‘Loki’: The Variant Identified as Sylvie Laufeydottir

So Lady Loki has taken on a new name — Sylvie Laufeydottir!

The mystery Variant from the end of episode 2 revealed her true identity to be Lady Loki using the alias Sylvie Laufeydottir. Now, there’s a lot to unpack here, so buckle up.

For now, Sylvie Laufeydottir is Loki in his female form, but for a reason we hopefully find out soon she’s changed her name to Sylvie. The name Sylvie carries some weight in Marvel lore, too, however. Her powers also resemble that of Amora the Enchantress, another powerful Asgardian sorceress.

Where it stands, Sylvie is a mash up of not one, not two, but three characters: Loki, Amora, and Sylvie Lushton.

Amora the Enchantress
Marvel

Amora the Enchantress has been around for decades in the Marvel comics. An Asgardian villain typically seen going head-to-head with Thor, her magical prowess is one of the greatest in Asgard. Through the years she’s been quite the problem for Thor and Asgard as well as the Avengers.

Enchantress is known for her alluring powers, using them to manipulate any who stand in her way. She’s cruel, cunning, and powerful, certainly one of the greatest villains Marvel has ever produced. The list of powers she does not have is probably shorter than of the ones she does possess, but alongside her proficient sorcery, she has superhuman abilities as well.

Sylvie Lushton

Sylvie Lushton, however, is more of an Enchantress copycat, but has deeper ties to Loki and his mischievous ways. Loki grants a young mortal, Sylvie Lushton, magical powers when Asgard relocates to Oklahoma after Ragnarok. Then, it comes to light that Sylvie may have never been a mortal at all, but is entirely Loki’s creation to aid in the destruction of the Avengers.

Marvel

Feeling a connection to Asgard and its magic, Sylvie takes on the title of Enchantress and tries to team with the Young Avengers. But Sylvie has no training with her powers, making her volatile and unfit to join with the Avengers. They don’t accept her and she joins the Young Masters instead, a group akin to Amora’s group the Masters years before. Amora finds out about Sylvie touting her name in the end, and Sylvie is then banished. She hasn’t been seen since.

For now, Sylvie Laufeydottir is Lady Loki under an alias. Adopted at a young age, just as Loki, Sylvie possesses many of his abilities. However, Sylvie’s main power is enchantment, and Loki himself doesn’t understand the mechanics behind this power, which does set her apart from him in ability. Whether this all sticks and she remains “a Loki” is up in the air with three episodes left in the season. This is Marvel, anything can happen.

Don’t forget to keep up with our ongoing coverage of Loki including episodic recaps, analyses, deep dives, and more! Episode 4 of Loki premieres Wednesday June, 30 at 12 a.m. PST exclusively on Disney+.
