Spidey did join the Fantastic Four and the team became known as the Future Foundation– which is where the black and white suit comes from.

These suits are available as part of patch 1.14 for the game which can be accessed in the PlayStation Network.

‘The Good Place’ Season Three Finale is a Tear-Jerker

0

The Good Place season 3 finale ‘Pandemonium’ picks up right where ‘Chidi Sees the Time Knife’ left off. After realizing that no one had gotten into the Good Place for hundreds of years, Michael set up a meeting with the (always amazing) Judge in IHOP (Inter-dimensional Hole of Pancakes). He tried to convince her that it is the modern day world keeping people out of the Good Place. The Judge visited earth, and seeing how crazy things were, allowed Michael to build another fake Good Place and get a new crop of humans. He promised to show that people are able to change and do good outside of the modern real world. But when the first human arrived, the enormity of the stakes truly hit Michael. If they failed, it would doom humans for eternity.

‘Pandemonium’ opens with Michael hiding in his office in full panic mode. He refuses to open the door for the new arrival. After Eleanor tries and fails to calm him down, she welcomes the new arrival herself. She poses as The Architect and manages to bluff her way through the welcome.  The new arrival is John, an entertainment blogger. Eleanor, Michael, and Janet help him get acclimated to the place and leave him to relax. So far so good. However, when Tahani meets him, we find there is a hitch in the plan.

John’s blog often targeted Tahani for his takedowns on earth. Tahani is upset and knows this could not have been a coincidence. The Soul Squad quickly realizes that Shawn, the delightfully mean manager of Hell, has gamed the system. He chose four subjects who would create chaos and damage their ability to pull off the experiment. Before they can complain to the Judge, Chidi’s ex-girlfriend Simone arrives. Then they call the Judge who says it was sneaky of Shawn, though admits it wasn’t technically against the rules. As a compromise, she allows them to wipe Simone’s memory of life on earth and tells Shawn to knock it off.

This seems to be a workable solution, until Chidi confesses that he won’t be able to go along with the plan.  Chidi is many things, but smooth is not one of them. He knows that he will eventually slip and indicate that he knows her, and it will ruin the entire operation. Since Chidi doesn’t want to be the cause of humanity’s eternal ruination, he asks to have his memory wiped as well. This is devastating, because Chidi will forget Eleanor just as they have found love together. Michael makes a tear jerker of a slide show as a send off for the two of them. The episode ends with Eleanor welcoming a re-set Chidi to The Good Place.

This ending sets up a few interesting dynamics for season 4. We are back in a fake Good Place like in season 1, but everything else is different. Instead of trying to save themselves, the Soul Squad is trying to save humanity. Eleanor has taken on the role of The Architect, so she will grow into herself even more.  John the entertainment blogger will provide a new foil for Tahani now that the Kamilah issues are mostly resolved. This will be a great opportunity for more Jameela Jamil comedic brilliance. Also, there is a will-they-won’t-they romantic relationship at the center of the plot. The romantic entanglements have always been secondary in The Good Place. But now with Chidi’s memory erased and his lovely ex-girlfriend Simone around it raises the question – which ex-girlfriend will he fall for this go around? Eleanor, or Simone?

The love triangle is the only element I am a little wary of. One of my favorite aspects of Mike Schur shows (Brooklyn 99, Parks and Recreation) is that they aren’t afraid to get couples together. Hollywood decided sometime in the 80’s that getting a couple together ruins a show by draining it of all tension. The result has been show after show with a make up to break up cycle complete with constant manufactured drama. I find it tiresome and cliche. But Jake/Amy, and Ben/Leslie showed that you can have a couple get together and it can make the show better.  Opening up that option allows writers to follow the story rather than look for contrived obstacles. Also, I don’t want to see Eleanor or the viewers pitted against Simone. The show has dealt with this well in past episodes but it can be a tough balance to strike.

The best news is that The Good Place has been renewed for a season 4, so we will get to see the Soul Squad work it out sometime later in 2019.  Until then, enjoy this novelty song about The Good Place posted this week by @songadaymann on Twitter. You’ll have “Ya basic, here’s a cactus” stuck in your head until season 4 returns.

‘The Orville’ Season 2, Episode 5 Review: “All The World Is Birthday Cake”

0

Part of what I love about The Orville is the way it avoids long term adversarial story lines and focuses more on weekly problems to be solved. It definitely hearkens back to the Star Trek series of old. For me, it has a very early season Star Trek: The Next Generation feel that is appreciated. As someone who misses the camaraderie of that crew terribly, I have loved every minute of this show.

In this week’s installment, what seems to be a big problem will have a not-too-predictable solution. And what seems like a rather innocuous first encounter quickly becomes a life-threatening situation.

Spoilers Below

Last week, we lost Alara and truthfully, I’m still not over it. The show must go on though, so we were introduced to a new Chief of Security this week in “All The World Is Birthday Cake.” Lt. Talla Keylai is the same species as Alara, but that is where the similarities end. She’s brash and intense with a splash of sarcasm, and the first thing we learn about her is that she punched a previous captain “into next week,” because she had to. I got the feeling that Mercer isn’t so sure about her after this exchange. But of course she is going to get the chance to prove herself. Don’t worry — she will.

Cmdr. Kelly Greyson has been hemming and hawing about asking Bortis to share a birthday party with her, since their birthdays are so close. When she finally asks him, Bortis turns her down cold. Bortis has a very “Warf”-ish personality that I love. He’s so dry, he makes a desert look like a rain forest. And apparently it’s not even a species trait, because his partner Klyden is nothing like that. He is good for at least a couple laughs almost every episode, but I digress. This birthday planning isn’t just cute… it’s foreshadowing. Stay with me.

Talla picks up on microwaves carrying a message and, once decoded, everyone is thrilled that “Is anyone out there?” is a clear indicator that they are headed for their first official First Contact mission. Mercer gives the order to head towards the planet, and he, Kelly, Bortis, Talla, and Dr. Finn head down to meet the inhabitants of the new planet.

It’s a very earth-like civilization, and they are greeted warmly by government officials in a big city. Everyone is friendly and eager to learn about each other, so a tour commences where Dr. Finn and Talla get to see the medical facilities. Their technology looks very much like what we would recognize as a normal hospital facility and equipment now, but it is quite primitive looking to the Orville crew. The first taste of a problem comes when Dr. Finn realizes they are performing c-sections early for seemingly no reason. When she questions it, the medical staff seem shocked that she doesn’t know. Apparently it is to prevent them from being born “gilliac”. We don’t know what that is yet, but it won’t be long before it creates a problem for our crew.

At a dinner that evening with the Rigorite government officials, Kelly announces that she and Bortis have a birthday coming up, and before she can even finish her statement, the First Prefect and his staff are shouting for security. No one is really sure what is going on, but the entire crew is arrested, and Kelly and Bortis are separated from the rest. It’s not until after samples are taken from Talla, Mercer, and Dr. Finn to prove their birth dates that they are allowed to meet with the First Prefect and find out what is going on.

The Prefect explains that a gilliac is someone born under the sign of the Gilliac, a constellation. The belief is that a gilliac is innately violent and, as such, needs to be separated from civilized society. Kelly and Bortis have been moved to a camp for gilliacs, and the crew heads back to the Orville and are told not to return.

Kelly and Bortis step out of a truck wearing red jumpsuits and meet immediately with the camp leader, a pompous and arrogant warden of sorts. He is quick to inform them of their place, and this sets off a weak attempt to free themselves, which only gets Kelly kicked around. Any further insurrection will result in their death. Again, this is some thinly-veiled foreshadowing.

Back on the Orville, the crew is meeting with Admiral Perry (Ted Danson) who makes sure they understand that they cannot use force to retrieve their crewmates, because it would send the wrong message to the Rigorites. Obviously, the crew is not happy with this order, but they decide to make another diplomatic trip to see the Prefect, hoping to reason with him. The Prefect has just announced the arrival of Gilliac and reminds his people that they must turn over any infants born under this sign to officials. People are doing this willingly; let that sink in.

Back in the camp, Bortis stops a hungry man from taking food from a pregnant woman. (This couple will be important to the story later in the show.) We learn that the couple fully believes they belong in this camp. This belief is so deeply rooted for these people, that they are willfully staying in the camp where they are treated like criminals, because of the sign they were born under.

Mercer and Talla try to reason with the Prefect again, but they are unsuccessful. Talla is obviously losing patience with his explanations and lashes out at him, dripping with sarcasm more than once. Ultimately, they return to the Orville empty handed, at which point Perry informs them that they have 24 hours to get back on mission. Leaving Kelly and Bortis behind is not going to happen, so we are treated to a brainstorming session in the conference room with the whole crew. I love this so much because of its Star Trek: The Next Generation feel. We know they are going to figure this out, but this scene is the obvious turning point. Once the meeting is concluded, there is this moment where the camera focuses on Talla, and it becomes obvious that she’s got the answer.

Before we get the answer from Talla, we go back to the camp with Kelly and Bortis, where Kelly is helping the pregnant woman deliver her baby. (In a previous scene, the First Prefect held a telecast to announce that they have successfully exited the sign of the Gilliac and have entered a more prosperous sign.) The fact that this baby was not born gilliac within a gilliac camp means that the woman either has to give it up or hide it. She decides to hide it, but the father is conflicted. Giving the baby up means a better life, even for this ridiculous reason. When the inspectors come in to the bunk to inspect, the father gives up the baby to them in a deeply emotional scene. Kelly and Bortis decide enough is enough and decide to overthrow the camp.

Back on the Orville, Talla is explaining that the Rigorian belief in astrological power is deeply rooted in the destruction of a star three thousand years ago. Her plan is to force them into rethinking their beliefs by putting a fake star back into the constellation where it had been. While they figure out how to pull it off, we are given a look at Kelly and Bortis’ progress at the camp. Bortis has stormed a watch tower and collected handguns and grenades, which is another modern-day parallel. They run around in a sequence that is reminiscent of A-Team, shooting and throwing grenades, but once they blow open the front gate, they are immediately overpowered and sentenced to death.

While this is going on, Malloy and J Lee are deploying the “Sun Sail” that will reflect the sun’s light and give off the appearance of a star. Amazingly (or maybe not so much), the “star” lights up the night sky at just the moment the executioner is about to pull the trigger on Kelly. One of the Rigorites yells out at the sky, and everything stops.

The First Prefect decides this new star ushers in a period of “Change,” though we don’t get to know what that means exactly. Kelly and Bortis, however, are now safe and sound back on the Orville and having a joint birthday party, despite Bortis’ need for his birthday to be “his” day. It is during this party that we see a moment between Talla and Mercer, where he commends her for her excellent work and, as a nod to their earlier conversation, tells her she can “punch him in the face anytime.”

I will admit, –I still miss Alara, but Talla just might be a good fit. I’ll give her a chance.

The Orville airs on Thursdays at 9 p.m. on Fox.

Review: ‘I Want to Eat Your Pancreas’

0

I need to make a confession. I am not the target demographic for the romantic drama anime I Want to Eat Your Pancreas. I am not a huge fan of anime, and I haven’t watched a lot of it. (The exceptions to that are One Punch Man, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Cowboy Bebop, as well as Sailor Moon when I was in middle school.) I am also not a huge fan of the romantic drama sub-genre of “beautiful young girls dying from a terminal illness and the boys who love them.” I have never felt comfortable with films that are that brazen in their attempt to manipulate my emotions. And I just do not really like crying. But I went in with an open mind, ready to cry and ready to possibly have my mind changed.

I Want to Eat Your Pancreas is based off of the popular award-winning novel by Yoru Sumino. It has also been adapted into a serialized manga and a live action film. The original subtitled version of this film was released in September of 2018, but I was able to attend the very first screening of the English-dubbed version, which is set to screen (courtesy of Aniplex) in select theatres on February 10th, 2019.

I Want to Eat Your Pancreas follows, through a series of flashbacks, an unnamed protagonist (voiced in the English dub by Robbie Daymond and listed in the credits as “Me,” though we learn his name at the very end… it becomes an important part of the plot so I won’t spoil it here) and his friendship with Sakura, a beautiful girl dying of a terminal illness they refer to as simply “pancreatic disease.” The young man is very stoic and often annoyed and overwhelmed by Sakura (voiced in the English dub by Erika Harlacher) and her bubbly personality. But after discovering her diary (which she has titled “Living with Dying”) and learning about her illness, he agrees to keep spending time with her, and during that time, their friendship grows deeper and deeper.

I’ll start with the good first. The animation and color are very beautiful. Everything is rendered in soft watercolors and pastels with a dominating theme of soft cherry pink surrounding Sakura, which is fitting because they make a point of explaining that Sakura means “Cherry Blossom.” The animation is lovely but not distracting, keeping the audience’s focus on the characters and their blossoming (pun intended) friendship.

There are also several laugh-out-loud moments throughout. Sakura is very frank and funny about her impending doom, but the funniest moment is when she stops an old woman from being mugged by kicking the mugger square in the balls. I also appreciated that their relationship (billed as romantic) takes some unexpected twists and turns, and never ends up quite where you think it will.

There are also some quite shocking moments of minor acts of violence that stand out sharply, because the colors and mood of the film are otherwise quite soft. This creates an uneasy undercurrent of tension that builds as these minor acts of violence escalate, ending in a surprise twist ending that no one will see coming. They also serve to add depth and complexity to the pastel colored world of our star-crossed pair, and in a way, remind me of the darkness present in the original versions of fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen, or the Brothers Grimm.

I also thought the pacing and use of flashbacks were very well done, and the movie moved at a slow but steady pace. It lets you luxuriate in the moments between the two friends, often panning out to a beautiful sunset or closing in on small details like her foot folded under her knee. You know Sakura does not have a lot of time left, yet it makes you feel like they have all the time in the world.

Now for the not so good. How about that title? Apparently Sumino came up with the title first and then created a story around it.

It refers to Sakura’s obsession with organ meats and the medieval tradition of eating the animal (or human) organ of the organ inside yourself that is sick or injured. It also becomes a metaphor for having someone else’s spirit living on inside of you. Unfortunately, as interesting as the idea is, it just makes for a weird and clunky title.

I also found both of the main characters extremely obnoxious. “Me” is extremely mopey and taciturn. When pushed by Sakura to explain why he refuses to make friends or talk to people, he says it is because he has a hobby of deciding that everyone thinks he is boring. So why should he make an effort? I was expecting a deeper explanation of his anxiety and closed-off emotional state to be revealed… Did he have a troubled home life? Was he bullied when he was young? What was the trauma that caused this?

But no — his home life and relationship with his mom seemed great. His reasons for not wanting friends are very superficial and brought to my mind disturbing comparisons to the growing number of “incels” online. I never understood why Sakura persisted in trying to be his friend. He was so negative.

Sakura, on the other hand, is what I would dub a “cancer pixie dream girl.” She is loud, EXTREMELY bubbly, quirky, and loves to eat. Over half of the items on her bucket list are her eating large amounts of food. Because isn’t it SO funny when pretty, thin, girls love to eat? Ok, sarcasm mode off.

I have another confession to make. Another reason I have a hard time with this type of film is because it is so often told from the male perspective, and the story becomes not about the girl who is dying, but about how she in fact helps him learn to live his life better — or in the case of this film specifically, how to make friends. The story is not about her, but about how she served to fix him and his problems.

Also, I have a chronic illness, so when I see illness depicted in media, especially when it involves sick female characters, I tend to get very skeptical. And sure enough, because this is a fictional “pancreatic disease,” they are able to play fast and loose with the rules of her condition. She is full of energy, has a huge appetite, and you are made aware of her illness, only because she is constantly telling him that she is.

There are only two moments where the gravity of her situation is depicted on screen: at one point, on vacation, Sakura asks him to look through her bag to find something, and he finds all of her medications, The other moment is near the end when she is hospitalized for two weeks. Even in the hospital though, she is running around, dancing, jumping, ESCAPING FROM SAID HOSPITAL, and depending on the frame, maybe she does or does not have an IV in her hand. (The IV was a big pet peeve for me. If you are hospitalized, that IV stays put, and you are basically stuck to a surgical pole until they remove it. Good luck sneaking out of a hospital with one of those dragging behind you.)

Ultimately, this story was technically executed very well, even though it was about two characters that I found extremely unlikable and irritating for opposite reasons. But hey, opposites attract right? If you are looking for beautiful imagery, a bittersweet love story that might make you cry, and you are not a crotchety, irritable, old coot like me, you will probably enjoy I Want to Eat Your Pancreas.

I Want to Eat Your Pancreas will have its North American theatrical release in select theatres on February 7th, 2019, and the English dub will have its release on February 10th, 2019.
