Nerds Gets Cheery: Travel from the North Pole with ‘Elf’

Welcome to the seventh installment of our Nerds Gets Cheery series! During the month of December, we will be recommending some of our holiday favorites to help spread the spirit of the holiday season. And nothing spreads Christmas cheer more than the movie Elf.

Elf was an instant classic for me when it was first released back in 2003. Will Ferrell brings a heartwarming and humorous take on what the holiday spirit truly means. Furthermore, it is fun for the entire family. Folks of any age can find delight in this sweet holiday tale.

The quirkiness of being “out of place” is what truly brings the element of humor to the movie. As a baby, Buddy (Ferrell) found his way into Santa’s bag on Christmas night in an orphanage. The majority of his life was then spent on the North Pole as an elf — a very giant elf, that is. Knowing he does not fit in, Buddy travels to New York in search of his father (James Caan). It, as you can imagine, does not go as planned.

His half-brother gets a kick out of his eccentricities, and they bond over things like burping very loud. “Did you hear that?” His stepmother is very sweet to him and makes sure Buddy is well taken care of. His father, though, is hesitant. You see, he is the only one who does not seem to have the Christmas spirit, and that in turn affects how he spends time with his family.

Beyond epic Etch-A-Sketches, massive decorating, and pouring maple syrup over everything (including spaghetti, yuck!), Buddy meets a department store elf played by Zooey Deschanel. Buddy is smitten with her singing, even if she is a bit shy about it. As buddy says, “the best way to spread Christmas cheer, is singing loud for all to hear.” The pair end up spending more and more time together, teaching each other along the way.

There are quite a few memorable moments, but one of my favorites is when Buddy discovers department store Santas. With news that Santa is arriving, Buddy is of course excited to see him. After screaming like a kid getting a pony on Christmas morning, he says to his new boss, “I know him, I know him!” When Santa arrives, Buddy joins the kids in jumping up and down, but the excitement does not last.

Buddy right away can tell the man in the Santa suit is not the real Santa. Buddy tries to trick him by asking him what song he sang on his birthday last year. Obvious answer, “Happy Birthday.” He whispers his anger to the department store Santa, including the memorable line, “You sit on a throne of lies.” It goes further downhill as Buddy de-beards him, resulting in “Santa” tackling him while all the kids scream. It is a complete disaster, but utterly hilarious!

What I truly love is the message, though. Singing may spread the Christmas cheer, but it is really about being around your loved ones and making time for those you care about. Family and friends help make the season bright, and help ease all the stress of the holidays. The laughter, the singing, the storytelling… it all helps keep the magic alive beyond our childhood years believing.

So, grab some hot chocolate, turn the Christmas lights on, snuggle in with your loved ones and hit play on Elf. I promise it will bring you as much joy as it brings me!

‘The Boys’ Season 2 Promises to Be a Bloody Diabolical Ride

The premiere season of Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys dropped this past summer, and this live-action adaption of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic book series was an absolute hit. However, with Timeless and Supernatural‘s Eric Kripke at the helm, joined by the likes of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the show was bound to be a success.

The Boys follows a wayward group of vigilantes with one collective mission: take down the corrupt superheroes that the world has been fooled into loving. Season one was hilarious, obnoxious, and downright bloody — this show absolutely isn’t afraid to push the limits … in any direction.

The cast and crew have been hyping up season two to be even bloodier and epic than the first. Production recently wrapped, and now we have a trailer to see just what we’re in store for.

The trailer flips through various clips of the Boys and a handful of those naughty Supes. A-Train seems to be alive (though maybe not “and well”), and Homelander may or may not be taking a break from wreaking havoc to have some twisted bonding time with his “son.” And don’t blink, because it looks like Billy Butcher’s bulldog Terror will finally be making an appearance as well!

The trailer closes on a scene of Butcher sipping a cup of tea, which is fitting, to say the least. The jury is still out on what fantastic new pieces we can expect from his wardrobe this season, especially after all of the Boys’ homes were compromised, so we can only hope that he made a pit stop at the mall before heading back out to kill some Supes.

Showrunner Eric Kripke previously confirmed that season two of The Boys will arrive exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in Summer 2020. While you’re waiting, take a walk down season one memory lane with Billy Butcher’s most diabolical one-liners and his untouchable shirt collection.

Tell Me A Story is now officially available for streaming exclusively on CBS All Access for members.

The show, created by Kevin Williamson, reimagines fairy tales as twisted and dark psychological thrillers. This season’s focus is on such classics tales as Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty.

The show will also feature the Pruitt family, Rebecca (Carrie-Anne Moss) and her three children, Ashley (Natalie Alyn Lind), Maddie (Odette Annable) and Jackson (Matt Lauria).

Thursday welcomed the release of Disney’s much anticipated live action version of the cherished 90’s classic Mulan.

The script was written by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa. The director, Niki Caro, is known for previous works such as The Zookeepers Wife. Following the release of the poster on Wednesday, Mulan, tells the tale of  an eldest daughter taking her ill father’s place in the family to fight a war in China by decree of the emperor… however she cannot show her true identity while doing so.

The animated classic is well known, while the live action remake has faced controversy over the last several years, including whether to make this version a musical or not. The trailer teases a promise as instrumentation of “Reflection” from the original film, that she is Hua Mulan, and she will bring honor to them all.

Mulan herself is played by Yifei Li, and other stars of the film include Jason Scott Lee (Khan), Jet Li (The Emperor), and Li Gong (Xian).

9 Reasons Why Kylo Ren is Actually a Disney Prince

0

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set to release in a few weeks and is anticipated to be one of the biggest movies of the decade. It’s the end of the saga, following behind The Last Jedi‘s release in 2017. While we all love characters in the new saga such as Rey, Finn, Poe, Rose and BB-8, there’s one character we especially love: Kylo Ren.

The conflicted, tantrum-throwing Kylo is now the Supreme Leader of the First Order, and since Disney owns Lucasfilm, we’re going to bring you 9 reasons why Kylo Ren is a true Disney Prince.

His Mom Is Royalty

Courtesy of Star Wars/Lucasfilm

Kylo Ren, also known as Ben Solo, was born to Princess Leia Organa and Han Solo. Princess Leia is the princess of the planet Alderaan, so, his mom is actual royalty. That makes him at least have the title of a Prince.

His Prince-Like Hair

His swooping locks, which freely blow in the wind like some sort of hair commercial, make him a shoe-in for a Disney Prince. After all, they all have great hair, and Kylo’s no exception.

Family Problems

Courtesy of Star Wars/Lucasfilm

Disney Princes and Princesses all seem to have some sort of family problems, and Kylo is no exception. Remember The Force Awakens? It’s safe to say Kylo has more than his fair share.

Girl Problems

Courtesy of Star Wars/Lucasfilm

Disney Princes often have girl problems — and we can count Kylo as having one as well. In The Last Jedi after defeating Snoke, Kylo asks Rey to join him and says that they can rule together, and she rejects him. With their Force connection, there’s much more in store for these two.

He’s Got A Cool Weapon

Courtesy of Star Wars/Lucasfilm

It’s no sword, but he’s got a cool-looking lightsaber that resembles one. All Disney Princes wield impressive weapons, so it’s just more evidence he’s a Disney Prince.

He Sticks Up For What He Believes In

Courtesy of Star Wars/Lucasfilm

What he believes in might be the Dark Side, but at least he sticks up for it.

Cool Slide

Courtesy of Star Wars/Lucasfilm

He can do a cool slide … that should count, right?

Shirtless for No Reason

Courtesy of Star Wars/Lucasfilm

In The Last Jedi, he appears shirtless in a Force connection with Rey. What more could you ask for in a Disney Prince then to just appear shirtless at random times?

He’s Tall and Attractive

He’s tall, brooding, attractive, and played by Adam Driver. I think that’s enough evidence.

Seems like a visit back to Port Charles is in order for Dr. Griffin Munro. According to Soap Opera Digest, Matt Cohen will be returning to General Hospital for a visit and will be back on-screen next week.

Cohen previously left the show back in March, but left a chance open to return. Cohen’s been busy since then; this year alone, he had His Secret Marriage premiere on Lifetime, Holiday Date comes out on December 14, he’s a full-time correspondent for Entertainment Tonight, and he’s also directing an upcoming episode of Supernatural.

If you missed it, you can see our interview with Matt from the Supernatural Jacksonville Convention on November 21 here.
