Recap: The Super Family Takes Flight in ‘Superman & Lois’ Season 1, Episode 1 “Pilot”

The first episode of The CW’s highly anticipated and newest CWverse show, Superman & Lois, has finally aired and it packed a punch! The Kents have moved their family back to Smallville and the Super Sons find out that their father is in fact a real-life superhero, and not just any superhero — Superman. Read on to find out what happened in the premiere episode, “Pilot.”

The episode starts with a retrospective of Clark’s life — from his first moments on Earth after having to leave Krypton, it walks through early Superman and shows a completely smitten Clark when he meets Lois at the Daily Planet. From there, it walks through their engagement and marriage, buying their first home and having their twin boys, Jonathan (Jordan Elsass) and Jordan (Alex Garfin). As one would expect with any crime-fighting hero, within minutes of the episode beginning we see Superman saving the day! He responds to a report from General Lane (Dylan Walsh) who has arrived at yet another nuclear plant. In response with an assist of his powers, he quickly sees that there is a giant man-made crack in the cooling tower. After patching things up, Sam tells Clark that he’s put in a lot of overtime, and asks if Lois is okay with that. He follows up that he’d like to take the boys fishing. Clark says he will talk to Lois about dates.

The CW

Clark returns home and is greeted by Lois, who is on the phone. He checks on the boys and learns that Jonathan has news to tell him; he is starting quarterback on Varsity! When he goes to check on Jordan — appropriately playing Injustice 2 — Clark says he makes a good Superman and Jordan says, “Superman is boring.” Clark brushes it off and apologizes for missing therapy. He then sees he missed a call from his mom, and when he calls her back she says he needs to be around his family more. She reiterates that they are a bigger responsibility and he’s a father. Clark says he has a duty to the public to protect them also and that he doesn’t want to let anyone down.

The next morning, Clark is in the kitchen making breakfast for the family. The boys are bickering and Lois sends them off. They discuss Jordan and they argue that the boys need to be told about their dad’s powers. Lois says she thinks Jonathan has powers, Clark defends not telling them by saying that Jordan would feel more alien than he already does.

At the Daily Planet, Clark gets notified that he has been fired, Lois tells him he’s going to need to find another excuse as to why he’s late. Like clockwork, Clark gets a call from Dr. Frye and rushes over. He soon finds out that his mother, Martha, had a stroke and passed away. The episode returns with the family at Martha’s funeral, the Cushing family comes to pay their respects, and Jonathan teases Jordan about seeing Sarah (Inde Navarrette) again.

The CW

They catch up, and Sarah says despite them still having puberty in Smallville, the cell service isn’t great. They head to the barn to reset the internet router, but Jordan hesitates, saying Clark doesn’t like them going in there because there are things inside that can kill them.

Inside the Kent home, Lana (Emmanuelle Chriqui), Kyle (Erik Valdez), Clark, and Lois are having a drink and catching up. Kyle, who naturally has his nose turned up to the big city folk, gets into it with Lois, who stands her ground. When Clark says they haven’t made a decision on the farm, Kyle drops a bomb that Martha has in fact made a decision on it already.

Back in the barn with Sarah, Jonathan, and Jordan, Sarah asks for Jordan’s phone to give him her number and she invites him to a bonfire. Jordan heads up to fix the router where he slips and falls. After a pipe nearly falls on top of Jordan, Jonathan jumps in the way to save his brother. Clark rushes to help the boys, flinging a pipe off of them. Later on, they get treated for what they find out are just mild concussions. Phew! Jordan begins to question what exactly happened in the barn, saying it’s up to them to find out what that is.

Sam Lane returns, showing camera footage of the nuclear plant rupturing, telling Clark that whoever contributed to the near explosion knows and has studied Superman and is clearly Kryptonian, as he has left a message for him to read: “you are not a hero Kal-El.” Lois tells him he can’t go, and Clark agrees. Sam says Superman doesn’t get to have a normal life and neither does she. This is what she signed up for when she married a superhero.

Lois and Clark head to the bank to discuss the farm’s future with Lana. Lana shows them mortgage papers and says they have two options: to pay the loan or receive a buyout to pay off the remainder of the property.

Jordan and Jonathan are back in the barn being sleuths, looking for any clues to tell them what happened to them. They discover a trap door that leads to a cellar. In it, they find their dad’s pod. An orange glowing object reveals itself to Jordan. The boys confront their parents, namely their dad, about the “alien ship” in the barn. Clark decides to tell them the truth, about all of it, where he came from, who he is — and they have a hard time processing it.

“I’ve seen Superman before. We’ve seen him!”

Clark takes off his glasses and lifts the truck up to prove to them he is who he says he is. Jordan is still upset with the lies that were kept from him. “You weren’t sent here to be a father.”

Clark gets alerted of another nuclear facility in danger, and this time he is met by The Stranger (Wolé Parks) and they begin to fight. After chasing him around, he stabs Superman with kryptonite.

At the bonfire, Jordan meets up with Sarah and she talks about how drastically life has changed for her as she has gotten older. A year prior, she confesses to him that she took her mom’s pills and that she was sent to therapy. But Jordan completely understands because he went through a similar situation. Jordan kisses her without realizing she has a boyfriend, and Sarah’s boyfriend hits Jordan. Jonathan shows up and attempts to protect him, but gets himself in a world of trouble, too.

As Jordan becomes angrier, we quickly find out that he is in fact the one that possesses the powers out of the two of them, as a shot of his red lasers is shown. At home, Lois finds out that something terrible has happened to Clark as we see visuals of him falling from the sky. We once again hear Martha’s voice saying, “Clark, come home.”

Clark heads to the scene of the fire, which Jordan had started from his laser beams, and he meets up with the boys. Back at home, Jordan talks about his experience thus far and how his powers are beginning to manifest. Clark begins to realize what his mom meant by asking him to come home. He says he believes the family needs Smallville, and they need small-town living. Lois hesitantly agrees to move back.

Clark and Jordan are seen on the porch having a heart-to-heart where he lets him know he will always be there for him. “I haven’t always been there for you, but I promise you, from now on… I will be.”

Clark, Lois, and Lana are in the home discussing their options, and Clark tells them that they want to take over the loan and reopen the farm. They inquire about Morgan Edge and his ownership of part of the bank. Sarah, Jonathan, and Jordan are hanging out, and Jordan apologizes for kissing her before Jonathan peaces out. Sarah asks if he is able to keep her secret, and he says he will. Jordan talks to Jonathan about the powers, and Jon pushes it to the side, saying that this just proves his skills on the field are in fact all his own doing.

Clark and Lois enter, telling the boys they are thinking about permanently moving back but wanted to have a family discussion before they really do. Clark asks them to head to the barn with him, and that he wants to show them something. When they ask if it’s superhero-related, Clark tells them it’s not and that he wants to teach them how to attach a plow to the tractor. Because this is an instance with totally normal father and son bonding time, right?

The episode closes out with The Stranger and we find out that this is Captain Luthor — as in Lex Luthor. Is this a Lex from an Earth destroyed during “Crisis on Infinite Earths”?!

Superman & Lois airs Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.

Review: It’s the Grand Finale of ‘Tales From the Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death’ Issue #6

The final issue of Tales From the Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death is available now!

The story of Klaus Hargreeves from Gerard Way and Shaun Simon (The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys), You Look Like Death issue #6 features art by I.N.J. Culbard, lettering from Nate Piekos, and a cover by The Umbrella Academy‘s Gabriel Bá, along with two variant covers from I.N.J. Culbard and Jenny Frison.

Gerard Way! With funding from the Hollywood Gods, Klaus directs his new film, starring ageing starlet Vivian Clarke, in a longshot attempt to rein in her evil, while finding some peace for his doomed author friend. But the real ace in hole may be the vampire chimp lord who’s put a price on Klaus’s head.

In the previous issues, Klaus was kicked out of the Umbrella Academy house by dear old dad Sir Reginald Hargreeves and left to his own devices. On his way out, he raids a local drug stop belonging to the sinister vampire-chimp Mr. Shivers. In an attempt to escape the new price on his head, Klaus runs off to the one place he knows he’ll fit in — Hollywood. When he arrives he finds solace with a jaded actress who’s fallen from the limelight, Vivian Clarke, who uses Klaus’ powers to her advantage. But soon he catches on, and we learn that Vivian a dark and sinister secret has found itself a new host in Ms. Clarke …

At the end of issue #5, Klaus has designed a way to get Vivian and her dark powers under control and Mr. Shivers off his back, as well as help his author friend stuck in The Void, Lyle. Let’s make a movie!

There are spoilers for issue #6 of Tales From the Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death below.

Issue #6 brought a satisfying conclusion to this series, showing a more confident and capable Klaus than we meet in the Umbrella Academy comics. Unlike the Klaus we see in The Umbrella Academy Netflix show, the Klaus in You Look Like Death somehow manages to wrap up all of his nemeses in a tight little bow, and move on. Something we wouldn’t have expected from a younger Séance.

Another great little addition to this was Klaus shedding the shadow of his father as he makes his own life out in Hollywood. Reginald is a constant antagonist in the Hargreeves’ lives, even after he dies, and to see Klaus grow out of the trauma of his father (at least for now) was a welcome site.

This satisfied the story for every character involved, with each of them getting exactly what they deserve. We even got a glimpse of a popular sibling relationship in Klaus and Allison, and it was refreshing to see the support.

Klaus outsmarted all those who thought they had him fooled, and saved the one who saw himself as helpless. It was truly a masterful end to the series written by Gerard Way and Shaun Simon. We can’t wait for subsequent series about the other Hargreeves siblings to follow.

You can order all issues of Tales From the Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death online through Things From Another World or digitally through Dark Horse Comics. Be sure to check your local comic shops as well! Additionally, a complete 6-issue volume will be available March 17 and is available for pre-order.

After teasing the announcement on social media, bestselling author Rick Riordan has announced his next novel! In an exclusive blog for Barnes and Noble, Riordan announced that Daughter of the Deep would be hitting shelves October 5, 2021. The plot will be based on the novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, imagining a potential sequel to the classic tale. Daughter of the Deep will center on protagonist Ana Dakkar, a high school freshman who discovers she is a descendent of the legendary Captain Nemo.

Ana Dakkar is a freshman at Harding-Pencroft Academy, a five-year high school that graduates the best marine scientists, naval warriors, navigators, and underwater explorers in the world. Ana’s parents died while on a scientific expedition two years ago, and the only family she’s got left is her older brother, Dev, also a student at HP. (And they’ve heard all the Harry Potter jokes already, so don’t go there.) Ana’s freshman year culminates with the class’s weekend trial at sea, the details of which have been kept secret. She only hopes she has what it’ll take to succeed.

All her worries are blown out of the water when, on the bus ride to the ship, Ana and her schoolmates witness a terrible tragedy that will change the trajectory of their lives. But wait, there’s more. The professor accompanying them informs Ana that their rival school, Land Institute, and Harding-Pencroft have been fighting a cold war for a hundred and fifty years. Now that cold war has been turned up to a full broil, and the freshmen are in danger of becoming fish food. In a race against deadly enemies, Ana will make amazing friends and astounding discoveries about her heritage as she puts her leadership skills to the test for the first time.

The novel is available for pre-order now on Barnes and Noble! Stay tuned for more information, including the official cover art that has yet to be revealed.

New Photos for ‘Walker’ Season 1, Episode 6 “Bar None” Released

0

Booze, bars, and birthdays — oh my! Oh, and apparently surprise visits to the alleged killer of your brother’s wife’s murderer in jail. New photos for episode 6 of Walker, “Bar None,” have been released — and boy are they a doozy. Before checking out the photos below, make sure to check out the synopsis of the episode here.

As teased in the trailer for the upcoming episode, Hoyt will be making a comeback… as Liam and James visit him in prison. The purpose of their little sit down? Hoyt, in what seems to be some type of set up by the captain and the lawyer, will be rooming with Carlos Mendoza, the man who allegedly killed Cordell’s wife, Emily. Is Hoyt gathering intel for the pair yet another sign that Emily’s death wasn’t an accident after all? It sure seems like it, especially in the wake of James and Liam’s conversation at the end of last episode.

Meanwhile, in the rest of the photos, multiple characters are seen at Geri’s bar — both in the past and the present. The past pictures look like they are from someone’s birthday party. The present pictures are taken on the one-year anniversary of Emily’s death.

From the looks of these photos, there will be a lot happening in “Bar None.” Walker returns to The CW for its sixth episode on the night of March 11 at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT. Make sure to get caught up before then with our recaps and other content, which can be found here.

Recap: The 118 Faces a Crazy Day in ‘9-1-1’ Season 4, Episode 6 “Jinx”

0

After a few emotionally heavy episodes over the last few weeks, episode 6 of 9-1-1 brings some lighthearted moments back to our screens as the 118 battle against a firehouse jinx! Let’s jump right in.

The episode kicks off with a highly unusual opening, even for 9-1-1, with Athena and assisting officers in hot pursuit of the engine 118 fire truck that is clearly not slowing down for anyone. With that we flash back to earlier in the day at the firehouse where Buck and Eddie are double checking the equipment on the truck. Chimney and Hen give him some grief about it (he was a little bit of a nightmare with a clipboard before) but he assures them that Buck 3.0 is much improved. His parents agreed to go to some therapy sessions with him, and he feels like he’s grown beyond his self-proclaimed Buck 2.0 era. He turns to ask a new probie about his first shift. The probie says it’s been quiet and Buck, Hen, and Chimney immediately panic at the Q word. Of course, the sirens blare and they are off on what the trio deem to be a jinxed shift thanks to the probie.

FOX

On the way to their call, the team explains to a skeptical Eddie that they are doomed by the EMS gods to a shift full of strange and often dumb calls. He thinks they’re acting ridiculous, and Hen shares that the last time Buck said it (the gods took it out of context, he swears!) they had 36 calls (a house record), and Buck ended up trapped in a room where the fire suppression system went off and he was covered head to toe in the foam the system releases. They arrive to the fender bender call (that’s not weird, says Eddie) which was caused by a rapper, Izzy Chainz, who is duct taped to a billboard promoting his new album (that’s weird!). Buck makes his way onto the ladder to get him down while Hen and Chimney tend to the young woman and older man in the accident. As a crowd gathers, Buck tries to talk Izzy down, and makes sure to ask the important questions, “Are you wearing anything underneath that?” He’s not. Buck tells him he’s going to regret that later as teams on the ground get the jump cushion into place. Athena tells Bobby that Izzy’s story checks out, which makes everything legal. They can only control traffic until he comes down. Bobby fills her in on the morning panic over the jinx, telling her he doesn’t believe it but the team does, which makes them “get squirrely”

Meanwhile, a firefighter dressed in gear from the 147 helps Ana Flores (Christopher’s teacher), who has a severe burn from her coffee. The firefighter gives her ice for it. Moments later Eddie notices her and correctly tends to her burn (bandages and keeping it dry, not ice!) as she tells him about the firefighter. Ana also shares that she has a new job, vice principle at a different school (which removes any conflict of interest for that potential budding romance we saw last season). They part ways after he fixes up her hand. Over at the billboard, the tape starts to release and Izzy falls straight onto the jump cushion where all the tape falls off as he jumps around yelling to the crowd.

The crew arrive back at the station where they are just about to dig into Bobby’s mac and cheese (we’d like that recipe please!) when the alarm sounds again. From here a hilarious montage of odd calls ensues as Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” plays. They rescue a cat (and a man) from a tree, report to an accident, help a woman whose head is stuck in a mascot lion head (she proceeds to barf on poor Buck), an octopus stuck on a woman’s head, and more. These are interspersed with the team back at the station desperately trying to eat the mac and cheese (or anything at all really), which is eventually completely burnt as it’s left in the oven. Buck hilariously drinks coffee straight from the pot at one point.

FOX

At yet another call, Eddie tells Buck about his conversation with Ana earlier in the day. Inside the party store, a clown is trapped under several large tanks of helium, one of which is opened. Buck and Eddie try (and fail) not to laugh at Bobby, Hen, and Chimney, who all have very high pitched voices thanks to the helium (thank you to whichever writer came up with this). As they help move tanks, their laughter gets higher until they too sound like squeaky chipmunks. Fresh off a boring call, Eddie ridicules them again for believing in a curse as they all climb into the truck, when a live power pole falls onto the fire engine trapping them in their own truck. At the dispatch center, Josh finds out the team is stuck and gets a text from Chimney asking about breaking curses. Meanwhile Hen argues the semantics of a curse verses a jinx until another firehouse arrives. Of course, before they help, they stop to take pictures of the 118. Bobby isn’t amused.

FOX

Back at the station later that night, Eddie finds Bobby in the kitchen and Hen, Chimney, and Buck reading (“Medical, babies, women,” Hen clarifies for him) and Buck asks Eddie what Ana’s love language is. Everyone’s interest is immediately piqued and Eddie unwillingly (thanks, Buck) fills them in on Ana and her new job. Before he has to share more, he’s saved by the call bell. They arrive on scene to a house fire in a man’s garage, where Bobby attempts to take over the garden hose from the homeowner until everyone can get set up. The man is panicked over the fire, and Bobby asks him what’s inside. Just as the man tells him it’s old files, the garage erupts as fireworks ($10k worth of fireworks, according to the homeowner) ignite. Eddie needs help with the hose and calls for a nearby firefighter wearing a 147 helmet to assist. It’s Brian, the same one we saw treat Ana that morning. As Brian leaves, Eddie tells him about the wrong injury dressing that morning. Bobby shows up to help, and Eddie tells him the 147 firefighter already assisted but Bobby assures him that’s impossible, that fire station was damaged thanks to the mudslide and no one is there.

Back at the station, Eddie and Bobby look at a photo of the 147, and Eddie confirms that the man helping him was not the Harmon in the picture. Bobby guesses he could be a criminal using it as a way to get into people’s homes, but Eddie thinks the guy genuinely wanted to help. The conversation shifts to Bobby giving Eddie some sage advice explaining that he’ll never get back the piece of himself that Shannon took with her, but he will begin to heal slowly. It’s an emotional moment between the two, and Eddie thanks him for the advice.

FOX

An employee at Jim’s Burgers answers the phone as a mother and son exit to eat outside. Just as they sit down, the same man throws a chair through a window and begins screaming for everyone to get out, prompting the mother to call 9-1-1. Athena and the 118 arrive on scene, where she asks Larry to explain everything. He tells her he received a call from the fire chief telling him the restaurant had a gas leak, and he needed to bust all the windows to save everyone. Athena isn’t happy that he asked literally no other questions (can we blame him though?). Bobby and Buck confirm there’s no gas leak, and Bobby comments about yet another person pretending to be LAFD. At that moment he spots Brian (the fake firefighter) in the crowd and when Brian runs, Buck chases after him. Now, we’d normally expect Buck to catch up and tackle anyone on the run, but he’s in full gear so we’ll let it slide that Brian not only outruns him, but steals the 118 fire engine in a bid to evade the police. Hen and Chimney finally got their food, but at what cost?!

FOX

Athena jumps in her car and calls for backup as she follows the truck in the same chase that opened the episode. A five-alarm fire comes across the radio, and everyone piles into the ambulance, Buck hilariously having to lay on the gurney to make room. On their way to the call, Eddie talks to Brian over the radio, appealing to his desire to do good and help others in distress. Eddie tells him that they need his help again, and he can help save lives by taking the fire truck to the five-alarm fire. It takes some persuading, but Brian ultimately agrees. On scene, he jumps out and tries to make a run for it, but he doesn’t get far. Brian is arrested as the 118 assist with the fire.

Back at the station Buck, Chimney, and Hen rejoice that the shift is over and things will go back to normal now. Bobby offers to take everyone out for breakfast, and they agree, all except Eddie who already has plans. At breakfast, Bobby fills everyone in on Brian. He found the 147 firefighting gear in the debris from the mudslide, cleaned it off and passed himself off as a firefighter by using a scanner to listen to their calls. He was even responsible for the fake LAFD fire chief call, having believed there was an actual gas leak. Just as they dig in to their breakfast, a nearby person drops to the ground and they jump into action (and so the jinx continues?). Meanwhile, Eddie meets Ana for breakfast, both clearly a little nervous but excited to be there. The settle in to order food and catch up.

FOX

9-1-1 airs Mondays on FOX at 9 p.m. ET.
