‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Season Six, Episode Four Recap: “Four Movements”

Before the start of season six, Chelsea Peretti, the actress who plays human-form-of-the-100-emoji Gina Linetti, announced she would be leaving soon into the season. This episode, entitled “Four Movements,” is her swan song.

Spoilers for season six, episode four of Brooklyn Nine-Nine ahead. You have been warned.

The episode is broken into four movements, each containing a special scene with certain characters and a “Signature Gina Moment” that she leaves them with. She starts with Captain Holt as they continue their symbiotic lessons – Holt teaches her chess while she teaches Holt how to trash talk. They play, and Holt continues to win, but also continues to try to convince Gina to stay, asking if she has considered the consequences. Gina says she wants to take risks, and asks if he ever wanted to be spontaneous. Holt says no, that he has had his entire life planned out since he was 10: going to the academy, becoming a detective, then sergeant, then lieutenant, then captain, then… commissioner. Or not. That brings Gina’s first Gina Moment: life is chaos, and confidence is everything. She then “wins” the chess game, because she is the true queen, and walks out of his office.

The second Gina Moment comes at “ladies lunch” with Amy and Rosa a few minutes later. Amy tells Gina she wants to be changed, to be more cool and detatched… and then takes out a thousand-page scrapbook of all of Gina’s tweets. Gina realizes this is the perfect opportunity, and tells Amy to burn it, burn that part of her. Amy refuses, and begins to cry because Gina (and her Gina scrapbook) mean too much to her. Gina comforts Amy, and shares her second moment: that Amy should be herself. That means crying, making scrapbooks, and caring, because that is what makes Amy, Amy. Amy cries more, and they turn to see Rosa bawling too. They all share an embrace – lady power, for the win.

Meanwhile, Jake is hard at work trying to secure a venue for Gina’s goodbye party – looking at mansions, The Met, and other extravagant locations because, as he explains to Terry, “it’s gotta be splashy.” They also need a celebrity guest, and Terry says he has a contact doing private security for Mario Lopez, aka Saved By The Bell‘s A.C. Slater. He says Lopez is hanging out at The Manhattan Club, and Gina and Jake go undercover to find him. The first stop is getting by the host, who turns out to be none other than Try Guys member and Youtube star Eugene Lee Yang! After threatening to call “Daddy,” he lets them upstairs. Jake allows himself to be tackled by the security guards upstairs so that Gina can talk to Lopez, but ultimately at the party (which ends up at their regular bar,) she sends him away. Jake is baffled, and Gina delivers her third Moment of the night: she does not need celebrities or a fancy venue to make it a perfect going away party, simply hanging out with her friends is enough. Oh, and she gets her own Gina Moment as well – getting to turn a celebrity away from her party!

Gina’s two weeks are up, and she has supposedly left the Nine-Nine… except she keeps finding reasons to stick around: explaining her “filing” system to Holt, cleaning out her desk, etc. It is not until Thursday that her real reason for procrastinating is revealed – the fourth movement. She had a giant gold statue made of herself to remain in the Nine-Nine forever. With the statue comes a prerecorded message, explaining her final moments. Charles gets the Boyle family starter sourdough, and Terry gets a subscription to an “International Yogurt of the Month” club.

Gina will surely be missed – both within the show and from the viewers. But her legacy shall live on in the hearts of the Nine-Nine forever.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine returns with “A Tale of Two Bandits” on Thursday, February 7 at 9/8c on NBC.

Review: ’30 Miles From Nowhere’ is Our New Favorite Thriller

0
Carrie Preston, Rob Benedict, Seana Kofoed and Cathy Shim

*This will be a spoiler-free review, so that you’re able to enjoy the film when it releases on March 5!

Recently we had the privilege of screening 30 Miles From Nowhere, a thriller from writer Seana Kofoed, producer Kelly Demaret and director Caitlin Koller.  We have been (im)patiently waiting for the film to release since the IndieGoGo campaign was launched in 2017.

The film tells the story of five friends (and one new girlfriend) who travel to the Wisconsin summer home they frequented together in their 20s, after the untimely death of their old college friend. When a storm moves in, effectively trapping them all in the woods and “30 miles from nowhere”, they “find themselves faced with the ultimate human dilemma, to kill or be killed, in
order to make it to morning.”

The film sets the tone early with an eerie, uneasy feeling which holds and only intensifies as the plot progresses.  It’s pretty much a non-stop rollercoaster from there. In the beginning, you’re slowly introduced to every character and really get a feel for who their character is, what their story is and how they’re brought together. You learn quickly who was who in their friend group – and get a good glimpse of their friendship and what has happened over the years. Pieces of the film start to unravel, and that’s a credit to the brilliant script by Kofoed. There’s bits of humor throughout, cutting some of the tension of the film, but when you’re least expecting it another unexpected part of the plot is revealed.

Carrie Preston

Along with the brilliant writing, comes a brilliant director, crew and cast. Caitlin Koller did a beautiful job setting up the look and the development of the relationships of the friends in the film; pulling out great performances of each cast member. The film was beautifully shot, showcasing the area around them and really making you feel like they’re in the middle of nowhere. The film also had great cuts of shots that make the film that much more entertaining and made you jump.

As for the cast, we were of course excited to see Rob Benedict in this film as Larry, as he’s one of our staff’s favorites. The role was incredibly different from the things we’ve seen him in before and he played to his character well. His comedic timing was great, and he really gave a stellar performance; you found little movements he did or facial expressions he made really add to his performance and it was well thought-out. It was so much fun to see him in a not-so-nice role, and really showed what a diverse actor he is. If you’re fans of Rob’s band Louden Swain, there is also an Easter Egg in the film that you will want to keep an ear out for.

Carrie Preston, as Sylvia, completely nailed her role. She made us uneasy the entire film, which is a credit to the writing, directing, and her performance. She played the character right on the edge of whether the audience could trust her or not.

Seana Kofoed was great as Elaine, and she seemed the most relatable of the bunch. She played the part well, and we give her (and Marielle Scott) even more credit for having cockroaches all over her (as you can see in the trailer!) yuck!

Marielle Scott and Seana Kofoed

Cathy Shim as Bess, William Smilie as Paul, Postell Pringle as Jack and Marielle Scott as Amber rounded out the cast, and we loved each one of their characters and performances. We loved how each character had a story, which was amplified by their performances. We loved that you got to see all of their relationships – from friends who knew each other years ago, to slowly beginning to develop relationships again and seeing all of them as they share in this experience.

It’s rare in films these days – especially horror – that you get such a well-rounded cast who absolutely nail the material and keep you so engaged in the film. One of the great things about this film is the diversity of the cast. They received a ReFrame Stamp which represents supporting Women in Film.

With gender-balance and diversity as one of its core missions, 30 MILES FROM NOWHERE had a female director, writer, and producing team, and a diverse and 50% female cast and crew.

They received this because of the racially diverse and gender balanced cast, which we can’t applaud them enough for.

Rob Benedict and William Smilie

30 Miles From Nowhere will keep you guessing until the very end, twist after twist, and it’s a breath of fresh air in a genre that is often far too predictable. The film was gripping until the very end and we found ourselves on the edge of our seats, asking, “What’s going to happen next?!” With many films in this genre, they’re sometimes predictable and you’re able to see the outcome of the film from a mile away. This is not the case with this film. The ending was a complete twist that left us blindsided and a more than a little blown away; it made us sit back and think, “Wow. Did that just happen?” It’s an ending that you will not see coming – and because of that, it’s one of our favorite thriller films in recent years.

30 Miles From Nowhere will be released on DVD and Digital on March 5. You can pre-order it here.

Video: Promo For Episode 300 of ‘Supernatural’

After over 13 years, Supernatural has finally reached the epic and impressive milestone of 300 episodes. The highly-anticipated 300th episode, “Lebanon”, was written by Andrew Dabb and Meredith Glynn, and directed by Robert Singer.

IMDb‘s official synopsis for the episode is:

Sam and Dean look to occult lore for a solution to their latest problem, but instead of a resolution, they find much more than either of them had anticipated.

Courtesy of The CW

In the promo, Sam and Dean discuss their ominous predicament: their current timeline is changing and converging with an alternate one, and they are at risk of being overwritten by a disturbingly different version of the Winchesters.

“Lebanon” is an important episode for a few reasons, because it also marks the return of John Winchester, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Morgan’s last (physical) appearance on Supernatural was in 2007, in the episode “All Hell Breaks Loose: Part 2“. Kurt Fuller will be appearing as well, reprising his role as the angel Zachariah.

The 300th episode of Supernatural will air Feb 7 at 8/7c on the CW.

Deadline has reported that the Matt Reeves film The Batman will be released on June 25, 2021. But possibly eclipsing that news is the fact that Ben Affleck will no longer portray the iconic superhero.

This iteration of the Caped Crusader’s story will focus on a younger Bruce Wayne. So the role of the Dark Knight is currently vacant, and the search for a new Batman is on.

Affleck tweeted out excitement and support for the upcoming film yesterday.

Written and directed by Reeves, The Batman will be produced by Reeves and Dylan Clark.
