‘Sharp Objects’ Recap: Episode 3 “Fix”

0

Each week, I will recap the latest episode of Sharp Objects, which is currently airing on HBO. (See the previous episode recaps here.) The third episode to air was “Fix”.

We learned last week that there will be no season two of Sharp Objects. HBO programming executive Casey Bloys stated that the primary reason the series will end after one season is because the material is too heavy and dark. Series star Amy Adams said that the material was almost too much to handle while she was filming:

I had really bad insomnia [during filming] and would wake up with anxiety. I had to realize that I didn’t own it, it belonged to Camille. I had to decide what I had to let go of and what I could use the next day.

So that means the remaining five episodes that have yet to air are going to be filled to the brim with very difficult scenes. And “Fix” was the most difficult one yet to stomach, in my opinion. It answered a lot of questions I’d had since the premiere aired, but honestly, I’m not so sure I’m glad to have the answers, because they were tough to swallow.

Here is a gentle-as-possible recap of “Fix.”

Obligatory warning: Spoilers ahead, so beware!

The episode starts out with a group of local teenagers (Amma included) hanging out in a field, drinking beers and raising some general hell. John Keene (who some have claimed is “too emotional” in the wake of his sister’s murder) is also there, and Amma spends most of her time making fun of him, for no particular reason. She goads him from one end of the field, while his girlfriend begs him to sit down and ignore Amma. Eventually, police Chief Vickery arrives to disperse the group of kids.

The next scene shows Amma running the property’s golf cart into her mother’s rose garden, because she is so intoxicated. Camille helps her into the house and gets her upstairs without alerting Adora. (Camille has obviously had much practice with this.) Amma asks Camille why she’s being so nice to her, even though she herself is “not nice,” and Camille says it’s because she wasn’t nice when she was Amma’s age, either.

Eventually, the rain begins to fall, and Camille experiences her first flashback of the episode. This one is different than all the other ones we’ve seen, because it starts out in snippets, like the others, but then it forms into one continuous moment.

We’re about to witness a full and complete memory from Camille’s past.

She is sitting in her car, watching the rain fall, drinking from a bottle. She pulls out a razor and pulls back the sleeve from her sweatshirt. The next scene thankfully skips over what happened in the car and shows a nurse at a desk asking her if she’s checking in. She is in a hospital, and while she is filling out the paperwork, we see a janitor walk by with his cleaning cart: this scene is one of the flashbacks we have seen numerous times in the previous two episodes.

Next, Camille sees a girl, about 17 years old, listening to music (Led Zeppelin, actually) on her phone that is plugged in at the nurses’ station. The nurse tells Alice (the girl) that her listening time is up, and she has to hand over her phone. And a few minutes later, the nurse leads Camille to Alice’s room. They are now roommates in what appears to be a psychiatric hospital.

Is the girl’s phone the same one that Camille has been using to listen to Led Zeppelin throughout the series?

Camille wakes up the next morning/afternoon and heads to the store to stock up on liquor. Meanwhile, Detective Willis is still investigating the girls’ murders. He has become frustrated with Chief Vickery who refuses to listen to Willis’ thoughts about the cases. Vickery seems set on believing that both girls were murdered by some random trucker or grifter. Willis, however, is convinced that the murderer is someone the girls knew.

Camille is seen at the Keenes’ house (Natalie’s family), and Natalie’s mother has just slammed the door in Camille’s face. At the same time, John’s girlfriend Ashley (the “Jackie O” from Camille’s funeral notes) arrives and sees what happens. She asks Camille if she is there to speak to John. She says yes, and Ashley tells her that he lives with her now, and she is welcome to stop by later to talk to him all she wants.

There is another memory from the psychiatric hospital: Camille helps Alice with applying her makeup. Camille tells her that she is lucky that she can still wear skirts, revealing that Alice, too, self harms. The scene flips back and forth between the memory and Camille driving her car in present time, with a smile on her face, as she reminisces and mouths along with the dialogue in her head.

Alice plugs in her phone at the nurses’ station and hands one ear bud to Camille. “With these, I can get the hell out of here whenever I want.” Led Zeppelin begins to play. The song is “Thank You.” And the scene cuts from the phone in Alice’s hand to the beat up phone in Camille’s car, playing the same song.

Driving through town, Camille sees Detective Willis’ car at the local diner and decides to stop in to talk to him. He shares with her (albeit inadvertently) that Vickery is convinced the two crimes were random. But Camille realizes that he does not agree with that hypothesis and says that she thinks the murderer knew the victims. Willis, realizing that she is trying to coax some more information from him, tells her to stay out of his way and abruptly leaves.

While sitting in her car outside of the Nash home (Ann’s family), Chief Vickery pulls up next to her to find out what she is doing. She asks him if he really thinks that a random trucker killed the two girls. He realizes that she has been talking to Detective Willis. This understandably upsets him, and he leaves.

Camille makes her way inside the Nash home and is listening to Bob Nash talk about his daughter. She asks him about his D.U.I. and assault charge. Bob says he got in a fight one night, but that does not mean he killed his daughter. To change the subject, Camille brings up the “woman in white” theory, and Bob says that he would bet money that the killer was a man. “The women around here, they don’t kill with their hands. They talk you dead.” Camille agrees with him.

Suddenly, Adora enters the room and apologizes for her daughter’s “interrogation.” She tells Camille that she is at the house for a social visit and that her presence is inappropriate. Camille leaves. The only thing Bob says, as a pathetic attempt to make Camille feel better, is that Adora tutored Ann, and that Ann was very fond of Adora.

Driving away from the Nash home, an angry Camille spots Amma roller skating through town. She decides to follow her. Eventually, they end up at their family’s hog farm, and she sees Amma in a farmhouse with a worker. The worker hands her a young pig, and they both leave the farmhouse. But before Amma closes the door, she turns and smiles at Camille, who is peering through the opposite door window, letting her know that she is aware that she followed her.

The scene ends without an explanation of what Amma wanted with the pig.

Back at the Preaker home, Adora serves Chief Vickery a cup of coffee and says she appreciates what he did about her daughter. “Which one?” he replies, and he tells Adora about Amma’s night at the field with the other teenagers after curfew. She asks him how he knew that Camille was at the Nashes, and he says that the police are watching him, and others. Adora asks him if he thinks the murders were random, and Vickery says that he isn’t sure, and that he might have to start entertaining the idea that they were not random.

Amma comes down from upstairs, and Adora confronts her about being out after curfew. Amma says that she should be allowed, since Camille was allowed when she was her age. “You don’t think bad things happened to girls back then?!” Amma says. Adora replies, “And look how she turned out. Your sister does not see herself in a good light. You need to be careful with Camille. She is not someone to be admired.”

“You are not safe around her.” And with that, Adora ends the conversation with Amma.

Camille arrives at John Keene and Ashley’s home. During their conversation about his sister Natalie, Camille mentions that Bob Nash and others around town noticed that John and his sister had a very close relationship and “spent a lot of time together.” John says that is true, but only because they were siblings. He asks Camille if Bob Nash described his “perfect Ann,” and that if Natalie and Ann had never met… But Ashley cuts him off and does not let him finish his sentence.

Camille asks John about his whereabouts the night his sister went missing. He says that he was out driving around, but Ashley says that is not the truth, that he is trying to protect her and was, in fact, with her that night. He attempts to argue with her about that, but she says that she does not want the town thinking he is guilty any more. It is unclear which one of the two is lying.

Back home, Camille sees Adora repairing the rose garden that Amma destroyed a few nights earlier. Adora immediately gives Camille hell (again) for bothering Bob Nash. Camille says that she didn’t mean to upset anyone, and Adora replies “You never mean to do anything. And yet you cause so much hurt.” Adora then accidentally (I think) cuts herself on a thorn, turns to Camille and says “Look what you’ve done!”

Camille relives another memory. Back in the hospital, she hears Alice crying in her bed. Alice asks her is family relations improve as one gets older. Camille says that they do not, not really. Alice asks her, “What do you do?” And Camille says, “You survive.” Camille later retrieves Alice’s phone from the nurses’ station, and says to her, “Let’s get outta here.” Camille lies next to her, and they listen to the music together.

Downstairs at home, Adora asks her husband, Alan, if Amma is safe with Camille in the house. Adora says her drinking, coming and going at all hours of the night worry her. Alan says that Camille is a grown woman. He then says to Adora, “Perhaps I should stay with you tonight…just in case….” Adora tells him that that will not be necessary.

Meanwhile, upstairs, Camille is finishing up her article and drinking very heavily. She eventually makes her way into her sister’s room. She sees a framed picture of her and Marian on the dresser. And when she picks it up, she sees in the reflection of the glass Alice, lying in Marian’s bed, with blood on her face. Camille drops the picture and runs out of the room.

Camille is at the local bar and sees Detective Willis there, too. She tells him that she spoke with John Keene earlier, which piques his interest. He asks her to tell him what John said, and in return, he would answer any three questions for her story. They leave the bar which is closing down for the night and end up at the high school parking lot.

While they are sitting on the car’s trunk, drinking from a bottle, Amma and some of her friends arrive. Amma relentlessly makes fun of Camille sitting with the detective and drinking, asking her if they’re dating. She tells Willis that there are many stories of Camille and the boys from when she was in high school. Camille gets angry, and threatens to hit Amma. Amma says, “You could kill me right here, and [Detective Willis] still couldn’t figure it out.” Eventually, she and her friends leave.

Camille drives off and drives down a lone highway at a dangerous speed. She thinks about the scene with Amma that just occurred, and it’s spliced with images of Alice from the hospital. We pick up from the scene where Camille and Alice are lying together in Alice’s bed, listening to music. Camille takes her phone back to the nurses’ station and makes a personal phone call on her phone. When she is done, the nurse escorts her back to the room, where they find Alice lying on the floor. She has taken her own life.

Camille immediately runs to the bathroom to throw up, and she sees a loose screw holding down the toilet lid. She removes the screw and begins to violently cut her wrist and arm.

At this point in the memory, Camille (in present time) slams on the breaks in the middle of the highway and throws Alice’s phone out the window.

‘Catfish’ Season 7, Episode 15 Recap – “Chelsea & Charles”

0

In this episode of Catfish, we start off in a hotel in Virginia Beach, VA, where Nev is bringing Max breakfast. Once they dig into their food, they also dig right into the story and begin a video from Chelsea.

Chelsea is 21, and she tells the story of how she met a guy named Charles on Plenty of Fish over a year ago. She says he’s nice, funny, and smart – and don’t forget attractive. She says they connected right away and she gained really strong feelings for him. She admits that she’s even thought about moving to Florida to be closer to him, but unfortunately they only message and have only ever had one phone conversation. She says that recently, one of her friends brought something to her attention that she thinks he might be lying about. She needs some help from Max and Nev to meet Charles and get some answers.

Since Chelsea left her phone number, Nev decides to Facetime her right away. Nev tries to get to know her a little bit, and we learn through his questioning that Chelsea is going to school to be a R.N., and she lives with her best friend Dominique and her mom. She talks a little bit more about how she met Charles on Plenty of Fish and how they talked on the phone at the beginning of their relationship but haven’t since. Max asks if she’s tried to call him and she admits that she has, and the number she had no longer works.

Nev asks about Charles, and Chelsea explains he’s 23 and he told her that he’s in the Navy, but when she told one of her Navy friends that her boyfriend was in the Navy and sent him a photo, her friend let her know that the uniform Charles was wearing in the photo is actually an Army uniform.

Max says that’s a rookie mistake to make, and asks if Chelsea thinks he’s lying about anything else. Chelsea says she has a feeling he might be lying about being married or having a child, and he just doesn’t want to tell her. Max suggests that since they’re in the same place anyway, they should just meet up in person.

After getting her address, Nev and Max take off to Chelsea’s house. Max doesn’t waste anytime with telling Nev how he really feels. “If you’ve gone a year and a half and the guy who ostensibly loves you can’t figure out how to be with you physically then he doesn’t really want to be with you.”

Nev counters with, “People feel like they find a special someone and they want to hang in there and they want to make it work, however long it takes.”

“Not worth it,” Max replies.

Arriving at Chelsea’s house, they exchange rather awkward-looking high fives, but things feel more comfortable once they see Chelsea and Nev have the same brand of shoes. Chelsea explains how she ended up living with her friend Dominique, Domo for short, and Nev asks how much Domo knows about Charles. Chelsea says that Domo does know about him, but she doesn’t know everything about him.

Nev backs everything up and asks to go back to the beginning. Chelsea says when she moved in with Domo, her phone was booming, and when she asked what app she was using Domo told her about Plenty of Fish. So Chelsea made a profile, and Charles messaged her and they “started vibing.” He called her, but it was a short conversation, and the next thing she knew he was asking if he could call her back.

When Nev asks why he never called her back, Chelsea says Charles told her he was so busy he couldn’t call her back, Nev exclaims, “Never?”

Chelsea says she didn’t want to push it so much that she pushed him away because she’s really feeling him. She thinks he really cares about how she feels and he isn’t one of those guys who’s only trying to have a sexual relationship. He’s really sweet, and they’ve even had conversations about their future, including her moving to Florida and having children together. For the first time, we hear Chelsea say that she’s in love with him.

After some more questioning from Nev and Max, we learn Charles only has Instagram and Plenty of Fish that Chelsea knows of, and they communicate solely through messaging on POF, except for that one brief phone conversation on the phone. Chelsea says he sounded like a young man on the phone, and Nev says, “Sometimes people will have like a friend get on the phone once. So it could be that Charles is actually a female, or it could be that Charles is somebody you know whose voice you would recognize. Is there anybody you can think of that is weirdly obsessed with you?”

Chelsea admits that her ex-boyfriend asks if she’s missing him, and Max jumps in to ask if Charles asks her if she misses her ex-boyfriend. Chelsea admits that he has before, and this is Max’s reaction:

Nev says he thinks they need to get a look at the guy, so Chelsea shows them Charles’ Instagram, and the instantly zero in on the photo of him in the Army uniform (not a Navy uniform)… with a name tag that has the last name Vaughn written on it. Chelsea pipes up saying that his last name is Richardson… which really doesn’t look good, does it?

Max agrees, saying, “I don’t like it.”

After Nev warns Chelsea that Charles may not be who he says he is, Chelsea says if it turns out that way she’s going to be angry because she doesn’t like to waste her time. With that, Nev responds they had better get to the bottom of this, and he and Max leave.

“It seems so obvious it’s a catfish, but when it seems obvious, there must be something more complex going on.”

“Our voice theory has never failed us,” Max agrees. “If someone won’t show their voice to someone, either they’re someone you know already, or they’re someone of the opposite sex.”

“Right. There’s a chance it could be a girl. I think it could be her ex-boyfriend,” Nev offers. “Either way, it’s not looking good for Chelsea.”

At this point in the episode, I’m with them. However, I will say that all during the first half of this season, they kept throwing me off with stuff like this. Making it seem super obvious that it’s a catfish, and then having the guy turn out to be exactly who he said he was all along. So that’s definitely rolling around in my mind as they cut to a commercial break.

When they come back, Max and Nev are setting up shop in a cafe. Nev orders a Portuguese donut, and Max made me laugh out loud when he said, “It sounds like a sex position or something! The Portuguese Donut!”

Things get serious again when they sit down in front of their laptop and give us a recap of what we know so far. They go to the email with Charles’ information supplied by Chelsea, and Max suggests starting with a reverse image search, saying, “We haven’t gotten a good photo hit in a long time.”

Nev runs two photos, then once they come up with nothing, they decide to go to his Instagram and grab some screen shots from there to run those photos. While on his Instagram, they see a “like” from username xo_domo_xo. Immediately, Nev says, “This feels suspicious.” They decide to respond to Chelsea’s email and ask for Dominique’s information. While they wait for a response, they run the images they grabbed from Instagram and strike out.

They look up the phone number next, and see it’s registered to www.bandwidth.com, which they explain away by saying it’s a text app. Next up, they run his handle to see if he has used the same one on any other social media sites. Still coming up blank, they decide to try to find the Vaughn guy from the Army. They do a Facebook search for “Vaughn US Army,” and after some scrolling, they find a man named Jalyll Vaughn who looks like he could be a match.

Clicking through his photos proves that “Charles” is in fact using Jalyll’s face, so they reach out to Jalyll to confirm he hasn’t been speaking to Chelsea. They send him a message, and then check Chelsea’s response about Domo’s information, and heeeey, xo_domo_xo is her best friend after all.

As Max says, “She could be following him because her best friend is dating the guy, but… suspicious!”

After some clicking around, they see that Charles follows Domo as well, and they decide to snoop around her page, which is filled with selfies. “She seems like such a confident person. Doesn’t seem like a catfish to me,” Max says. “She’s just too self involved.”

Just then, their phone rings and they Facetime with Jalyll to explain what’s going on. They ask if he knows who Chelsea is, and after he confirms that he doesn’t, they thank him for his service in the Army and end the call. Now knowing that the guy in the pictures is Jalyll, they know Charles is lying.

“We don’t know what he looks like. We don’t know where the phone is registered to. Why won’t this person talk on the phone?” Max asks.

“Because they’re female, they know their voice, or both. It sounds like it could be her friend,” Nev guesses.

But Max disagrees. “It’s not the friend. She’s more into herself than she is into her friend. I think it could be the ex-boyfriend.”

For me, I feel as stumped as Nev and Max. There’s no good evidence to support the ex-boyfriend or the best friend theory. At this point they’re just grasping at straws, and I’m just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Which, of course, is what happens as soon as they come back from commercial. Nev bursts into Max’s hotel room telling him they got a DM on Instagram saying, “Hey, I’m trying to reach Nev and Max. I need to talk to you. It’s about Chelsea, please call me.”

The person who messaged them has no posts and no followers, so they have no choice but to call them with the number provided… which goes right to voice mail. “It’s typical,” Max says. “We’re dealing with catfish, Nev. They’re not known for their responsiveness. They’re fish – they float.”

Nev leaves a voice mail, and they decide to call Chelsea and head over to her place to catch her up on what they’ve learned so far – which really isn’t much. They walk her through step by step, and the first reaction they get from Chelsea is surprise over Domo and Charles following each other. She didn’t know that was happening. Then Nev and Max tell her all about Jalyll, and Chelsea is (surprisingly?) shocked that Charles isn’t who he said he is.

“I wasted a year and a half on somebody who’s fake? I can’t trust anybody.”

Whomp, whomp. I’m sorry, but girl, have you seen this show? She already said she thought the guy might be married, so I’m not getting how she’s at all surprised he isn’t who he said he is.

Nev then tells her about the DM and the voice mail, which he plays for Chelsea, and she has a strong reaction to it.

Honestly, I was a little skeptical of this. They talked once, briefly, a year and a half ago and she remembers the dude’s voice? I don’t know about that.

They get a text message from the number that was DMed to them, and once Nev asks who it is, the person responds with, “Can we just meet in person?” Not willing to turn the person down, they hop in the car and drive to the person’s house when they provide an address.

Once they’re in the car, Chelsea admits she’s nervous because she thinks the person they’re texting is Charles based on the excuses he’s given so far. Max reminds her that they don’t know anything. “This could be a friend of the catfish, it could be an accomplice of the catfish, it could be the catfish.”

“I feel like it’s the catfish,” Chelsea says.

Nev answers, “Well, we’re about to find out.”

They pull in front of a house and see a man sitting on the front porch. “Do you know that guy?” Max asks.

“I’ve seen him before,” Chelsea answers.

Whaaaat?

Nev goes over to shake his hand, and the man introduces himself as Chad. Chelsea says she used to go to school with his brother, and she’s seen him around the neighborhood before. Nev cuts right to the chase and says that they don’t know what’s going on. Chad asks if Chelsea recognizes his voice, which Chelsea responds to with yes.

But he isn’t Charles. He apologizes for it, but explains that Charles just asked him to do him this favor and he did it. Chad invited him over, tried to get him to come clean, and Charles took off down the street five minutes ago. On foot.

Not surprisingly, Max, Nev, and Chelsea take off down the street after Charles.

Again, I hate to say it, but this part of the episode seemed really forced to me. It came across as contrived and unbelievable, and not in the fun way I usually feel about Catfish. It seemed scripted, it seemed planned, and I really disliked that part of this episode. While I understand there’s probably some acting involved in the show, I much prefer it when I can buy into the reality aspect of it, and this episode failed at that in my opinion.

Driving down the street, they come across a park where they see a woman sitting at a park bench. “Do you know this person?” Max asks.

“Is that who we’re looking for?” Nev asks.

“That’s Domo,” Chelsea confirms. “I don’t know if that’s who we’re looking for, but I don’t know why Domo would be out here.”

Once they get out of the car and approach her, Domo starts off with, “Before you get upset or anything, I just want to tell you Charles isn’t real. I’m Charles. I’ve had a crush on you for almost two years now. I really like you, I could say I love you – I do love you – but, you know, I don’t want to seem crazy or anything.”

“Why did you keep it going so long?” is the first question Chelsea has for her.

Domo explains she felt more confident portraying herself as a guy that she knew Chelsea liked. Domo lays all of the cards on the table, admitting that she wants to see if they could move on to be more than friends.

Nev asks some questions, and Domo tells us the only person who she told was Chad because she needed to make it seem legit at the beginning in order to get Chelsea to talk to her. The plan in the beginning was just to get a more intimate relationship with her. She says she doesn’t want to lose Chelsea as a friend, but she feels like if she can get Chelsea to feel “some type of way” for Charles, then she definitely thinks she could get her to feel the same type of way for her.

Chelsea says this is too much, she shouldn’t have done it this way, and she went about it all wrong. I can’t say I disagree. Chelsea needs a minute, so Nev takes a little walk with her to try to calm her down. Chelsea explains she’s really mad because of how far Domo took it for so long. Max tries to talk to Domo, telling her that what she did was definitely not the right way to go about this.

Max reminded us that Domo and Chelsea live together when he asked, “So when she’s messaging this guy all day every day, she doesn’t realize that she presses send and your phone buzzes?” Domo answers that she usually has her phone on silent. Max asks, “Do you guys sleep in the same room?”

“We sleep in the same bed,” Domo answers. And woooooah. That just got all kinds of weird for both of them! We have Domo sleeping in bed every night with the person she’s in love with, and Chelsea thinking she’s sleeping platonically with her best friend when she had no idea that she was feeling that way! That has to feel at least somewhat violating, I would think!

Meanwhile, Chelsea says to Nev that she’s going to have to leave for a couple of days because she can’t go back home with her. Nev offers to get Chelsea a room at their hotel, and they all make plans to meet up again tomorrow. Domo starts crying when they walk away, and Max comforts her by telling her if it’s any consolation, she did eventually do the right thing.

So the next day they meet back up at Chelsea and Domo’s house. Chelsea says she’s a little nervous about how Domo’s mom, Betty, is going to feel since she’s like a mom to Chelsea, too. Once they get to the house, Domo meets them outside and tells them that her mom is inside but doesn’t know what’s going on. She says she wants to tell her mom the circumstances since they all live together.

Nev takes the lead and explains to Betty why they’re there, then leaves the confession part to Domo. She tells her mom she had a crush on Chelsea and that she was too scared to tell her, so she made a fake POF account and started talking to her as Charles. Her mom says she’s disappointed and not something she would have thought Domo would do, but all in all, it’s a lesson learned for everybody. Betty seemed pretty chill. As a parent myself, I’m not sure I would react the same way after learning my child has been deceiving her best friend for a year and a half, but maybe she kept her cool for the benefit of the TV, I’m not sure.

Now that Betty has been brought into the loop, Nev and Max give Chelsea and Domo a chance to talk things out just between the two of them. It’s a short conversation, but it ultimately boils down to Chelsea saying she still wants to be best friends. She says, “I’m not saying I’m not gonna have a relationship with you other than best friends. It’s just that now you gotta build your trust up a little bit.” Which honestly surprised the heck out of me. She says she’s going to stay with her mom for a couple of weeks, and Domo says again that she never should have done what she did. They hug it out, and Nev and Max come back in to wrap everything up before they take Chelsea to her mom’s.

We get the black screen with two months later…  on it, and the girls are sitting together in the kitchen.

“What’s the status of things? Let’s just cut to the chase here! Come on!” Max prompts them.

Chelsea explains that she’s still feeling hurt a little bit, but they did go on a couple of dates, and they found things a little awkward between them. Domo says it felt different for her, and she wasn’t really feeling it how she thought she would, and said they should just keep it how it was. They’re continuing to work on their friendship, Chelsea just recently moved back in, and she’s happy to be back home.

Nev wrapped it up pretty well in the episode by saying it might not have worked out the way they both thought, but they learned a lot, they’re still friends, and that’s still pretty decent in the end. I’m going to leave you guys with that, too.

Catfish airs on MTV Wednesday nights at 9/8C, so make sure to tune in for the next episode!

Interview: Gino Graul from Family Business Beer Company [EXCLUSIVE]

Allen, Becky & Gino

A few weeks ago we sat down with Gino Graul, the manager and co-owner of Family Business Beer Company in Dripping Springs, Texas. After he got me a few delicious tasters, we hung out in the warehouse area, where the brewing actually takes place. The heat was sweltering, but the drinks were frosty as we chatted about Gino’s favorite subject – beer.

Nerds and Beyond: Tell me a little bit about the summer beers – I know last time I was out here you guys didn’t have Summer Spree and the Westie, those are fairly new.

Gino Graul:  Did we have the Aurora, the Vienna Lager?

Nerds and Beyond: Yes!

Gino Graul:  We were so upset that one left. The difficulty is that we’ve got 12 taps, so we fill those up pretty quick. Our whole business model is something new, mobile and variety, so we are always going to have some new beers that are seasonal releases, and season appropriate. The Vienna Lager was the first kind of summer beer that we started off with. We did the Aurora followed by the Americanas, and the German Helles. We also did the Spree which is just a Berliner Weisse, low ABV, kinda tart, very refreshing, kind of a patio pounder, and then a variation on that (The Summer Spree).

We enjoy doing kettle sours, and we did those on our pilots system as well. I think we brewed somewhere around 75 batches on the pilot system. We kind of went through at least a full season and a half in Texas. These beers are definitely geared towards summer and the warmer weather.

Nerds and Beyond: I didn’t get a chance to look at the ABV (alcohol by volume) on the new beers before we started – are they low across the board?

Gino Graul: Yeah. The Berliner, and the Sprees are mid 3%.

Nerds and Beyond: Especially when it’s hot, and people are sweating and it’s a windy road to get out here – seems like a good idea to have low ABV.

Gino Graul: We wanted to make sure that our beers were more sociable, and not one of those situations where you come in, you have one beer, an Imperial IPA (higher ABV), and now you are drunk. That’s not really the vibe that we have out here. It’s more like, come into contact with the brand, enjoy the product and find something that you like – which is why we offer flights. We actually switched our license from a manufacturing facility to a brewpub so we can offer beer to go. Unfortunately, Texas is the last of all 50 states to allow manufacturing facilities to sell beer on site. Which means you have to go to manufacturing facilities and essentially drink all you can because you can’t buy a six pack or a growler. We want it to be an enjoyable environment for people to come out and we don’t want people to feel obligated to drink. Try a flight, find something that you enjoy, drink a beer or two, hang out, and we’ve got the playground for kids. We’re about to launch a little snow cone stand with 22 flavors.

Nerds and Beyond: Oh that’s exciting. Is Jep going to run it (Jep & Jessica Roberts run “Jep’s Southern Roots” a southern inspired food truck onsite) or will it be FBBC?

Gino Graul: Kind of a collaboration. We basically provide everything but his kids are adamant that they want to work in snowball stand.

Outside of FBBC

Nerds and Beyond: How old are they?

Gino Graul: I think they’re in the 16 year old age range, I think it’s kinda perfect. We’ve got a supersized window unit in there so it’s like freezing cold. It was an idea that we had a long time ago but I have to keep reminding myself we’ve only opened 5 months ago, because I’m like…we’ve got to have all this done! But it’s kind of been pedal to the metal. It’s something that we have wanted to incorporate sooner than later.

The whole concept is that we are this brewery that you can bring the kids, they’ve got a snowball stand and they’ve got a huge fenced in playground that they can play in. Keep them entertained without an iPad or phone or anything like that. They can enjoy the hill country out here, and then the food trucks. The food is taken care of, the entertainment is taken care of. We are starting to do live music on Friday nights.

Nerds and Beyond: A lot of breweries, as I’m sure you know, do collaborations between one another. I know Stone has done a lot of collaboration between breweries. Is that something you guys are thinking of doing with local breweries here?

Gino Graul: We’ve talked to some of our friends at a couple of other breweries and just kind of spit balled the idea. Brewers are always looking to collaborate and do something fun. What my head brewer Nate was trying to get away from, was that if you’re distributing sometimes you can kind of get stuck, so you’re just basically doing the same recipes over and over and that’s not really that fun. We’ve got seven staples that we do here that will be on indefinitely unless something crazy would change it. But, you also want to have rotating beers that are seasonal or one-offs or something exciting.  Sadly, at the Craft Brewers Conference in Nashville it took the CBC to get all the Texas brewers together in one room. We do brewer’s nights one Monday a month. I think we will have to sign up to host here next year.

Nerds and Beyond: I did see that you guys attended a craft brewers night recently…in the last couple of weeks. Tell me about it.

Gino Graul: The last one was at Black Star, I think. The one before that was Oscar Blues. Mondays are like my only night off, I also recently got married. That’s one of two nights off that’s supposed to be a date night. She’s not a big beer drinker. You know it’s crazy – I was planning a ying-yang kind of thing. I’m the beer drinker and she’s the designated driver. I’m trying to talk her into going to Brewer’s night. She may take one for the team but pick a brewer that’s got sour beers because she likes sours.

Nerds and Beyond: That was my intro into beer too, that and sweet stouts. I’m starting to kind of branch more and more into lagers, and things like that. My question though is actually around that. If you’re going to set somebody up – somebody who comes out and they’ve got no experience with beer – what do you start them with here? How do you suggest they start to fall in love with beer?

Gino Graul: That does happen a good bit. I think what we’ve kind of done as a staff is pick some favorites. There’s like 20 people in line and they all say ‘so, I’ve never had a beer in my life’. Our staff are super excited and knowledgeable and they just want to launch into ‘What you’ve got is your four main ingredients…’ So it can be a little time consuming. I think for most people that don’t really like beers, very aggressive hopped beers can be an acquired taste. It’s kind of the same thing with my wife. I know don’t give her an IPA cause she’s not going to like it, but let her take a little sip. She [always] says ‘ew, oh my god, it tastes like…’ whatever. She always comes up with some kind of colorful term for it. But yes, starting off with the Sprees or the Koelsch – that would be really good because it’s very light and balanced.

Mash Tuns & Fermenters

Nerds and Beyond: So just in general lighter beers I suppose?

Gino Graul: Or the multi-tier beers like the King Biscuit ESB. You know we always have to tell them – they say ‘what’s ESB?’. It’s actually Extra Special Bitter but don’t think that it’s bitter – anybody hears bitter if they’re not familiar with the beer says, “yeah, I don’t want that.” It’s a very malty beer. So the King Biscuit is a good go-to for new beer drinkers and also the Oatmeal Brown Ale (The Hall & Oates).

Nerds and Beyond: You know I was surprised that I really enjoyed that. I mean not like an insult in any way but generally speaking not a type of beer that I would enjoy.

Gino Graul: I’ve never really been a big fan of brown ales but I don’t think I’ve found one that I don’t enjoy. The ones that I’ve had they were brown but only in color. There really wasn’t a lot of complexity with the flavor with them either. Then Nate made the Oatmeal Brown Ale and it’s just so complex and it’s got all the wonderful flavors, kind of like an Oatmeal cookie sweetness to it.

Nerds and Beyond: All right, I’m going to switch gears a little bit. I want to talk about some of the experiences that you’ve had since you said you’ve been open about six months. Obviously you know where I’m coming from – the Nerds and Beyond audience is comprised mostly of fans. Have you had any like crazy fan experiences?

Gino Graul: I’ll say 99.9% are fantastic people. They are genuine people. We understand that for a lot of them, like you said, it is kind of a pilgrimage. People drive in from all over. We want to make sure that they realize that they are appreciated. For what gets them here we’re very thankful, and we want to make sure that they have a great experience. That also, from the beer side, gives us an opportunity to turn somebody on to craft beer that may not have been a beer drinker. Most of the reviews that we’ve got online from people that come out on a pilgrimage say ‘I was just blown away by the quality of the beer’. So that that’s really what we’re going for. We’ve been able to advertise on a platform that most breweries don’t have. You know again, very thankful that we had that opportunity. I also feel a sense of responsibility to make sure that we represent Texas craft beer in the right way, and that we also can allow the brewery to stand on its own merit and the quality of the beer. For the brewery, that’s that’s the most important thing is that we’re recognized for making quality product. And you know, yes we do have a notable owner.

Nerds and Beyond: Owners.

Gino Graul: (Laughs) Owners, yes. My sister would kill me…

Nerds and Beyond: I was just going to ask you… I mean obviously it’s a family business. There’s a lot of family involved. I know your parents are involved too. I’m really close with my brother and I was thinking how it would be kind of cool to run a business with my sibling. What’s it like working with your sister?

Gino Graul: It’s great. Honestly, we’ve always had a really good relationship. I think since we started this business, even the business idea in 2010, somewhere around there, it’s definitely strengthened our relationship. I think it honestly could go either way sometimes, personalities can kind of clash. But she’s super creative and so we lean on her heavily for design ideas.

Nerds and Beyond: Her sense of style is really incredible.

FBBC Growler Carrier, now on sale at the brewery!

Gino Graul: It really is. So sometimes she’s like, “well I’m decking out the tasting room, it’s my baby.” I’m like OK that’s fine – from the tap handles back, that is my domain. We’re not going to have any crossover and so she handled the build out and got all the artists together. Adam Young built the bar with 110-year-old long leaf pine reclaimed from a school in West Texas. She definitely put a lot of love and time into making sure it was exactly what we wanted to present when people come in, kind of a wow factor in a way. You come in, you’re like, wow, this is not just a dingy old brewery in the standard warehouse district or something like that.

Nerds and Beyond: That’s 90% of breweries.

Gino Graul: Nothing wrong with that because I’ve had some of the best beers of my life in those places and I still go there. But we wanted to be a little different and have a location that’s more representative of who we are – we’re craftsman.

Nerds and Beyond: I want to talk about the future – I know you guys talked about maybe having some taps in town but not a big thing. Maybe doing something here as far as a wedding venue? What are your plans?

Gino Graul: Maybe an event center or an event space. Gosh, I can only imagine doing a wedding here, I would lean heavily on Danneel to make sure that that was exactly what she wanted because her sense of style is amazing. We definitely want to have an event space out here, I think it would be perfect for it. We still haven’t even started to tackle permitting and all that kind of stuff. We’re in an environmentally sensitive area which works out for us because we love this land and we’re willing to go through whatever red tape or whatever we need to do to make it happen.

We truck all of our water in and all of our production wastewater out. We’ve got a very small septic system that just handles the waste from restrooms and every other drop of water is trucked out of here. It’s not a cheap way of doing things but we were in love with the land and we wanted to be here. So we are willing to basically do what it takes.

As far as distribution out in town, Nate and I are very OCD with our quality control. We want to first off make sure that we’ve got enough beer to supply our tasting room and if there’s any leftover after we brew we can make our projections on what we need before we need to brew again. If there’s 10 kegs of something left over we’d go around town and find a couple places that we know handle beer well. We want to make sure that we put our product in places where they appreciate craft beer and then they also know how to sell them as well.

Nerds and Beyond: I would suspect that there’s a lot of places here in Austin.

Gino Graul: I think the demographic in Austin appreciates craft beer, especially local. That was something that we adored the second we got here. It’s like people really enjoy craft beer and they want something that’s local. That that kind of worked out with our business model. You know we want people to come out here and enjoy the space that we built.

Nerds and Beyond: Is there anything else you want to add. What are people not asking about? What do you want to put out there?

Gino Graul: Good question. I think a lot of questions we get online is on distribution. ‘I’m in France, where can I find your beer?’ I don’t think they realize we’ve got a very small system.  Our 15 barrel system is perfect for a brew pub but we wouldn’t really be able to canvas even half of Austin if we wanted to. So I was trying to advocate – road trip. Come on down and visit and you can get beers to go. I’m hoping within a year we’ll start canning and be able to sell it to go.

It’s always a pleasure to have a beer at my favorite brewery, even if its quite a trip for this California gal. Thank you to Gino for taking the time to talk with us. Have you made a trip out to Family Business Beer Company yet, or are planning to? Tell us your plans in the comments below!
