It’s time to defy gravity.

The long-awaited film adaptation of the musical Wicked is finally coming to the big screen this holiday season. Universal Pictures has recently released a first-look trailer for the movie, featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in lead roles.

Wicked is a musical based on the book of the same name written by Gregory Maguire. The story tells the untold tale of two witches from Oz, Elphaba (played by Erivo) and Glinda (played by Grande). They meet as students at Shiz University in the magical Land of Oz and form an unlikely but profound friendship. However, after encountering the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads, putting them on very different paths in life. Glinda’s desire for popularity leads her to be seduced by power, while Elphaba’s determination to remain true to herself and those around her will have unexpected and shocking consequences on her future. Their incredible adventures in Oz will eventually lead them to fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Winnie Holzman, the film stars Erivo, Grande, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James, and Keala Settle.

Wicked will be released in two parts, with the first chapter arriving in theaters on November 27, 2024, and the second chapter arriving in theaters on November 26, 2025.
