‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’ Episode 4: Holy Sh#%, John Walker and That Chilling Ending

If you’re reading this, seemingly you’ve recovered enough to pick your jaw up off of the floor after that wild ending to the fourth episode of Marvel’s hit new miniseries The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

Episode 4, “The Whole World Is Watching,” certainly gave viewers a lot of content, but more than anything it gave us a whole new laundry list of reasons to despise discount Great Value brand Captain America, John Walker (Listen, you’re doing great, Wyatt Russell!) Arrogant comments and actions aside, the most important Walker-related turn of the episode was when he knocked out Baron Zemo and secretly pocketed the last remaining vial of the Super Soldier serum. This moment brought things full circle with the comics in a way, because that version of John Walker gained his powers from the Power Broker process. Considering the vials were stolen from the Power Broker in the series in the first place, it’s an ironic connection.

Shortly after that scene, Hoskins and Walker had a conversation with ominous connotations. While discussing the Super Soldier serum, Walker asked his partner if he would be worried if it would change him. However, Hoskins noted that power just makes a person more of themselves (and referenced Steve Rogers and Karli Morgenthau). He goes on to mention Walker’s decorated past as a soldier.

Walker proceeds to take the serum off-screen, and then we see the dangerous part of him that has been frighteningly exacerbated by the serum: his rage. The Flag Smashers accidentally killed Hoskins during battle, which sent Walker into a blind fury as he chased after them in pursuit of Karli. Though she evaded his grasp, he managed to corner another one of the Flag Smashers and proceeded to beat him to death with the shield. (This also functioned as a parallel to the fight scene between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark in Civil War.)

In the final moments of the episode, onlookers watched the scene in horror and camera panned to one of the most disturbing images the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever presented to viewers: Captain America standing tall with his vibranium shield covered in blood. Roll credits.

Though we’ll have to wait until next week to see how this will possibly play out, the fact that countless people were recording the incident on their phones certainly doesn’t bode well for Walker. So let’s hurry up and get that shield back into the hands of the man who truly deserves to wield it: Sam Wilson.

Episode 4 of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is now streaming exclusively on Disney+. Episode 5 will land next Friday, April 16. Stick around for our weekly episodic recaps, theories, reviews, and more.

‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’: A Guide to Unlocking the Madripoor Website

So you’ve just stumbled across the latest trick up Marvel’s sleeve, an Easter egg-filled website entitled www.exploremadripoor.com. The website references an island nation first introduced in the comics, whose Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart was introduced in last week’s episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, “Power Broker.”

Upon first glance, the website seems to function as a fun sort of travel advertisement for Madripoor. However, some extra clicking and poking around will eventually reveal the hidden secrets within. For those that want to uncover the mystery by themselves, stop reading now and get to work! For those that would like some help without the guessing, we’ll walk you through it.

Hightown

The Hightown section will lead you to a page for the Hightown Nightclub. You’ll find a box in the bottom corner that asks for an invite code, which is Sharon Carter. This will bring you to an art gallery with a “digital auction.” After you place a bid in the live auction, you’ll see a note at the bottom that reads “Shipping and handling coordinated through Power Broker, Buccaneer Bay.”

You’ll also find Baron Zemo’s Wanted poster hidden near the top left of the Hightown Nightclub page.

Buccaneer Bay

When you go to “book a charter” at Buccaneer Bay, you’ll be taken to a page with an image of the container yard from episode 3. Near the top of the screen, a blue container will reveal a spray painted message that reads “Power Broker is Watching.” Near the bottom, another message says “One World, One People” behind the Flag Smashers symbol.

There’s also a box in the bottom corner that asks for an access code, which is Power Broker (as found on the auction page). This will open another page that requests a four-digit Container ID. Typing in any configuration of four numbers will bring up information on a random container. Furthermore, it’s important to note that entering the same number multiple times will bring up different results each time.

Ship names were initially appearing with the results when the website launched, which harbored plenty of references to various mutants (which makes sense, given Madripoor’s comic connections to mutants and the X-Men) and other Marvel figures. However they don’t appear to be working anymore at this time.

There’s a specific set of numbers that will bring up a guaranteed result: 4261, the container Dr. Nagel was in. This will bring up spray painted images of Zemo, Sam, and Bucky, and security footage of what took place in the container yard in episode 3.

Additionally, 1273 will bring up Sharon Carter’s Wanted poster.

Lowtown

Before clicking into the Brass Monkey Saloon page in Lowtown, you’ll find a Wanted poster for Karli Morgenthau near the middle of the page. Then, on the Brass Monkey Saloon page, clicking around will reveal a menu and Wanted posters for Bucky and Sam.

This page is also where the invite code for the Hightown Nightclub came from — if you click the arms raised in the air near the bottom, a message will pop up stating that you’re on the list for the auction and to ask for … you guessed it … Sharon Carter at the door.

Extras

You’ll notice a string of numbers in the top left corner of each Wanted poster, which feature the date and issue that each character made their Marvel Comics debut!

Episode 4 of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will land exclusively on Disney+ Friday, April 9. Make sure to follow along for our weekly episodic recaps, reviews, theories, and more.

‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’ Episode 4: We Need to Talk About That Bucky Barnes Scene

As promised, Marvel’s hit new miniseries The Falcon and The Winter Soldier not only bolsters an action-packed story that feels consistent with the films, but the longer, episodic structure has also allowed the show to take a deep dive into character development.

Whereas we’re finally getting the long-awaited backstory for Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, we’ve already seen much of the progression of Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes starting with Captain America: The First Avenger. So rather than a backstory when it comes to Bucky, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is taking a careful and meaningful approach to his mental healing process while he sheds his past as a brainwashed assassin and reclaims his identity as James “Bucky” Barnes. Thus far, the series has revealed quite a few things about where Bucky’s at right now: he’s attending mandatory therapy sessions with Dr. Raynor, he’s still having nightmares about being the Winter Soldier, he’s repurposed Steve Rogers’ notebook as a list of his amends, he had been ignoring Sam’s messages for quite some time, and overall he’s just been very lonely.

In episode 3, “Power Bower,” when Bucky approached Baron Zemo in his jail cell, the other man immediately began to recite the Winter Soldier trigger words in order to see how he would react. Though Bucky did not react, Zemo noted that “something is still in there.” Later in the episode, Bucky had to slip back into the role of the Winter Soldier and pretend he was under Zemo’s control in Madripoor, which further exacerbated the issue.

Continuing upon this, episode 4 (“The Whole World Is Watching”) opened with an incredibly emotional scene set in Wakanda six years prior. Sitting by a fire in the night, Ayo tells Bucky that “it is time.” Bucky stares into the flames and asks, “You sure about this?” and Ayo assures him that she won’t let him hurt anyone. She then begins to recite the Russian trigger words for the Winter Soldier, “Longing, rusted, seventeen … ” Bucky interrupts her and tells her that it’s not going to work, and his face contorts with heavy emotions as flashbacks to his time as the Winter Soldier plague his mind. As Ayo says the final word, “Freight car,” Bucky is shaking and tears begin to roll down his face.

“You are free.”

The Winter Soldier deprogramming was successful. Bucky continues to cry, bringing a fist to his mouth as he’s overcome with emotions. He smiles in disbelief.

Looking all the way back to The First Avenger in 2011, Sebastian Stan’s portrayal of Bucky Barnes and subsequently the Winter Soldier over the years has been nothing short of impressive. He fills the role so innately well that it’s impossible to imagine anybody else stepping into those shoes. Watching Stan take on the opportunity to further expand on his character in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier has been an absolute treat for audiences, as he’s been given the opportunity to both lean into Bucky’s sarcastic, humorous side while also tapping back into his deeper pain and struggles.

Stan has always had a beautiful way of conveying Bucky’s emotions with facial expressions, his eyes in particular, but his performance in the opening scene of “The Whole World Is Watching” truly knocked everything out of the park and then some. His anguish, tidal wave of emotional trauma, and subsequent relief were all immensely palpable for audiences, sweeping us into the current right alongside him.

Though The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is sure to hold more epic surprises in the final two episodes, this scene will most certainly go down as one of the best that the series has given us.

Episode 4 of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is now streaming exclusively on Disney+. Episode 5 will land next Friday, April 16. Stick around for our weekly episodic recaps, theories, reviews, and more.

‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’: Marvel Launches Easter Egg-Filled Madripoor Website

With just hours to go until the fourth episode of Marvel’s hit new miniseries The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, an Easter egg-filled website for the seedy, sketchy island nation of Madripoor has launched.

Though comic fans have long since known about Madripoor and its heavy ties to the X-Men, it made its officially Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance in last week’s episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, “Power Broker.” In search of a lead for the source of the new Super Soldier serum that has juiced up the Flag-Smashers, a fresh-out-of-jail Baron Zemo took Sam and Bucky (on his private jet, of course) to the island to meet with a less-than-savory contact of his named Selby. Though they partially obtained the information that they needed, the meeting ended with a shootout, a hefty bounty on each of their heads, and a surprise reunion with Sharon Carter. Who is apparently now a wealthy dealer of stolen art living in Hightown, thanks to the Avengers’ inability to help her out in the wake of the events of Civil War.

Although the next episode will find Zemo, Sam, and Bucky in Latvia, Marvel seemingly isn’t quite finished with Madripoor just yet. The website, www.exploremadripoor.com, functions as an edgy-looking travel advertisement for the nation. However, there’s far more to the website than first meets the eye. Some clicking around will soon reveal hidden secrets galore. We won’t spoil it all here just yet, so make sure to check it out yourself.

We’ve also put together a step-by-step guide to unlocking the website.

Episode 4 of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will land exclusively on Disney+ Friday, April 9. Make sure to follow along for our weekly episodic recaps, reviews, theories, and more.
