Dear Martin author Nic Stone has announced her next upcoming book! On February 28, 2023, she will release her new YA novel titled Chaos Theory. The book follows not long after her other to-be-relased books Whiteout and How to Be a (Young) Antiracist, both of which she co-wrote.

Chaos Theory focuses on two teens, Shelbi and Andy, who both face mental health struggles. Shelbi is described as a “certified genius living with bipolar disorder,” while Andy battles his own grief and addictions. In her announcement, Stone shared her personal connection to the story, adding that she wanted to create an “accurate and well-vetted representation of Black kids with ‘abnormal brain chemistry.'” She emphasizes the importance of the characters being Black and how other factors tie into the stigma.

Chaos Theory hits shelves on February 28, 2023. Check out the official synopsis below, and be sure to pre-order your copy.

“Scars exist to remind us of what we’ve survived.

Since Shelbi enrolled at Windward Academy as a senior and won’t be there very long, she hasn’t bothered making friends. What her classmates don’t know about her can’t be used to hurt her—you know, like it did at her last school.

WASTED

Andy Criddle is not okay. At all.
He’s had far too much to drink.
Again. Which is bad.
And things are about to get worse.

When Shelbi sees Andy at his lowest, she can relate. So she doesn’t resist reaching out. And there’s no doubt their connection has them both seeing stars . . . but the closer they get, the more the past threatens to pull their universes apart.”
