Disney’s beloved 2002 animated feature Lilo & Stitch is getting the live-action treatment, and Knight Edge Media shared the news today that the role of Lilo has officially been filled!

Newcomer Maia Kealoha has reportedly been selected to fill the of Lilo. Aside from Zach Galifianakis, who has been cast in a yet-to-be-determined role, Kealoha is the only other actor currently attached to the project.

Dean Fleischer Camp, the man behind Oscar-nominated indie favorite Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, will be serving as director. While Chris Kekaniokalani Bright has adapted Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois’ original story for live-action.

The film tells the story of the bond formed between lonely Hawaiian girl Lilo and a vaguely dog-like alien creation she names Stitch. Over the course of the film, we see nosy social workers, Stitch’s past catching up with him, and more trying to tear the duo apart, but in the end, friendship and a sense of family save the day.

With a cast of characters that will require some very talented actors and a lot of CG animation, this live adaptation still has a long way to go before it’s ready for our screens. So be sure to check back for more information.
