Jack’s 5 Biggest Moments in Season 13 of ‘Supernatural’

Spoiler alert! This article contains multiple spoilers not only about the character of Jack Kline, but the entirety of Season 13. Read on at your own risk!

Season 12 ended with a bang as Jack Kline, nephilim son of Lucifer, was born. Fans were shocked to see a young adult huddled in the corner, eyes glowing yellow as the season ends. We were left to wonder whether he would be just as evil as his father.

As season 13 kicked off fans are greeted by a defensive Jack attacking Sam and Dean, then disappearing. We spent exactly half an episode wondering if he would be evil. Many, if not all, fans were won over the moment Jack smiled and joyfully exclaimed, “I like nougat” to a wary sheriff.

Jack’s character faces many trying situations throughout the season resulting in impressive character development. Actor Alexander Calvert expertly navigates the waters of the Supernatural world as he perfectly portrays Jack’s naiveté and innocence while also highlighting his fierce determination to help and protect others.

Let’s take a look at Jack’s five biggest moments in Season 13.

1. “The Rising Son” – Episode 2

Following an intense battle with angels determined to capture Jack, the Winchesters discover that angel blades cannot kill him. Dean and Sam are both visibly confused and alarmed as Jack extracts the angel blade from his chest clearly unharmed.

Back at the bunker Dean hears an odd noise and discovers Jack in his room repeatedly stabbing himself with a knife, his wounds healing instantaneously. Dean charges into the room grabbing the knife away from Jack.

DEAN: Okay. What the hell? Give me that. You—Don’t be an idiot. Look, A, this is not gonna do anything to you, okay? And B, you… What the hell?

JACK: Exactly. What the hell am I? I can’t control… whatever this is. I will hurt someone.

DEAN: You know, my brother thinks you can be saved.

JACK: You don’t believe that.

DEAN: No, I don’t.

JACK: So… if you’re right?

DEAN: If I’m right… and it comes to killing you… I’ll be the one to do it.

Why is this significant?

We see Jack begin to grabble with the reality of his existence and what being a nephilim means. Thus far he’s had limited exposure to other beings, and sees only fear in Sam and Dean’s eyes when they look at him. This is the first time Jack openly admits his inability to control his power and confesses to Dean he worries about hurting someone. Dean promises to kill Jack if necessary, which only serves to make Jack even more wary.

We see the result of this conversation later as Jack begins to mimic the brothers, fearing his powers and believing he must be evil. Will he inevitably go bad as Dean says? Is he capable of learning control and being good? Not even Jack is sure of the answer and he is now fully aware of how dangerous he is.

2. “Patience” – Episode 3

Back from a solo hunt, Dean arrives at the bunker and casually asks Sam if Jack has gone evil yet. Frustrated, Sam argues that Jack is not and will not go bad if they teach him to control his powers. He argues that Jack is not evil just because Lucifer is his father. Just as Dean saved Sam from drinking demon blood, he asks Dean to help save Jack.

However, Dean is not interested in Sam’s attempts to redeem Jack. In the heat of the argument Dean admits to seeing only loss and death when he looks at him.

DEAN: Look, I know you think that you can use him as some sort of an inter dimensional can-opener and that’s fine, but don’t act like you care about him! Because you only care about what he can do for you! So if you want to pretend, that’s fine! But me? I can hardly look at the kid! Because when I do all I see is everybody we’ve lost!

SAM: Mom chose to take that shot at Lucifer. That is not on Jack!

DEAN: And what about Cas?

SAM: What about Cas?

DEAN: He manipulated him, he made him promises, said, ‘paradise on earth’ and Cas bought it and you know what that got him? It got him dead! Now you might be able to forget about that, but I can’t!

Unbeknownst to the brothers Jack is listening to their fight from the hallway. We know that Jack longs for acceptance and wants to please both Sam and Dean. It is at this moment he realizes Dean holds him responsible for Mary and Castiel’s death. Distressed by the argument Jack accidentally uses his powers to awaken Castiel in The Empty.

Why is this significant?

The limits of Jack’s powers are unknown at this point. Jack has already established that he cannot control his powers, and yet he is able to reach through the abyss and awaken Cas with pure desperation and longing for his chosen father figure. We see both how powerful Jack is and how badly he wants to help others.

In waking Castiel, who is then able to annoy his way out of The Empty, Jack has also played a hand in waking up Dean. Thus far Dean has barely been able to look beyond his own grief over Mary and Cas. However, Jack is directly responsible for the “win” that Dean so desperately desired. Thanks to Jack, Team Free Will 2.0 is formed and they are ready to fight their way to the apocalypse world and save Mary.

3. “Good Intentions” – Episode 14

Following their escape from Michael in the apocalypse world, Jack and Mary set out to locate Bobby and the rebel army. However, upon their arrival Mary admits to Bobby that Jack is a nephilim after Jack uses his powers to put on a shadow puppet show for the children. Bobby’s hatred for angels runs deep and he angrily demands that Jack leave their camp by daybreak.

Just before Mary and Jack depart angels attack the rebel army camp. Bobby immediately blames Jack for the incursion who insists he did not betray their location on purpose.

Mary tells Jack to hide, but he choses to stand and fight. In a demonstration of strength and loyalty, Jack kills Zachariah and his army of angels attacking the camp. Shocked by this show of force Bobby apologizes for judging Jack, but Jack has also come to a realization of his own.

BOBBY: Well, I don’t know what to say except thank you.

MARY: Jack, what you did was amazing.

JACK: I had to come back. Sam and Dean, they wouldn’t run. They’d stay and fight. These angels, what they’re doing, they’re not gonna stop. As long as Michael’s out there, this war will never be over.

BOBBY: So what are you saying?

JACK: I have to kill him.

Why is this significant?

Though he is not evil, Jack is once again exposed to the prejudice of humans against what he is when Bobby rejects him for being a nephilim. We see Jack constantly grappling with the fear of those around him as well as his own. However, the attack on the refugee camp allows Jack to show his true nature and his desire to protect others. From watching Sam and Dean he learns that the good guy will always fight for those in trouble.

Jack finally feels as if he is helping, rather than hurting, others by using his powers to defeat the angels. This major turning point drives his decision to stay with the rebel camp and strengthens his resolve to kill Michael.

4. “Unfinished Business” – Episode 20

Convinced that Michael’s decision to move his base camp farther away is a sign of their success, Jack decides to investigate the abandoned angel camp. Mary and several others accompany Jack on the recon mission wherein they discover the forgotten war map with Michael’s plans.

Mary is suspicious at once, suggesting that the plans are a trap. Jack, however, is adamant about attacking Michael immediately. Other members of Jack’s team find Kevin Tran whom they assume was a prisoner. As plans are discussed and preparations to leave the church made, Kevin reveals himself to be the trap Mary had predicted.

Jack and Mary try to talk Kevin out of it using the spell carved into his chest to kill them.

KEVIN: Michael says when I get to heaven, when he lets me into heaven, I’ll get to see my mom again.

MARY: I’ve been to heaven and what’s there, it’s just memories. Nothing’s real.

KEVIN: I don’t care! You don’t understand, I- you don’t know the things I’ve done. I just want this to be over.

JACK: Your spell won’t kill me.

KEVIN: Michael doesn’t want to kill you. He wants to break you. He said for me to tell you that even if you win, you still lose. I’m sorry.

Kevin then touches the sigil on his chest, activating the spell. The blast kills all but Jack and Mary whom Jack wraps in his wings to protect her.

Why is this significant?

This is the first time Jack is placed in a leadership role. It’s his decision to take a recon team and inspect the abandoned camp. It is also his first experience of losing soldiers in this war, a direct result of his decisions. He feels responsible for the deaths of his team and we see a distraught Jack surrounded by his companions as Mary lay unconscious. It is a blow to Jack’s confidence in his choices and he begins to question himself again.

The lighter side of this scene is Jack’s immediate reaction to protect Mary. As soon as Kevin raises his hand Jack grabs Mary and wraps his wings around her thus saving her life. We again see his instinctual desire to save people, a trait Sam, Dean and Cas would surely be proud of.

5. “Let the Good Times Roll” – Episode 23

After meeting Lucifer, Jack decides to give him a chance to explain his actions rather than blindly accept the opinions of others. He attempts to bond with his father while also giving Lucifer an opportunity to prove he is not evil. Lucifer tries to win Jack over through a series of half hearted good acts. Upon Jack’s request Lucifer even resurrects Maggie, an apocalypse world refugee for whom Jack felt responsible.

Away from Sam, Dean, and Castiel, Lucifer tries to convince Jack to leave Earth. He convinces him with the idea of exploring the universe together as father and son, exploiting Jack’s desire for family.

Jack agrees, but before they can depart Jack hears Sam’s distressed prayers and they return to the bunker to help. They find Sam and Dean at the mercy of Michael, and Jack quickly overpowers the archangel. Michael reveals his deal with Lucifer, and Lucifer steps in to stop Jack killing Michael.

Jack discovers that Lucifer has been manipulating him and intended to let Michael destroy Earth. Sam also reveals that Lucifer murdered Maggie. Lucifer deflects the charges but Jack uses his powers to force Lucifer to tell the truth.

JACK: Tell me the truth!

LUCIFER: She saw me when I was scouting out the bunker. She saw me and she screamed… so I crushed her skull with my bare hands. And it was warm and wet, and I liked it.

JACK: You’re not my father. You’re a monster.

When Jack rejects him, Lucifer admits he only wants Jack’s power. He slits Jack’s throat, steals his grace and disappears with Jack and Sam, who attempts to stop Lucifer at the last second.

Why is this significant?

Jack has struggled with his desire for family throughout this season. We see him mourn the death of his mother early on. He is again devastated when he discovers Castiel, the angel he chose as his father, is also dead. We see him bond with Sam, Dean, Castiel and Mary, but he is presented with a true blood relative when Lucifer finds him.

He wants to trust his father despite everything the others have told him. However, when Lucifer reveals his true nature Jack rejects him outright without a second thought. He chooses Castiel and the Winchesters when he realizes for himself that family doesn’t end in blood.

With Lucifer presumably dead, Jack will turn his attentions to saving Dean and destroying Michael once and for all. Will he succeed? We will have to tune in for season 14 to find out.

Season 14 premieres Wednesday, October 11 on the CW. Nerds and Beyond has even more 5 Biggest Moments posts coming soon to help you through the hiatus!

Sharp Objects Recap: Episode 1 “Vanish”

0

The highly anticipated show Sharp Objects premiered on July 8 on HBO. Adapted from the bestselling novel written by Gillian Flynn (who also wrote Gone Girl), this eight-episode drama is executive produced by Flynn and directed by Big Little Lies‘ Jean-Marc Vallee.

Each week, I will recap the latest episode of the series. And I feel it is necessary to point out that I have not yet read Flynn’s book. If Sharp Objects is anything like Gone Girl, then I know I am in for a big plot twist at some point, and I can’t wait to find out what it is!

Obvious but obligatory warning: this recap will be chock full of spoilers, so beware!

The series premiere opens up with shots of a sleepy town, and we soon learn that the town is Wind Gap. This seems to be taking place in the late 1980s, because of an “Elect Bush” sign in a shop window, as well as the older model cars that line the streets. Two girls enter the scene, and they’re skating down an old road. These girls are sisters, the younger one asking the older one if she thinks their mother will notice that they are missing from home.

The girls skate to a large two-story house, remove their skates, and run to the front door. They sneak inside, not wanting to be seen by the two adults in the house (presumably their parents) and slowly make their way upstairs. The older sister, who is about 15, quietly opens a bedroom door. We see a 2008 Obama “Hope” poster on the wall (so much for this taking place in the 80s) and, in the next room, a woman (played by series star Amy Adams) is sleeping in bed. The sisters quietly walk up to the sleeping woman, and the older sister grabs a paper clip, bends back the wire to expose the sharp end, and stabs the woman in the hand.

The woman, Camille Preaker, wakes up – it was all a dream. She is one of the two sisters, now grown up.

Camille gets out of bed and drives to her job as a reporter with the St. Louis Chronicle. Her boss, Frank, wants to give her an assignment covering a story in Wind Gap, Camille’s home town. Frank is surprised that she is not aware of what the story could be and asks her if she ever talks to her family who still live there. “Not if I can help it,” she responds. Frank informs her that a young girl was murdered in the town last year, and now another girl has gone missing. And he tells her that this may be an opportunity for her to “flush some things out” and to get back on her feet… that the story “could be very big, if you do it right.” Camille very hesitantly accepts the assignment.

Camille prepares for her trip by packing her things, which mostly consists of candy bars and small bottles of vodka. As she gathers her computer for her trip, we can see the word “DRUNK” carved into her desk. And shortly after, when she places her things in the trunk of her car, we see “DIRTY” written on the top of the trunk.

Camille leaves St. Louis and makes her way to Wind Gap (drinking vodka from a water bottle the entire trip), and she eventually pulls into the local Holiday Motel. She unpacks her things (and by “unpacks,” I mean she empties a paper bag filled with liquor bottles and packs of cigarettes onto the bed) and draws a bath. Disconnected and confusing (to us) flashbacks from her past cut in quickly and unexpectedly, and she tries to wash down each one with more alcohol.

The next day, Camille makes her way into town to join the search party efforts and meet the locals to get some information for her research. She doesn’t turn up much, except for running into some family friends. At the end of the day, Camille leaves and drives past the Holiday Motel where she has been staying. She ends up at a gated driveway and punches in the correct code to open the gate. The house at the end of the driveway is the same house we saw at the beginning of the episode in her dream.

She walks up to the porch and sits in a chair, and another memory returns. This time, she is 15 again, and her sister is lying next to her. Their conversation is about death and ghosts. Camille must have been talking aloud in step with her memory, because Camille’s mother, Adora (superbly played by Patricia Clarkson), realizes that Camille is on the porch and meets her at the door. Camille explains that she is in town on business, and Adora responds, “My house is not up to par for visitors, I’m afraid.” But she eventually lets her in and announces to her husband, “Alan, Camille’s here.” And Alan replies, “Who?”

There is no sign of her sixteen-year-old half-sister, Amma, who has only been mentioned twice in the episode so far.

Adora leads Camille upstairs to her old bedroom, because Camille has asked to stay at the house for a few days. However, while lying in her old bed, another memory explodes onto screen: the two sisters are lying in the same bed, and Camille’s younger sister experiences a medical scare – perhaps a seizure or a severe asthma attack. Camille cannot handle the stress of being back in her old home, so she promptly leaves to go to the local bar to forget.

At the bar, she sees the brother of the girl who is currently missing and walks up to talk to him for her story. But she stops when she sees Detective Willis, who is working the case, walk up to her. By the time their conversation is finished, the missing girl’s brother has left. So Camille goes to her car to leave. She turns on her music from her nearly broken-in-two phone (lots of Led Zeppelin in this episode, which I love), and the next scene shows her waking up in her car in the early morning hours. She presumably drank herself to sleep.

She eventually returns to her parents’ home, and her mother calls her in to the kitchen. “I’m happy you’re here,” Adora says to her daughter, “…but please, don’t embarrass me again. When you’re here, everything you do comes back on me. Understand?” And when she learns that Camille slept in her car, her only concern is if anyone saw her.

Every story needs a villain, I guess.

Camille stocks up at the local liquor store (at 9:30 in the morning) and heads over to see the family of Ann, the girl who was murdered last year. The father recounts the events of the day Ann went missing, and he becomes immediately angry when she asks him where he was that day, asking her why she is taking notes on his whereabouts. He eventually calms down, but Camille is not able to determine if the girl’s mother is still in the picture. The father says she is at work, but Camille doesn’t believe him.

In town, Camille sees some teenagers playing with donated stuffed animals left at a makeshift memorial for the missing girl, Natalie. And the girl’s brother is there, too – the same guy Camille saw at the bar. She tells them to stop, but one of the teenage girls tells Camille that there is no point in letting all the flowers die, and that the things of the memorial do not belong only to Natalie’s family.

Camille hears a screaming woman in the alley and runs over to her, only to discover that the missing girl, Natalie, has been murdered and placed in the alley! In the next scene, Camille gives her statement to Detective Willis (“Congrats, Detective. Looks like you got your serial after all.”) and returns to her parents’ house.

After Adora reprimands Camille for not calling her earlier to let her know she was okay (this is the first time Adora has shown any concern for Camille’s whereabouts in this episode), half-sister Amma comes down from upstairs. Camille instantly recognizes the girl from the makeshift memorial – Amma was the ringleader who said there was no point in letting all the flowers die, etc. It’s made clear that Amma knew who Camille was, but Camille did not recognize Amma, because “Adora had stopped sending those Christmas pictures a while back.”

The sisters walk upstairs, and Amma asks Camille if she has seen Marion’s room. (Marion is the name of Camille’s younger sister.) Amma says that Adora keeps the room like a museum. This is enough to pique Camille’s interest. When Amma closes her bedroom door, Camille opens Marion’s. And now her flashbacks are centered around Marion’s funeral, combined with visions of Natalie, who was found earlier in the alley. The flashbacks are very traumatic and show how Camille refused to accept the truth that her sister was gone.

The episode ends with Camille drawing another bath and drinking heavily. As she steps into the bathtub, we can see that nearly every inch of her body is covered in old self-harm scars. It was at this point that I realized that Camille had been wearing the same long-sleeved, long-pants outfit for the entire episode.

I loved watching “Vanish”! I was captivated the entire time, and I spent most of my time trying to piece together Camille’s memories and flashbacks. There were many flashbacks that still do not make any sense to me, which is understandable after only seeing one episode. But I am definitely going to require a rewatch to see what other clues and snippets I can pick up on.

Come back next week for a recap of Sharp Objects second episode, “Dirt,” which will air on Sunday, July 15, at 9 p.m. EST!

“Travelers” Wraps Up Filming for Season 3

0

Travelers wrapped their filming of Season 3 in Vancouver this weekend. Throughout filming this season, the cast really gave their fans a chance to see them and what they do. They did multiple Instagram takeovers with the cast and crew where they showed the fans behind the scenes and answered questions while they were filming in different locations in Vancouver and also on set.

They all have been very tight-lipped about what happens in Season 3, but there have been hints, or possible red herrings about the ending of Season 3. Fans have been speculating if there is going to be a character death or something bigger ever since the cliffhanger that we were left with at the end of Season 2.

Are the Traveler teams still going to exist or are they going to be pulled back into their own time? Are we going to learn more about the mysterious Director who is issuing the orders? Is the Faction still perverting events to try and completely change what is going on and who is in power in the future? Are Marcy and David getting back to their version of normal? What about Kat and Grant – does their relationship survive all the hits it took during Season 2?

No matter what happens in Season 3, one thing is guaranteed: we are going to see some big things coming for our favorite time traveling team.

Nerds and Beyond will be recapping one episode per week to lead us up to the Season 3 premiere in December, so stay tuned for that, and “Welcome to the 21st”.

“Supernatural” Season 14 Begins Filming Today!

Fear not, Supernatural fans, because if you squint, you should be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel of Supernatural’s summer hiatus.

That’s right! Season 14 of Supernatural begins filming today! The crew has already been hard at work for the last few weeks, and many of them shared their excitement with us on social media.

Co-executive producer Jim Michaels let us know on July 5th that Supernatural was working on their first tech survey:

Michaels posted again yesterday with some photos of the bunker:

And he’s back once more with the first photo from today!

Also today, assistant production coordinator, Emma Peterson, just shared that they’ve filmed their first scene!

Production co-coordinator, Jason Fischer, confessed the sate of the Supernatural office:

Rob Hayter, stunt coordinator, shared a photo of everybody’s favorite car:

We’ve also gotten a few hints about which cast members will be back for the first episode, including this photo of the script from Alexander Calvert (Jack):

Calvert had posted another photo first, but underestimated the fandom’s sleuthing skills and had to re-post after we figured out the title of the first episode: “Stranger in a Strange Land.”

Jim Beaver, who plays Bobby Singer, also shared his travel plans with us:

Christian Keyes, who played the AU version of Michael, also dropped a hint that his days on Supernatural aren’t necessarily over with this Tweet:

In past seasons, we’ve gotten first day filming photos from most of the cast, so keep your fingers crossed and eyes peeled on social media for more hints on who’s going to be included in the first episode. We’ll update this post with more information as it comes in, too!

Don’t forget to tune into the Season 14 premiere of Supernatural on Thursday, October 11 on the CW!
