It’s been exclusively revealed by Deadline that Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians) has joined the cast of Netflix and MRC’s upcoming feature modern retelling on the classic Jane Austen novel Persuasion. Golding will play Mr. Elliot opposite Dakota Johnson’s previously announced role of Anne Elliot.

With modern sensibilities and a forward thinking view of the world, Anne Elliot takes pride in her intellect and patience. Anne lives with her snobbish family on the brink of bankruptcy. Anne is faced with a difficult choice when the suitor she denied, Captain Frederick Wentworth, steps back into her life to go toe to toe for Anne’s hand against Golding’s character who is the classic Austen foil. In the novel, Mr. Elliot is heir to Kellynch Hall and is on the search for a new bride following the death of his late wife, but Anne questions the smooth talking Elliot’s motives. We’re unsure how this modern reimagining will address the character, but we can’t wait to find out.

Persuasion is written by Ron Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow. Stay tuned here for more details on the film as they become available.
