Netflix has greenlit The Old Guard 2 and filming will begin in early 2022!

The Old Guard series is based on the graphic novels of the same name by Leandro Fernández. The Old Guard debuted on Netflix in 2020. Greg Rucka wrote the screenplay adaptation for The Old Guard and will write the screenplay for the sequel.

The Old Guard series will have back-to-back historic directors. Gina Prince-Bythewood directed The Old Guard, and Victoria Mahoney will direct The Old Guard 2. The original movie had a budget of $70 million, making Prince-Bythewood the first Black woman to direct a comic book film. Victoria Mahoney became the first Black female director of a Star Wars film in which she was second unit director.

Victory Mahoney also directed an episode of Lovecraft Country and an episode of The Red Line. In a statement, she said, “[I] cannot communicate the true measure of my excitement-being invited on The Old Guard journey, alongside ferocious badasses.”

The Old Guard series stars Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Van Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The Old Guard is a group of immortal mercenaries led by Andy/Andromache of Scythia (Charlize Theron), who heal every time they die or injure themselves. They do not know why they regenerate. The immortals learn that they are capable of dying eventually. It becomes harder to keep their immortality a secret in the current climate of social media where cameras film their every move and enemies try to film their regeneration. They face threats from every direction, including in their inner circle. We look forward to seeing how these threats materialize in the sequel.

Filming will begin in early 2022. Stay tuned for updates.
