Mads Mikkelsen is reteaming with another director for a new film. The actor will reunite with A Royal Affair director Nikolaj Arcel on an upcoming Danish historical drama currently titled King’s Land.

Based on the bestselling Danish book The Captain and Ann Barbara, King’s Land is set in the mid-1700s and follows Danish King Fredirik V, who declared that “Jutland should be tamed, cultivated, and colonized” so that the royal house could claim new taxes. However, people were reluctant to take his lead, and Ludvig Kahlen would eventually go to the heath to pursue a lifelong dream.

Along with directing, Arcel wrote the screenplay with Anders Thomas (Riders of Justice, another film starring Mikkelsen). Louise Vesth serves as producer, along with primary production company Zentropa, and other international companies including Koch Films (Germany), The Jokers Films (France), September Films (Benelux), and Vertigo Media (Hungary).

Production is expected to begin in early September and projected to release sometime in Fall 2023.
