Candyman is an iconic horror film that is about to get a modern update.
As seen in the official trailer, Candyman follows visual artist Anthony McCoy and his partner gallery director Brianna Cartwright. The two move into a luxury condo in the newly gentrified Cabrini-Green neighborhood in Chicago. For as long as residents can remember, the housing projects in the neighborhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror. Anthony begins to use the Candyman legend in his art with violent consequences as the past meets the present.
The original Candyman was released in 1992 and became a cult classic with two sequels. This film is a direct sequel to the original film and stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Colman Domingo. It is directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, and DaCosta.
DaCosta’s fresh take on Candyman hits theaters on August 27, and Universal has released a new featurette for the film viewable below.
