New Netflix Series ‘Another Life’ Begins Filming

0

We can confirm that filming has commenced for the Netflix sci-fi drama Another Life. The new series will feature many familiar faces including actor Jake Abel (Supernatural and Percy Jackson), who posted the below image from set.

Another Life is a 10-episode series focusing on astronaut Niko Breckinridge, played by Katee Sackhoff, who leads her crew on a dangerous mission aboard The Salvare to discover the origin of an alien artifact. The perilous journey quickly has her and the young crew thinking this may be a one-way mission.

Jake Abel joins the cast as Sasha Harrison, the wealthy son of the U.S. Secretary of Defense. Harrison had no desire to venture in space but joins the mission as the government representative. The ambitious Harrison has presidential aspirations, and hopes that a successful mission will someday gain him the Oval Office.

Alexander Eling of Shadowhunters, also joins the crew aboard The Salvare as a computer engineer with a difficult and shady past.

Michelle Vargas, an abrasive communications expert played by Jessica Camacho of The Flash, will add a little spice to the crew. An aggressive personality and a no nonsense a way of thinking will likely cause conflicts with fellow astronauts.

Lina Renna (The 100) plays Jana Breckinridge-Wallace, the daughter of Breckinridge and Erik Wallace (Justin Chatwin). As we might expect from the daughter of The Salvere’s Captain, she will be a tenacious, daring and clever. Life on the ground with only her father brings unique challenges for young Jana.

Another Life will weave an interesting tale of life aboard a ship that may well not return to Earth while commanders and families back home await the new discoveries of The Salvare. After Life was picked up by Netflix last April and is expected to be available sometime in 2019.

Join Misha Collins, Matt Cohen, Rob Benedict and More at ‘The Giving Back Tour’ This Weekend!

This weekend, from September 21-23, marks the first weekend of The Giving Back Tour, a new Supernatural convention style from Creation Entertainment.

This weekend, members of the Supernatural cast will be in Indianapolis, Indiana for a three-day convention. The cast regularly does shows around the world all year long, but this is the first time this particular style of convention is taking place!

The tour features actors such as Misha Collins, Matt Cohen, Rob Benedict, Richard Speight, Jr., Kim Rhodes, Briana Buckmaster, Alexander Calvert, Ruth Connell, Mark Pellegrino, Rachel Miner, Jason Manns, David Haydn-Jones, Samantha Smith and Carrie Genzel.

What is The Giving Back Tour? We’re glad you asked.

It’s an immersive, interactive fan experience that fans are not going to forget. There’s quests, which are outlined by Creation below:

Every stop on the Giving Back Tour features two main Quests that the attendees can participate in: The Charitable Con-Quest, and the Creative Quest!

Charitable Con-Quest
Get ready for the Giving Back Tour featuring the Kindness Con-Quest with Random Acts!

This quest will send you on all kinds of fun and (of course) weird tasks throughout the convention. These tasks will have you working with your fellow con-goers and stars to spread plenty of weirdness and kindness, and will include doing kindnesses to benefit Horizon House in Indianapolis. In the Kindness Con-Quest you can earn points, move up the levels, and win prizes along the way, and those that reach the top will achieve a special prize given only at this convention! Step outside your comfort zone and get creative, quirky, and join us for a great time in Indianapolis!

Creative Quest
Harness your creativity and join us on the Creative Quest! The Quest will challenge you to tap into your inner artist and create something amazing. With a SUPERNATURAL twist, of course!

The theme for this Creative Quest will be “CARS” because it’s Indianapolis, folks, home of the Indy 500!

With the theme in mind, you can create a piece/work of art such as — paint, watercolor, pencil, ink, mixed media, 2D or 3D, sculpture, textural (costumes), photography prints, prose, poetry, music recorded (original music ONLY) or any other artistic expression. Unfortunately, no video, live performances or conceptual arts are allowed.

You can work alone or as a team to create your pieces, and they will be judged at the show. Click HERE for all the rules and guidelines!

There will be one winner selected for each category of piece/work of art submitted, and one randomly selected participant will win an outrageous GRAND prize, to be announced!

Instead of the normal Q&A panels you’d see at any of the other Supernatural conventions, this one will have fans interacting with the guests on stage in a way that is completely unique!

Here’s some of the things you’ll be able to do:

Film a Scene from Supernatural with Misha Collins

Attendees will be selected at the show both for acting and production roles in creating this scene, and the audience will watch as it is filmed live on stage!

Heads up with Alexander Calvert

Now is your chance to help Alexander Calvert guess the mystery word that he will have displayed on his forehead. A few volunteers will be picked from the audience and they will try their best to help Alexander out!

Lucifer’s Trivial Pursuit

Get ready because Mark Pellegrino is ready to play trivial pursuit Supernatural Edition with a few lucky fans from the audience!

Charades with Rob Benedict, Matt Cohen and Richard Speight, Jr.

Each of the guys will captain a team of 10 lucky attendees (randomly picked from our audience) and the three teams will compete against each other for Charade Domination, with the winning team receiving great gifts and bragging rights!

Sing with Louden Swain

One lucky fan will be chosen at random at the Convention to sing onstage at some point during the weekend with Rob, Billy, Mike and Stephen!

Mad Libs with Rachel Miner

Several lucky audience members will help Rachel in creating an unforgettable adventure with your favorite characters.

Monster Mashup with Kim Rhodes and Briana Buckmaster

Three people from the audience will be chosen to get on stage and participate in an improv-style, pictionary-like game. Each participant will have two minutes to draw monsters from the suggestions of their fellow SPN family in the audience. Once the two minutes are up, Kim and Briana will have thirty seconds to name and describe the monsters that are drawn. The audience will then vote on a winner!

Flash Mob Dance with Ruth Connell

Get yer jiggle on witchy style and strut your stuff with the Roro mega mix flash mob dance.

There will be more exciting events as well, such as the Saturday Night Special concert with Louden Swain, Sammies with Sam Smith, Ruth’s Witching Hour, Kim & Briana’s PJ Party Night, Director Dick Chat with Richard Speight, Jr., and Friday Night Karaoke!

You’ll be able to still get autographs and photo ops, of course! Take a look at the video below to see how much fun photo ops are!

There’s so many fun things to do at this convention! For more information and to purchase tickets, visit Creation Entertainment!

10 Years of Castiel on ‘Supernatural’ – The Profound Bond With Fans

0

On September 18, 2008, Misha Collins debuted his character, Castiel, on Supernatural. Here at Nerds and Beyond, we have been celebrating by posting an article a day taking a look back at some of the biggest moments Castiel has had in the last ten seasons of Supernatural. We’ve seen all of his shortcomings and watched as he redeemed himself again and again.

What’s interesting about Castiel is that at his core, he is a flawed character with an immense lack of foresight, but even in spite of that, he is lovable enough to be worshiped by viewers. Castiel has a huge fan following and many fans loudly proclaim that he’s their favorite character on Supernatural. Unbelievably, people everywhere relate to Misha Collins’ portrayal of a celestial being! Wanting to delve into that dynamic a little bit deeper, we spoke to some of our staff members about how Castiel stole their hearts.

Get the tissues, because you’re going to need them.

“I think for me, the most memorable part of Castiel, the reason why he’s my favorite, is because he’s so damn tenacious. Good, bad or ugly, that angel makes choices. There’s nothing wishy-washy about him. And he always does what he thinks is in the best interest of the people he loves and the good of humanity.

Does that always work out super great for him? Heck no! But for an angel who is still trying to learn about the world and where he fits into it outside of the parameters of Heaven, I’d say he’s doing a pretty decent job.

There have been many times where Castiel could have simply chosen not to fight. To be honest, most of the times he’s sacrificed and pushed had little to do with his own self-interest. I think there’s something in that selflessness that a lot of us want to personify. In that way, Castiel is a character we can look up to. We’re all going to try and fail, and it’s going to make us sad. But Castiel never gives up – and neither should we.” — Becky

“For me, Castiel has always been a part of Supernatural. I started watching the show during his first episode and Castiel is one of the biggest reasons I continued. Here was this fish out of water who thought he knew what he believed, but suddenly he was seeing that maybe things were not as black and white as he knew them to be. And instead of refusing to grow, he latched on to every opportunity to learn more.

His biggest concern has always been taking care of his family. Whether that means his angel brothers and sisters or Dean and Sam. He wants everyone to be okay, possibly to a fault. But that is a personality trait that so many can relate to. I cannot imagine the show without him. Watching Castiel grow has been one of the highlights for me. Every time he falls he gets back up. He is an angel, yes, but he shows us all how to be human.” — Em

“From the minute Cas made his appearance in that barn and flared his wings to prove his angel heritage to Dean, I’ve been intrigued, captivated and delighted by him. He has endured and sacrificed so much and all for the greater good. He has transformed from a conflicted heavenly soldier just following orders to a full-fledged member of Team Free Will.

One of my favorite Cas moments happens in the second episode of Season’s 4 when he tells Dean, “You should show me some respect. I pulled you out of hell and I can throw you back in.” He is full borne angel at this point and a total badass.

I can’t believe it’s been ten years since Cas joined the Winchesters. It feels like he’s been there since the beginning and the show would not be the same without him.” — Deb

“Before I joined this fandom, I was already aware how special Castiel was. I could see the love for the angel in every post that crossed my path. It wasn’t until the Season 6 episode, “The Third Man” when Castiel said, “My people skills are rusty,” that he truly became a special character in my heart.  With that sentiment and the awkward finger quotes, it was the first time I found something I could relate to. I’ve had social anxiety my whole life, so I understand the awkwardness and rusty people skills.

From there on, I’ve found Castiel to truly be one of my favorite characters. I’ve laughed at his humor and awkwardness. My heart’s broken for him at the times he’s been lost or hurt. I’ve cheered at the times he’s succeeded. And I’ve been in awe when he’s fought like the warrior he is. I’ve appreciated every single scene Castiel has been in over these 10 years, and I’ll appreciate every single one to come!” Melanie

“Cas is such an intriguing and endearing character. Even in a world full of crazy, we are able to take and share real life lessons from him. Cas is notorious for making wrong decisions for the right reasons. Practically everyone can say that they have done that same exact thing themselves. It makes his character relatable for me to see how this being with amazing powers can make the same mistakes that normal humans do, and how he deals with the consequences that comes with those choices.

I also love how Cas makes me laugh. From his awkward social interactions to not getting pop-culture references to his general sass, the angel can have me giggling no matter how many times I have heard or watched a specific scene before.

I wish I could say what my favorite moment I have of Cas is, but there are just way too many to count. Every time I think I have narrowed down my list, I think of another three times where I fell even more in love with him. I am so looking forward to seeing more from Castiel in Season 14 as we watch how he continues to love and learn about humanity. Hopefully, he is also able to make us all roll off our couches laughing at some point, too!” — Hailee

“When ‘Supernatural’ introduced angels like Castiel to the story in Season 4, I did not know what to make of it at first. As the seasons and story lines progressed, now I cannot imagine the show without them. Castiel has become an integral member of ‘Team Free Will’ and has repeatedly given everything for his chosen family including his life and grace. To think that his character was only supposed to be there for a few episodes and now we are going into Season 14. That alone should tell us how important Castiel is as a character to the story and the Winchesters.

Castiel embodies hope, he fights for what he thinks is right even when it is the wrong choice, it is a choice he made thinking it would help. Through the belief in his choices, he has hope for a better outcome for the world and his family.

It may have started with Castiel working under Heaven’s orders to break Dean out of Hell, but in the end, they all rescue and balance each other out. I cannot wait to see what Season 14 brings for the characters.” — Sarah

“Well, I actually started watching ‘Supernatural’ because of Castiel. Castiel pictures kept showing up on my Pinterest and finally I just wanted to know who Castiel was. I started watching Supernatural from the beginning and couldn’t wait to see the angel. And boy, he did not disappoint! From the minute Cas walked into that barn, I was hooked. I watched him break his years of programming and rebel to help humanity.

Cas dealt with human issues, even when he had his wings. Things like abandonment and trust issues, anxiety, and maybe even depression. He tried so hard to do what he thought was the right thing and protect the people he cares about. Those things – watching an angel going through some of the same emotions and feelings I was having – helped me through a lot. Cas taught me to not give up, and to stand by what I believed in, even if I was the only person standing.” — Nicole

“Castiel has had a very special place in my heart from the moment he arrived. He begins his journey knowing only the theory of humanity, unsure why they are worth protecting but he does as God commanded; he protects and loves them unconditionally anyway.

We are told that emotions do not come naturally to angels, but throughout the 10 seasons of Supernatural we have watched Cas learn to feel and embrace those emotions. He learns to love, feel regret, fear for his and others’ lives and to hope for a brighter future, all before our eyes.

He learns to make decisions for himself based on more than hard facts. From battling his own family to allowing Lucifer to possess him even though it likely meant death, Cas never hesitates to do what he feels is right.

As I have watched Cas dedicate himself to his cause and strive to do better, I have tried to mimic the same goodness in my life. Our world is tough and harsh, but kindness and goodness can combat those malicious forces. We can choose, as Castiel did, to project good and protect the innocent. — Brianna

“The first time I sat down to watch ‘Supernatural,’ season one terrified me. After sitting through half of the first season I stopped watching for months. A friend told me that the show got easier to watch later on, so I decided to skip a few seasons. (Unconventional, I know.) I had seen this trenchcoated, black-haired character in a few Tumblr posts, so I looked up when he showed up and landed on season 4. And I liked ‘Supernatural ‘with Castiel a whole lot more.

I am not Sam or Dean. I am not the it girl with the bow-legged swagger and seemingly endless know how. But Cas – Cas I can relate to. Cas is socially awkward, but always well-meaning. He is loyal and fiercely protective of his family – both blood and found. It takes him a while to find his place on Earth, but once he does, it is his home. I too have struggled to find my place in the world, and seeing someone on my screen on that journey who is able to find that love and support gave me, and thousands of others, hope.

‘Supernatural’ changed when Castiel blasted through those barn doors. I did, too. And we both changed for the better. — Emily

It seems as if everybody here agrees: Castiel is the perfect example of a good guy who makes big mistakes. He’s the awkward outsider who never quite seems to fit in with the “cool guys” but is loved by everybody just the same. He makes us laugh with his unique inability to completely miss jokes and references, and he makes us snicker with his sass and sarcasm. He stands up for what he believes in no matter how hard it is, even if it means going against the people he loves most.

Though we have been focusing on Castiel rather than Misha Collins in this series so far, it has to be acknowledged that Castiel would not have been the same played by anyone but Collins, and the Supernatural family would not be the same without him, either. So while this entire series has been a love letter to one of our favorite characters on Supernatural, we also want to take a moment to say thank you to the man inside the trench coat, and congratulate Misha Collins on being an integral part of Supernatural for the last decade. Collins’ portrayal of Castiel has had a lasting impact on numerous people around the world, and the time, dedication, and passion poured into this character is deeply appreciated by the fans.

In a lot of ways, Castiel isn’t just a character on a television show. He is a part of many of us now, and he will be remembered with fondness long after Supernatural ends. Please join us in celebrating 10 years of Castiel all day long by sharing what he means to you with the hashtag #10YearsOfCastiel on social media. We can’t wait to see what you have to say!

Cycle for Charity: A Review of Jensen and Danneel Ackles’ SoulCycle Event

An endorphin high for all involved, the September 15th SoulCycle charity event with Danneel and Jensen Ackles was an amazing experience. Nerds and Beyond had two writers on hand to bring you a first-hand report of the day! Together, those involved raised an impressive $28,000 for Random Acts and Out Youth, an Austin based charity that provides support to LGBTQ+ youth.

There were two classes for the event, and we were in the last class. Before riders even reached the spin room, Danneel and Jensen greeted everyone and snapped pictures with those leaving the 3pm class, and ensuring new arrivals felt welcomed.

As you entered the spin room with your special bike shoes (that you feel like you will fall over in), upbeat music played in the darkened space. Staff walked around to help set up bikes correctly and explain how SoulCycle works. Waiting for the class to start, riders sat on their bikes grooving to the music and pumping their legs to get warmed up.

As we waited, Danneel welcomed each and every biker, walking around and shaking their hands, asking names and thanking them for their donations and for being there. Jensen was equally welcoming and helped riders set up their bikes, handed out seat cushions and ensured everyone who needed water got it. We were a little hesitant on how exactly a SoulCycle class worked but our class instructor, Chris Chandler, made sure everyone felt welcomed and included during the entire workout.

The mood of the room was nervous excitement, but the second that Chris started the class, the atmosphere shifted. He cranked up the music to a barely tolerable volume, the room went almost completely dark, and it was just you, your bike, and the beat. If needed, you could easily see everyone around as your eyes adjusted, but it was not necessary except for being able to look at how much fun our hosts were having with all of us.

This SoulCycle class was specially tailored to the Supernatural fans present with the playlist including several classics. We kicked off the session with one of Jensen’s favorite jams, “Alive”. We rocked out, head-banged and punched the air with him as he encouraged everyone to work hard. We kept the momentum going with “Personal Jesus” as people were invited to sing along. While Jensen clearly got his workout in, he made sure to sit back and engage with cyclers, pointing and smiling as we jived to the music.

Chris attempted to lure Jensen off his bike for the next song, “Eye of the Tiger”, but he opted to remain on the bike. Chris would not be discouraged and convinced Clif, ever the good sport, to dramatically cat-walk across the room. Jensen did, however, rock out hard to the song and even did his famous ‘Eye of the Tiger arms’ to the cheers of every rider.

Knowing his audience, Chris also included “Carry On Wayward Son”. Every single biker screamed the lyrics, jamming in unison with Jensen and Danneel as we pedaled to the beat of that fan favorite. Chris would have us slow down to an almost crawl in some spots to sing our hearts out, and then have us sprint during the instrumental sections. It is surprisingly difficult to do both simultaneously; only Jensen and Chris seem to have mastered this ability.

Chris prefaced the next song by looking at Danneel and asking, “You like Zepplin right?” The whole room laughed and cheered as she shrugged lightly adding “just a little”. We all waved our towels above our heads as “Rock and Roll” began to play, and we committed to our biking journey once more.

Our next song was the arm workout. Riders were provided with small weights to use if they were so inclined. Chris walked around the room and described the movements and choreography while Jensen demonstrated with his 5-lb weights. The song for this arm workout, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” was made to move to. Jensen refused to sing the lyrics himself, but coyly snuck glances at Danneel, who was singing every word, with a small smirk on his face.

Toward the end, Chris played the powerful song “Boys in the Street”. Lights were turned out completely, and we were told to pedal slowly. In this class, in that moment, we could be exactly who we were and nothing else. Feel exactly what we needed to and never hold back our emotions.

Our final big workout song before cooling down was “Sweet Child O’ Mine.” Chris had us sprint as hard as we could during the instrumental sections. We caught our breath and belted the song out during the vocals. Chris and Jensen pointed out people that were really getting into it (including our writer, Hailee). The final 45-seconds of the song was an all-out sprint to the finish line as everyone tried to complete the workout with bang.

We cooled down and stretched to “Ironic,” while Chris gave one of the most inspirational talks we have ever heard when exercising. The theme of the entire class was to be the best you that you can be and give all of your energy to being the version of yourself you want to see.

When pedaling, the riders were encouraged to work out as hard as they could, but this was done with absolutely no judgment or expectation of what that should look like. Everyone received the same praise whether you sat on the seat and slow-peddled the entire class or if you were as much of an expert as Danneel and Jensen. The energy of the room was one of acceptance and comradery rather than the typical disconnected gym mentality.

After the class we gathered outside for a great group photo taken by SoulCycle.

We (Brianna and Hailee) also snapped a few photos with Danneel and Jensen, joking with Danneel about her glitter covered hair and shoulders due to her sparkly headband.

Hailee with Jensen and Danneel
Brianna with Jensen and Danneel

We then got down to business asking two staple questions of Nerds and Beyond. Firstly, we asked Jensen his favorite dad joke. He thought seriously for a few seconds and said, “You know what, I’m kind of anti-dad joke.” Not to be discouraged, we also asked Jensen what kind of light saber he would have if he could design his own.

Again he thought for a moment and definitively answered, “Lightning bolt,” as he waved his hand through the air mimicking the jagged movement of lightning.

We then grabbed Danneel’s attention to ask her the same question. She thought hard about it and then stated as if it should have been obvious to her, “Oh! Of course, rainbows!”

Both Danneel and Jensen made sure to give every single person there a fantastic experience. They were attentive and utterly focused on whomever they were talking to or taking pictures with. Jensen doubled checked that everyone got a picture before he even thought about gathering his things to leave.

Chris was also willing to take pictures with people and answer any questions they had about the class and SoulCycle in general. He urged everyone to come back, visit their own SoulCycle or just get out and moving no matter the circumstances.

Overall it was an amazing affair full of high energy and love. Plus, we were able to help Jensen get prepared for the Bad Idea Tour and raise money for two wonderful charities. This experience is one that no one who participated will ever forget. Many thanks to Danneel and Jensen for hosting and everyone involved in the organization of this once in a lifetime event.
