‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Season 6 Episode 12 Recap: “Casecation”

Oh boy, Nine-niners. This week’s episode was a real “bowel twister!’

It begins with Jake calling Amy to the hospital for help with a case. A cartel boss named Bruno Rojas was shot through the nipple (“nature’s bullseye” – Amy) by his lieutenant and is now in a coma and under Jake’s supervision. He has called Amy in so that they can have a “casecation” and spend some time together to celebrate their one year anniversary while still at work. Amy calls Holt who agrees that Jake could “use some oversight” and the “casecation” is a go!

Jake opens the door to Rojas’ room to reveal a romantic (and French themed) cheese and bread presented by Boyle in a fancy maitre’d costume. Of course, when he asks Boyle to leave, Boyle becomes extremely upset that he will not be included (“Fine. Enjoy your WEIRD anniversary with JUST the couple. Selfish jerks.”) and storms out. They dine on a “budget conscious selection of local cheddar” while they list off their top five moments of marriage as if it were an “NBA Inside Highlights Reel”. Their top moments include: accidentally wearing each other’s contact lenses for a day, stomping a group of kids at laser tag, the time they shared an Uber Pool with Michael Caine (definitely not Michael Caine), and the time that Jake put socks on Amy’s feet while she was sleeping so that they didn’t get cold. But before they can list number one, they are interrupted by an elderly patient who had been eavesdropping on their conversation, Pam (played by Shrill’s Julia Sweeney).

She bursts in proclaiming their cuteness and insists that she just had to meet them. She is in the hospital because she suffers from a case of “twisted bowels.” She asks them if they have kids yet while shrouding it in some good old fashioned old lady racism (“Mixed race babies are always SO adorable!”) This causes friction between Jake and Amy when Amy responds that they don’t but they are going to start trying soon. It turns out that the couple never really discussed having kids before getting married (well, Amy thought they did and Jake thought that conversation was about a water park, because it’s Jake.) Which leaves them in a tough situation because Amy definitely wants children and Jake doesn’t. Amy insists that they settle this problem by engaging in structured debate (“High school format. Modified Lincoln-Douglas.” – My former debate kid self died at this joke and all of the following debate jokes.) moderated by Captain Holt.

They each take an hour to prep their arguments. Amy returns with stacks of files and Jake returns with his feelings scribbled down on a piece of paper. It does not go well. Holt gives most of the points to Amy and Jake insults structured debate (to the horror of Amy, Holt, and via phone backup moderators Kevin and Gayle, the Debate Club Vice President). Jake confesses that the real reason he doesn’t want children is because of his own experience being raised by a terrible father. He ended up with extreme “daddy issues” and now he is terrified that he might mess up and cause similar problems for any children he brings in to the world. He tells her that he doesn’t want to have a baby unless he’s one hundred percent sure that he’s ready to take care of it.

Holt leaves, and Amy and Jake have a sincere but painful discussion about the future. He insists that he just needs more time to think about it. She counters by telling him that she can’t wait around for two years for him to decide he doesn’t because that means she will have to start over and she doesn’t want to start to try and have kids at 38 because that will be too late for her. (“Women don’t have the luxury of waiting till we’re 60 and then changing our minds and having a baby with some dumb 28 year old.”) She needs to know if he is in or out now. Jake is stunned that this might mean the end of their marriage. Of course, at this moment, Terry and Rosa burst in singing the “casecation” song and interrupting the fight. They came to inform Jake and Amy that there has been chatter in their informant network that the lieutenant that tried to take out Rojas is sending someone to finish the job. Amy leaves with Rosa to lock down the nurses’ station while Terry and Jake stay to guard the room.

Rosa sides with Amy, claiming that while she never wants kids she thinks that Amy should have them. (“You should absolutely have them. They’re so cute it’s f*cked up.”) She offers to bully Jake into agreeing with Amy, but Amy declines saying that she thinks leaving Jake alone with Terry will solve her problem. Unfortunately for her, at that moment Terry is telling Jake not to have kids. He starts telling Jake horror stories about his daughters (“I still haven’t finished Breaking Bad but I can recite Moana from memory!”) and saying that while he loves them dearly, they are also a lot of stress and responsibility. He stresses that Jake should not have kids unless he is absolutely one hundred percent sure that he wants them and can handle the pressure.

While Amy and Rosa are talking they spot a man trying to sneak past security so they run and tackle him, finding a picture of Rojas but strangely, no weapon. Terry and Jake run to meet them but Jake realizes that this is a distraction and sprints back to the room. In the room he finds Pam standing next to the comatose Rojas and holding a pipe bomb. Jake sends Terry to evacuate the hospital and call for backup. Pam confesses that a handsome man (“Antonio Banderas could play him in a movie! What is Banderas doing now a days, I know, he should be on Outlander!”) convinced her to detonate the bomb in exchange for enough money to take care of her son Bobby (and his daughter) for the rest of his life. After a second “structured debate” and a lot of nervous chatter from Pam, Jake convinces her (with the promise of arts and crafts in prison) to hand over the bomb and turn herself in.

Later, having narrowly avoided being blown up, Amy and Jake reconcile. He tells her that he has changed his mind and even though he is still scared, he does want to have kids with her. They agree to take next week off of work so that they can take a real vacation, at the water park.

‘The Orville’ Season 2 Episode 12 Recap: “The Sanctuary”

0

This week’s Orville was all about girl power, and it was a long time coming. One of the things that this show does so well is take a well known sci fi show trope and spin it on it’s head to provide social commentary on a current issue. Another thing that it does well? Gives us Trekkies little Easter eggs along the way. This week’s episode was wonderfully directed by Number One himself, Jonathan Frakes. Without any further delay, let’s dive right in to “Sanctuary”.

Spoilers ahead!

The Orville is asked to deliver a Moclan scientist (and his mate) to the Neccar system where they will rendezvous with another ship. Upon arrival, Talla shows Korick and Toren to their quarters, where they quickly check the room (which isn’t at all suspicious, guys). They are clearly smuggling something, as they reveal when they open their rather large luggage, but we’re left guessing the contents as the beginning credits roll.

In class, Bortis’ son Topa refuses to share his toys with his female classmate, claiming that his father says he does not need to respect women and ending with him shoving her. The teacher runs over to gather the girl child into her arms, and the true Trekkie in me actually shouted with joy as I saw that she was played by none other than Deanna Troy herself, Marina Sirtis. She pulls Bortis and his husband into her office to discuss Topa’s behavior, and while Bortis is obviously embarrassed and apologetic, Klyden frankly is not. Indeed, when they get back to their quarters, the parents openly disagree about the level of punishment their son should receive.

Before they can finish their argument, Bortis receives a message from Commander Grayson that Korick and Toren are using too much power in their quarters, and he needs to investigate. They invite him in when he shows up, but with extreme amounts of caution. Bortis demands to see what’s in the luggage and low and behold, it’s a Moclan child – a girl.

If you didn’t catch the season 1 episode “About a Girl”, the Moclan race is composed entirely of males. That is not to say that females aren’t occasionally born, but they are “reassigned” gender at birth. Bortis and Klyden’s child Topa was such a baby, born a girl. Ultimately, through a tough legal battle, Bortis relents to his husband’s wishes (and Moclan law) and allows them to change Topa to be a boy.

Korick and Toren are familiar with this trial, and to some extent, trust that Bortis will be sympathetic to their efforts. They are not on a scientific mission, they’re actually fleeing Moclan and seeking refuge with their daughter on another planet. They have obviously put Bortis in one hell of a sticky position, but he agrees to keep their secret for the duration of their journey. He does however, show the secret to one individual – Topa, whom he brings around to try to erase some of the prejudice that Klyden has instilled. He explains to his son that sometimes Moclan’s are born female, and while some people fear them, she’s not so different than he is.

The two Moclan leave with their secret in tact, but shortly after Bortis is called into Ed’s office. Turns out Topa did talk, but only to Klyden, who of course felt the need to tattle. (Side note, I’m about done with Klyden. Bortis deserves better!) Ed and Kelly are of course sympathetic to his reasons, but their primary concern is that none of them verified that Korick and Toren were the babies actual parents, and she might have been kidnapped. They need to track them down to verify their story, and fast. But strangely, the vessel they boarded has disappeared, nearly without a trace. Gordon remembers a clever trick from his party days, and they’re able to track down the masked ion signature. The vessel though is not headed to Ritepsia as they said, but instead into a hidden star system and inside of it? Three planets, one inhabitable with thousands of life signs, all Moclan.

Ed, Kelly, Bortis and Talla take a shuttle to the planet’s surface and discover the Moclans are all women. Naturally they’re met with hostility until they are taken to the leader – Heveena. She had attempted to help during Bortis’ trial, and here again, is leading the quiet revolution. It seems she’s cobbled together a small network of ships (the allusions to the Underground Railroad are loud and clear here) which serves to get female Moclans and their families to this planet. In all, there are 6,000 Moclans in hiding. While initially she wants to evacuate the planet, Ed convinces her to let him petition to turn their colony into a sovereign state, therefore free of Moclan rule and under the protection of the union of planets. She agrees, with one caveat – that she be allowed to go and speak.

Ed and Heveena’s trip to Earth is a pleasant one, where they talk about the freedom women from Earth have had for centuries to create art, careers, and control their own destinies. Ed allows her to search through the shuttles archives and she is quick to find what she declares to be the female Moclan revolutionary battle song (“9 to 5” by Dolly Parton.) Ed makes an attempt to tell her that’s not exactly the intention of the song, but Heveena won’t be convinced and after all – it is one hell of a battle cry!

When they arrive on Earth, Heveena is allowed to speak, much to the protest of the (male) representatives from Moclus. Her impassioned speech sorta took my breath away, to be honest, especially in how applicable it is to our modern times. “The history of moral progress can be measured by the expansion of fundamental rights to those who have been denied them. We ask only to be included in that expanding circle of justice,” she says, while the rest of the representatives look on and nod. She concludes her speech by quoting the “famous Earth poet” (as Ed groans) by saying, “Working 9 to 5, for service and devotion. You would think that I would deserve a fair promotion! Want to move ahead, but the boss won’t seem to let me. I swear sometimes that man is out to get me!”

Back on the Orville, Kelly and crew are standing guard when a Moclan battleship arrives, claiming they are only there to wait (as they are) for the verdict, presumably so they can quickly invade the planet and take the women back to Moclus for gender reassignment surgery. They go to yellow alert, and stand by for news.

The representatives from Moclus however, are unmoved by Heveena’s speech and declare that if this colony is granted sovereignty, they will renounce their membership to the union. An empty threat before, perhaps, but now that there is the threat of the Kaylon attacking coupled with the fact that Moclus supplies all of the unions weaponry, there are other matters to consider. Ed tries to convince his admiral superiors (a truly impressive cast group, by the way, which includes veteran actors Victor Garber, Ted Danson, Ron Canada and Kelly Hu) that while he’s the first to defend the prime directive (to use a Trekkie term), this is about the rights of the individual. And if they place weaponry over those rights, then what exactly does the union stand for?

While the Orville lays in wait, Bortis and Kelly share a drink. Klyden approaches their table to try and convince Bortis to begin to prepare to leave the ship – after all, if Moclus leaves the union, then in his mind their time on the Orville is over. Bortis balks at this idea, saying that he has no intention of going back to Moclus and further criticizes his husband’s old world views on women, even going so far as to be angry that he didn’t acknowledge Kelly’s presence at the table when he approached. It doesn’t end well for them, and honestly, I’m really feeling at this point Bortis deserves SO much better. (Although yes, I remember the rules of their divorce, and I genuinely don’t want him to have to kill his husband!)

While the council has been deliberating, the Moclans have decided they have had enough. They tell their battleship to send troops to the planet. The Orville reaches out to Ed, but the official orders are to stand down and await the councils decision. But unofficially? “Go work on your tan,” Ed says. Bortis insists on joining Kelly despite the fact that he will have to fire on his own people and indeed when they reach the planet, it’s utter chaos. (All set to the “9 to 5” soundtrack, which only got more awesome as you watched the female Moclans defend the hell out of their refuge.)

Back on Earth they struggle to come to a decision regarding the sovereignty, but Ed offers a great point. If they do leave the union, their only ally would be the Krill, and they couldn’t take on the Kaylon threat themselves. But the tiny female refugee planet would likely stay under the radar so in the end, even if all of the male dominated Moclus was destroyed, at least they would retain their single gendered tradition, only with females. This point convinces them to a compromise – the refuge isn’t granted sovereignty, and agrees to stop their underground network. In exchange, Moclus is to leave it alone entirely. It’s a tentative agreement, but it stops the fighting.

Ed, Kelly, and Bortis drop Haveena off at the refugee planet, but it’s a somber goodbye. In their eyes, they failed these women, but Haveena sees it differently. This was just the first step in ending the struggle, and it will have inspired someone out there to take a second. After all, that’s how revolutions are won – one small victory at a time. As they leave, Haveena turns to Ed with one last question. “Captain,” she says, “Do you suppose Dolly Parton would be proud of us?” He smiles at her. “Oh yeah.”

The Orville airs Thursdays at 9 on Fox.

WonderCon Interview: Troy Baker and Cas Anvar on ‘Batman Vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ [EXCLUSIVE]

The crossover event uniting Batman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Gotham City premiered at WonderCon in Anaheim to positive reviews.  This full length animated movie was inspired by the success of the comic miniseries that debuted in 2016.  It features Troy Baker playing both Batman and the Joker, which is a first for a single production.

Nerds and Beyond attended the press round table at Wondercon with Troy Baker (Batman, Joker) and Cas Anvar (Ra’s al Ghul). Baker is a prolific and acclaimed voice actor of video games and animated television and movies. Anvar is an actor, voice actor, and writer, currently appearing as Alex Kamal on the beloved Amazon Prime scifi series The Expanse.

Baker and Anvar took questions and interviewed each other in a friendly session where they talked about how Batman blends with TMNT.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity. To see the full video, including Baker’s impromptu De Niro and Pacino impressions and the debate over the pronunciation of R’as al Ghul, watch it on the Nerds and Beyond Youtube channel.

Q. How trippy is it to voice both Batman and Joker in the same movie?

Baker: Come on, that sentence right there is trippy enough…I always feel like they’re going to recast me. Like this is glorified scratch track and they’re going to be like ‘Ah we tried it with Troy. And then you start realizing, oh I’m being an arrogant pompous ass thinking that my performance can bring down something as awesome as Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It’s a good concept, you know?

And the first time I watched that Shredder fight, I was like that is exactly what I want to see with comic books…we can’t really talk about this but Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was the first hero movie where I was like ‘that’s a comic book come to life’, and that Shredder fight in the beginning, I could see it as the panels just like popping out into life.

(Baker turns to Anvar)

And you’re one of my favorite characters dude.

Anvar: I’ve been loving this character for decades. Ever since Batman Begins, ever since Liam Neeson kicks this guy’s ass I was in love with this character. I’ve been collecting comics since I was a kid and just the idea of a character that is centuries old, that has all this experience, all this knowledge from the masses of humanity, like a vampire. He’s been living year after year after year watching empires rise and fall, that’s an incredible character to be able to portray–someone who is so methodical and so focused on one mission and he’s not necessarily wrong-

Baker: No.

Anvar: Batman and him are not necessarily going for different things. It’s just Ra’s is willing to do whatever it takes. The other comic book company has a similar dichotomy between Professor X and Magneto.

Baker: The other comic book company (laughs). That which shall not be named at this particular table. I’ve always looked at Batman and Ra’s al Ghul as Holmes and Moriarty. We just happen to be on opposite sides of this but it’s like that scene in heat where Pacino and De Niro sit down across from each other–

Anvar: I love that scene. We could do this because we’re really on the same side, you just happen to have a badge and I don’t.

Baker: That’s a great scene.

Anvar: Great scene.

Q. When you were doing Batman and the Joker, did you do them separately or did you talk to yourself?

Baker: I mean you’re gonna see in the movie how that plays out, but…a writer sits down and they’re like, this is how I see this whole thing playing out. I believe my job is to meet them where they’re at, as opposed to them having to adjust themselves to what I feel comfortable with. Look, I can control the tea and I can control the temperature of the room, but ultimately, that script is bigger than all of us. So I like to do it as they’ve laid it out. Even if a lot of times it’s like ‘so we’ve got this big fight at the very beginning’, let’s go, let’s do it, let’s get into it. And there are two fights in the beginning (of Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) so I kinda bit off a little bit more than I could chew. But to me that feels more true to the performance. If Batman is exhausted after a fight, then let’s not fake being exhausted… I sweat. I’ve watched Mark (Hamill) do Joker before and it’s just effortless, it’s not fair. He’s too good at it. And whenever I do Joker I literally (wheezes). I left that session like, I don’t know if I can talk for a while. I don’t think I’ll ever be the same again. And you leave and you’re sweating and ..

Anvar: I know what you’re talking about. Ra’s doesn’t exert a lot effort in his fights because he’s just a bad ass ninja but I’ve done plenty of voice sessions where at the end you’re sweating, and you’re actually sore from the imaginary blows you’ve received. In real life do you talk to yourself?

Baker: Dude. This is what’s so funny. Gary and Mariana are the ones that dreamt up this stupid idea that put me as two character in one movie and they did it because they know that I do this when cameras aren’t rolling and no mics are in play. This is what we do as actors. We are crazy people, walking around with these crazy characters in our heads. We’re just waiting for someone to give us an opportunity just to get them out just to give us the proper catharsis so we can have this shared experience.

Q. Does Ra’s al Ghul see Shredder as a worthy enemy that he can maybe pass the mantle to?

Anvar: Shredder??! You’re talking about a man that has been alive for centuries. This man does not suffer fools. And Shredder can get things done in his own way, but Ra’s likes be in charge and he likes the people to be at least mentally stable.  I don’t know if Ra’s would view Shredder as particularly competent. Once he can handle amphibians, then maybe.

Q. What is Ras’s relationship with his grandson in this movie?

Anvar: That’s a good question. I don’t think that’s actually broached in this movie. He’s got big things to do, Ra’s has a lot on his plate. This movie is really an homage to the fans. The creators, the writer, the director, the producers, are all huge fans and geeks and nerds themselves, and what they’ve tried to do with this project, in addition to just telling an amazing and fun story, is to give the fans of both franchises something to really sink their teeth into, also to bring some nudges and nods to the histories of both DC and the TMNT fandom. Also, Batman and Ra’s is a very dark part of a comic book franchise, and the Turtles, I mean it’s a completely different tone. So we’re blending these two tones and they manage to do it really brilliantly. So you’re going to get to see a lot of tongue in cheek, dark humor …that you might not have normally seen. Because we have to deal with these turtles.

Baker: What surprised me is how you could have this super super dark moment, and then it feels completely endemic to the franchise for Michelangelo to just say something stupid and off the cuff.  We’re blending tones and we’re crossing lines…It’s in the title, it’s Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It feels kinda like a fever dream, so you buy into the craziness from the very beginning. But it does manage to have that ‘I believe this as a Batman story, and I also believe it as a turtle story.’

See Baker and Anvar battle it out in Batman Vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on digital May 14 and on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack and Blu-ray Combo Pack on June 4.

Interview: Sedona Talks Music, Performing, and More [EXCLUSIVE]

0
“Bottom Of Your Bottle” music video still. Image courtesy of Sedona.

Sedona is a singer, songwriter, and student. She has now released two singles and has an EP in the works. Sedona talked to us at Nerds and Beyond about her musical background, inspiration for her songs, and hearing herself on the radio for the first time.

Nerds and Beyond: Sedona, when did you become interested in music?

Sedona: I’ve been interested in music my whole life. I grew up going to concerts with my parents and have always been drawn to musical instruments from a really young age. By the time I was 16 I had already seen over 100 live concerts and could play 5 different instruments. I feel very lucky to have been immersed in the art my whole life.

Nerds and Beyond: How would you describe your style?

Sedona: I’m still sort of figuring that out. I guess I would describe my style as pop, rock, indie and/or folk, or I think “singer-songwriter” is a genre? I really am trying to figure out what genre “Sedona” is; I think it has changed a lot since I first started writing music and continues to change [with] every song I write. You will hear that my first two singles, “Bottom of Your Bottle” and “Let You Go,” are very different styles. But overall I think my ability to write different styles is a part of who I am as an artist.

Nerds and Beyond: Is there a way you generally write your songs (like lyrics first, etc.)?

Sedona: For me, there isn’t one way a song comes about. My notes on my phone are flooded with random ideas and thoughts, so sometimes I’ll start there. But other times I will just be playing my guitar and a melody will come to mind or a chord progression and I go from there. I think the process is always different but every song initially starts with something that inspires me or a personal experience. I find great importance of writing about real experiences that people can relate to.

Nerds and Beyond: You can play guitar. Are there any other instruments that you play, and are there any you’d like to learn?

Sedona: When I was younger, I taught myself how to play multiple different instruments. It started off with the drums and clarinet, and played those instruments throughout my middle and high school years. And when I broke my leg when I was 14, I was super bored sitting around, so I decided to teach myself how to play guitar, piano, and ukulele. That’s pretty much when I started writing my own songs. I would really love to learn how to play the mandolin or harmonica. I think those instruments are super cool.

Nerds and Beyond: What was it like to hear yourself on the radio for the first time?

Sedona: I guess it was simply unreal and very unexpected. It felt so crazy to see my name on the screen in my mom’s car… I kept saying, “Oh my gosh!! That’s ME!!” I didn’t expect my first release ever to be on the radio, but it was so awesome to see my hard work getting recognition. My songs are like my children to me, so I am very proud of “Bottom of Your Bottle” being heard nationwide. Makes me wanna cry just thinking about it.

Nerds and Beyond: So you’ve released a single “Bottom of Your Bottle” recently, and “Let You Go” today. Where did the inspirations come for those?

Sedona: Both of these singles are about personal experiences and were written in a time I was overcome with emotion. “Bottom of Your Bottle” was about an ex who drunk-called me and told me he missed me. I was so over him and over that relationship and had way moved on past it, but he obviously wasn’t moved on. I am not the type of person to just crawl right back to someone when they want me back, and I think I felt this song was almost about women empowerment and the whole idea of being an “independent woman that don’t need no man.” Overall I think it is a super fun, catchy song that people can relate to in different ways.

My newest single, “Let You Go,” comes from a more sad time in my life.  When I wrote it, I had just moved to college and I was losing a bunch of some really good friends from home. This song was about one of my closest friends. It hurt because I was very sad about having to be far away, but it seemed as if they were thriving and were making new friends and forgetting about me. There was a point where I met up with them, and they were a totally different person than the person I knew. It was heartbreaking. So that’s when I wrote “Let You Go.” Writing this song and how I felt was the emotional release I needed. I also think a bunch of people can relate to this song and the feeling of losing someone very important in your life.

Nerds and Beyond: You’ve sung on stage with Train. Has that changed the way you approach performances?

Sedona: I feel incredibly lucky that I’ve gotten to watch many amazing artists perform such as Train. By watching how bands interact with the crowd or how they act on stage is how I’ve learned what to do on stage. So as much as I’ve pretended in my room that I’m on a huge stage, nothing compares to the complete rush that you get when you’re on stage in front of thousands of people. That rush is something I’ve gotten to experience thanks to the band Train. I’ve been lucky to get to sing a few times with them and I honestly really just act like I know what I am doing and it seems to be well received in the audience. There are many artists with great stage presence, but one of my favorites is Matt Nathanson. He is just hilarious and confident on stage, he doesn’t take himself too seriously, and I strive to be like that.

Nerds and Beyond: What is one thing you want our readers to know about you?

Sedona: One thing you should know about me is that I am historically known to be a completely shy and reserved person. I still hate having to order at restaurants, and talking in front of a classroom full of kids is one of my worst nightmares. However, when I found my passion, which is singing and sharing my music with others, I somehow turned into a whole different person. Even Pat Monahan [lead singer of Train] has pointed out how different of a person I am on stage. When I am on stage I am outgoing, confident and fearless. I want to show other people that are shy or quiet that it is possible to break out of your shell. Even if you don’t think you can do it, you can. Find the thing that makes you feel most confident and keep doing it and doing it. When I found my confidence through being on stage, I found my passion and ultimately found my happy place.

You can purchase Sedona’s newest single on iTunes or stream it on Spotify. I also highly recommend listening to “Bottom of Your Bottle” — it has quickly become a personal favorite. Be sure to watch for EP titled “Middle of the Night” coming out later this spring!

You can also catch Sedona on Train’s cruise “Sail Across the Sun” February 14-18, 2020.

Many children make up, or begin to make up, imaginary languages. I have been at it since I could write.

-J.R.R. Tolkien

Based on the life of the legendary author J.R.R. Tolkien, who brought us The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien explores the early years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. It will be these younger years that will inspire him to write some of the most well-known classic fantasy novels of our time.

Starring Nicholas Hoult as the titular character and Lily Collins as Edith Bratt, Tolkien will be in theaters May 10.
