillion has a long history of pranking Tudyk – like leaving out shocker lighters when Tudyk would house-sit – only for Alan to eventually turn the tables and leave a shocker pen for Fillion.

In true Dragon Con tradition, they brought a “bag of crap” to share with fans, including The Rookie script sides, wallpaper scraps, a stretchy banana, and a bathroom magazine from 2010.

Later, Tudyk surprised Fillion (and the audience) by revealing he’ll be voicing a role in James Gunn’s Creature Commandos. Fillion, meanwhile, still dreams of joining the Star Wars universe and told the story of Tudyk taking a call about K-2SO while at Fillion’s house:

Fillion: “What was that call for?”

Tudyk: “Oh, just Star Wars.”

The two also received a fan question about swapping roles, with Tudyk saying he’d take Fillion’s part in Superman and Fillion saying he would have loved playing Tudyk’s role in Tucker and Dale vs. Evil.

They also shared thoughts on cosplay (Fillion would go for armor or Gryffindor robes; Tudyk would opt for The Incredibles) and fondly remembered group scenes from Firefly, with Fillion admitting he thought the show would last forever because “we had movie star Alan Tudyk.”

What We Do in the Shadows

The What We Do in the Shadows panel was so in-demand that the line stretched beyond the designated line-up area – especially since there was only one panel this year, compared to the usual daily appearances, so many fans didn’t make it into the room.

Things went hilariously off the rails almost immediately, with Kayvan Novak calling every audience member at the mic a “virgin.” One fan’s reply – “Well, you’re not wrong” – sent Novak running behind the curtain while Harvey Guillén collapsed in laughter under the table.

While the cast couldn’t reveal much about the upcoming final season, they reflected on the joy of working together and the bittersweet feelings of closing this chapter of their lives.

Final Thoughts

Dragon Con continues to strike a balance between silly fun and genuine connections between fans and actors, proving why it’s unlike any other con I’ve been to. One element I especially appreciated was the continuation of incorporating fan questions from Discord, a practice started during last year’s strike. This approach not only encourages more creative questions but also gives fans who may be too shy to approach the mic a chance to connect with their favorite stars. It’s yet another way the convention makes every attendee, whether in the front row or following online, feel like part of the experience.

I’m already counting down the days until next year’s con!

Interview: Vico Ortiz at GalaxyCon Raleigh

Though Our Flag Means Death may be over, the show’s legacy will continue to live on through its fans.

Or so Vico Ortiz, who plays Jim Jimenez on the Max comedy, believes.

They are touched by the family the fandom has created and how everyone looks out for each other, building each other up through online support.

“The legacy is all y’all,” they recently said at GalaxyCon Raleigh. “I feel genuinely that what everyone is building – not just with the show, but with each other – is community. How you all are fundraising for each other’s everything. Whatever you might need, whether it’s anything health-related or celebrating your own process. Whether it’s HRT or surgeries, or whatever it may be. It truly is outstanding, what you’re doing, because for me, that’s what community building is. That’s what organizing is. And what makes society better is when we are able to lean on each other and be interdependent and know that we have each other to grow. So truly the legacy is all y’all.”

No doubt fans take inspiration from Ortiz themself, who lives their life authentically and encourages others to do the same. But that authenticity doesn’t come without responsibility, something Ortiz doesn’t take lightly.

“It’s a huge responsibility and it’s something that I feel very honored to be part of,” they said. “I feel we all carry such responsibility. And oftentimes all I have to do is just what you said: I be me, and that inspires other people to be themselves. And that’s how we all collectively hold responsibility for who we are as human beings and how we care for each other and our growth as a society.”

On OFMD, Jim is nonbinary, just like Ortiz. And also like Ortiz, they are part of a polycule.

While it was established but not explicitly identified in season two, Ortiz wishes the show would have gotten a season three to explore the relationships between Jim, Olu, Archie, and Zheng more.

“I think something that I really loved about Jim in the second season was the integration of their relationships that they’re involved in,” they said. “So you see a little bit more softness and vulnerability in Jim because they learned that from Olu. And then you also start seeing them apply a little bit more silliness because they’re learning that from Archie. And I think for a third season, it would have been really interesting to see how Jim starts integrating things that they learned from Zheng. Zheng seems a little bit more similar to how Jim was in the first season. So seeing certain aspects of themselves that are very intense and mysterious and more walled up, it’s like, ‘Oh, how do I see that and learn from that and continue to integrate all the elements that I’m learning from all the partners?’ So I think that would have been really cool.”

However, that’s not to say Ortiz wouldn’t want some humor infused into their relationships.

This is the David Jenkins School of Historical Accuracy, after all.

Photo: Lauren Santana

“Also just more silly fighting shenanigans,” they said when further describing how they would want the polycule portrayed. “It would have been so fun to have a scene with Zheng, Archie, and Jim sparring and Olu eating, like, popcorn. I don’t know if popcorn existed in the 1700s, but who cares? He’s wearing Crocs!”

Ortiz is proud of the growth Jim experiences throughout the show, going from someone who was raised to stay in the shadows in season one, to being more open with the Revenge crew and coming into themself more in season two.

“It’s so beautiful because Jim opens up more [in season two.] I think mostly Jim just realizes they can take space,” they said. “For a very long time Jim’s MO was like, ‘I want to live in the shadows. I don’t want anyone to notice me. I don’t want to be perceived.’ The less perceived, the better, because that’s the way that they can kill people and, like, never show up again. But as an actor, I am very loud. I take up a lot of space as Vico Ortiz. I have no problem being like, ‘What’s up? Let’s do this. I’m game!’ And I gave a little bit of that confidence into Jim in the second season. Because they’re very confident anyway, but having that type of confidence in the second season felt very beautiful, because I could see really just Jim growing into themself and feeling more and more comfortable.”

One way Ortiz has grown into themself as a person is through drag, something they think extends beyond the stage and into everyday life.

“Something that I love about drag is that it’s genuinely actually helped me a lot in my personal life, when I started to realize just how much I was performing in my day-to-day,” they said. “[Through drag], I was like, ‘Oh, wow, Why am I having so much more comfort in exploring femininity and masculinity in my drag persona, but when I’m in my day-to-day, I’m having trouble integrating all of that within myself?’ So once I got more comfortable performing that – literally performing it – I was like, ‘Oh, then I can just play! I can also just do that in my day-to-day!’ I felt a lot more free. I genuinely think that drag is just something that you can do. It’s an everyday thing. Everything that you do when you wake up and you put on clothes and makeup, all that, that’s all drag, right? So have fun with that, too!”

While Ortiz shares clips of their drag performances online, they are also known to join Samba Schutte (Roach) in posting fun behind-the-scenes clips on social media, always keeping the OFMD fandom on their toes with fun photos and videos of the cast. But they had to be careful when filming season two as they knew eagle-eyed fans would analyze everything they posted.

“It’s always fun to tease. It’s always fun to excite the fandom,” they said. “I mean, everyone’s a detective. I’m really impressed. Every time I would take a photo of something for [behind the scenes] in New Zealand, I had to make sure that there were no reflections or anything like that anywhere. I was absolutely very aware of how smart all y’all are. I love it.”

They also have a soft spot for fan art, with their dad even getting in on the love from the fans.

“Honestly one of my favorite things to watch is the speed in which people create fan art from [behind the scenes] content,” they said. “Truly even just like a selfie with us out and about, like, grabbing dinner. People do fan art of us as our characters, like, hanging out. I’m just like, that is so incredible. Truly, the talent in this fandom, it just surpasses everything. I taught my dad how to send me photos on Instagram because he was taking screenshots and sending them to me as a text. And I was like, ‘No, no, send me as a DM! You can send it to me [there]!’ And now all my DMs with my dad are just fan art. It’s great.”

Ortiz’s phone storage of fan art likely mimics that of many fans, and will only grow more as the show’s word of mouth continues to swell, despite its cancellation. It’s clear the legacy of the show is love, and Ortiz obviously loves the fans just as much in return as they love them.

Interview: Kristian Nairn at GalaxyCon Raleigh

Kristian Nairn never expected any of…this.

“My career started in music. Acting kind of just happened, which I’ve been eternally grateful for,” the Game of Thrones and Our Flag Means Death star recently said at GalaxyCon Raleigh. “I just feel very lucky to be part of these huge franchises. Like, I never imagined how big Game of Thrones was going to get. I never expected Our Flag to have such a huge fan base. I’ve been very lucky.”

Nairn still scratches the music itch with DJ sets at cons and on tour, but his most recent artistic endeavor is writing a book about his life, including stories of doing drag and his experience growing up gay in Ireland, plus his experiences on the sets of two huge TV franchises. But Nairn wasn’t the one who came up with the idea to write it.

“It was an idea by my manager. We spend a lot of time together and I would always be telling him stories about my past. And he would always make quips like, ‘You gotta write this down. You gotta put it in a book,’” he said. “And then I started to put it together and then I started to enjoy the process. It’s been a hugely cathartic process. I’m very proud of it. I’m excited to see what the world thinks.”

During the cast panel at the con, Nairn’s OFMD costar Nathan Foad (Lucius) came out on stage holding an advance copy of the book and even placed it on the couch so the audience could see it the whole time.

“He wants a commission but he’s not getting it!” Nairn joked about Foad’s enthusiasm. “One percent maybe. Actually, I can’t say that. He’d probably take it!”

Through the book, titled Beyond the Throne, Nairn hopes fans will get to know him on a personal level.

“People will know me better when they read it. They’ll know more about what makes me tick. I mean, I’m always who I am. I’ve never changed myself ever. But there’s stuff about me I wouldn’t mind the world finding out. I don’t have anything to hide,” he said.

Another way he has connected with fans is through Wee John Wednesdays, a Q&A he started hosting on Instagram Live during the UK airing of Our Flag season one. He continued to bring on the cast and crew to discuss season two post-SAG and WGA strike, plus he’ll pop on for random one-offs here and there. While he doesn’t remember exactly how WJW got started, he for sure knows why.

Photo: Lauren Santana

“How did it come about? I have no memory at all,” he said. “But I wanted to do them because I was missing these guys [his fellow castmates], and we weren’t getting any information from HBO at the time, and people wanted something to grasp onto. And I said, ‘Well, if you’re not going to do it, I’m going to freakin’ do it!’”

In one memorable WJW, he brought on costume designer Gypsy Taylor, who was in charge of creating the iconic Calypso look for Nairn in season two. Through the process, he and Taylor closely collaborated on the vision to bring Calypso to life, with Nairn drawing inspiration from his former drag life, even mentioning during the fan panel that he sent OFMD creator David Jenkins photos of himself in drag to entice him to let him dress up sometime during the course of the show.

It’s clear Nairn couldn’t be more proud of how Calypso turned out and couldn’t heap enough praise on Taylor’s execution of the look.

“We had so many makeup tests and everything. I always had a lot to say because obviously I do my own makeup. I didn’t do that makeup. But I did have a lot to say!” he said. “My drag would be more goth. But I loved that look. I just remember Gypsy was just as excited about it as I was. Because we were running out of time towards the end of season two, there was a real, real chance that it was going to be cut. Because of the costs, because of everything. And both me and Gypsy were like, ‘No, we have to do this.’ And Gypsy had made that incredible dress. Yeah, we had to do it. It was very collaborative. And Gypsy is incredible. So talented. Just one of the coolest people I’ve ever met. Soul sister. I really connected with Gypsy.”

Nairn is also proud of the representation offered by OFMD and is honored to be part of a show that uplifts queer joy and acceptance.

“It’s everything,” he said. “You know what, I’m not into celebrating queerness. We’re just celebrating humanity. I think this show showed people that we were just human. And that’s so important. It’s so fucking important for me that we were represented that way. I’m just honored to be a part of it.”
