Next month, Octavia E. Butler’s work finally makes its way to screens as FX and Hulu prepare to debut their series Kindred, based on Butler’s renowned novel. Ahead of the premiere next month, the first teaser has been released.
The series follows Dana, a modern-day Black woman who begins settling into her new life. One night, Dana is abruptly pulled into the antebellum South, summoned to save Rufus, a young white boy and son of a plantation owner. Though she eventually returns to her time, Dana continues to be pulled back, with each stay longer than the last.
The trailer gives an eerie first look at Dana’s unwilling time travel as the past and present begin to bleed together. It exacerbates the fear Dana experiences and how her reactions in modern times begin to arouse some suspicion on the goings-on between her and her boyfriend Kevin. It teases the dire situations in the past, from Dana’s very first summoning to the more urgent ones as she fights to get back to the present.
Kindred stars Mallori Johnson, Micah Stock, Ryan Kwanten, Gayle Rankin, Austin Smith, David Alexander Kaplan, Sophina Brown, and Sheria Irving. It is written, showrun, and executive produced by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. Additional executive producers include Joe Weisberg, Joel Fields, Darren Aronofsky, Ari Handel of Protozoa Pictures, Courtney Lee-Mitchell, Jules Jackson, and Ernestine Walker. Janicza Bravo directed and executive produced the pilot. FX Productions produced.
Kindred premieres on Hulu on Tuesday, December 13. Watch the teaser below and find our NYCC panel highlights for the show here.
