Next year, Planet of the Apes is returning to the big screen with a new installment, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The new film in long-running franchise is set to premiere on May 24, 2024, this time with Wes Ball behind the camera. Though there’s still some time before the feature debuts, 20th Century Studios has released the first teaser.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes takes place years and years following the previous trilogy. Caesar is long gone, but new generations of apes have continued to establish their dominance, forcing humans to retreat to the shadows while the apes live a peaceful life. However, one tyrannical ape begins to upend the apes’ harmony, kicking a young ape into action that leads him on “a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.” Based on the trailer, it seems this installment will be much closer in time to the original Planet of the Apes.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was directed by Wes Ball from a screenplay by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver. Ball, Jaffa, Silver, Joe Hartwick Jr., and Jason Reed serve as producers, with Peter Chernin and Jeno Topping as executive producers. The cast includes Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy, among others.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes premieres May 24 in theaters. Watch the trailer below:
