Money, Money, Money

Bettina Strauss/The CW

Chloe comes to visit Dennis at work. He thinks it’s about his estrangement from their parents, but she has a problem she needs his help with. Someone stole a significant amount of money from their parents’ trust, and she has no idea who did it. Althea quickly jumps in to investigate and realizes it was an inside job. Interviewing Chloe’s friends proves unproductive until they talk to Marina. She has a cover story, but Althea sees right through it based on her deep knowledge of the college cheer scene. They expose her as a fraud and get the money back. In her gratitude, Chloe accidentally reveals to Althea that Dennis is choosing not to contact his parents.

Althea asks Dennis about this, and he tells her everything. She gently suggests that Chloe needs help and that he should consider talking to them again. Dennis is reluctant to give up his newfound freedom, but Althea reassures him that they can still live their own lives.

Tough Choices

Jin is upset to hear that Anthony is voting for the security ordinance, especially when he finds out they blackmailed him to ensure his support. Anthony tries to smooth things over by offering Jin a job in his new administration — assuming he gets elected, that is. Meanwhile, Mei-Li gets a visit from Carrie. Sebastian is on the cover of a food magazine, and that worries Carrie’s bosses considering his past conviction. Mei-Li doesn’t want to let Sebastian go, but Carrie points out that in their contract, it states that Mei-Li should have told them about Sebastian’s past. Since she didn’t, they could be in breach of contract and be sued.

Evan and Jin talk about the blackmail, with Evan believing that stolen campaign documents could be the source. He also advises Jin not to take the job given his own experience working with the DA. Jin decides the best option is to run for office himself. Sebastian overhears Mei-Li discussing the contract with Jin, and he realizes what must have happened.

Mei-Li insists she will fight for him, but Sebastian tells her not to. He wants Harmony Dumplings and the rest of the staff to succeed, and more importantly, he doesn’t want to be the reason she loses everything. She protests, telling her that it’s no longer just her restaurant; it’s theirs. But his mind is made up. At home that night, he sobs on his bed as Ryan comforts him.

A Shocking Betrayal

Justine Yeung/The CW

Nicky and Bo wake up in bed together after a romantic night. She finally confesses the truth about her side gig fighting magical crime, and he takes it surprisingly well. When he goes to shower, she gets a text from Henry asking her to meet him at the library.

After sneaking back into her house (fooling no one except Jin), she agrees to Henry’s request to meet. Ryan, Pei-Ling, and Henry are already there and ready to discuss Henry’s vision of Zhilan being chased. They all worry that Xiao could escape if she gathers enough of the spirits. Ryan matches the symbol on the weapon Henry saw to the myth of the Harvester. They also discover that the blades were stolen right around the time of the earthquake, which means that at one point they moved between worlds. Nicky realizes that if the blades can travel, she can too.

Henry is resistant to even trying to send Nicky to the other world, fearing she won’t come back. He’s holding back his true feelings for her. Nicky reassures him that this isn’t the first time she’s faced something of this magnitude, especially with Henry by her side. She tells him that even though their relationship has changed, the trust is there. He reluctantly agrees.

They are able to launch Nicky into the other world, but her necklace giving her a connection to our world shatters. Wandering, she eventually finds Zhilan, who is hiding with Sara and Tianyu after losing her own group. She doesn’t believe they can defeat the Harvester, but when she hears that Pei-Ling is alive and directly threatened by him, her attitude changes. They decide to team up, and not a moment too soon — they are betrayed by the duo who took Zhilan in. But the Harvester leaves Nicky and Zhilan alone since they’re both alive, killing one-half of the pair as Tianyu runs away.

Justine Yeung/The CW

Nicky and Zhilan try to battle the Harvester, but he leaves them both alone and knows Nicky’s name. As they try to protect Tianyu, Henry tries to bring Nicky back. He’s trying to focus on her, and it’s not working. Pei-Ling urges him to draw on his love for her, which will be strong enough to bring her back.

In the other realm, the Harvester kills Tianyu. Henry establishes a clear connection, and Nicky has seconds to make a choice: follow that pull and leave with Zhilan or kill the Harvester. She chooses to escape, which leads to a bittersweet reunion between Zhilan and Pei-Ling. But Zhilan isn’t the only one who got brought back. The Harvester arrives in San Francisco. Taking off his mask, we see his true identity: Bo.
