New Promo for ‘Prodigal Son’ Season 2 Promises More Murder and Drama

Share:

Welcome to the culmination of Prodigal Son season two news week! We’ve had new key art, a new synopsis, and now we close the week with a truly exciting new promo trailer from ET. with a first look at what is in store for Malcolm, his family, and the NYPD team. Check out the trailer below and then read on for a breakdown of the 46 second long preview.

First up we get a voiceover from Malcolm with shots of someone, perhaps a young Malcolm or Martin, playing the piano. Obviously we can’t say for certain but maybe we’re going to take a deeper dive into Martin’s life before he became a notorious serial killer.

“I used to think I was nothing like my father. The truth is, my father is a part of me.” They’d be wise words that show some growth for Malcolm, if not for the fact they overlap a very sinister shot of Malcolm holding a knife that reflects back a very sinister, Martin-esque smile.

Prodigal Son is spectacular at delivering odd, out of the box murders for NYPD Lieutenant Gil Arroyo and his team to solve and it looks like we can expect just that in season 2. Edrisa literally removes the head of a glamorously dressed murder victim, with the perfect, not too cheesy one-liner, “Hold on to your heads.” We have no doubt the writer’s room will be hitting us with perfect one-liners like that all season long!

Malcolm holds police tape up for Dani to walk under. We’ll pause here to note the sucker Dani is holding, so maybe Malcolm is in gift-giving mode again at some point. If so, this means he also goes back to his psychologist (Yay for Malcolm taking care of his mental health!).

The most interesting elements of the promo are these: a series of shots, clearly from inside the Whitly home. Someone dressed in dark slacks and a yellow rain coat scrubs a floor clean. The same person lays out plastic. Everywhere. Perhaps the most chilling is the single shot of a saw. What. Is. Going. On. Will Malcolm and Ainsley attempt to cover up Ainsley’s shocking actions at the end of season one? The synopsis tells us Malcolm must ” take care of her and protect his mother, JESSICA WHITLY (Bellamy Young), from a secret that could tear the family apart all over again.” This would be one heck of a secret for them to try to keep.

Then there’s the shots with Martin and Malcolm busting through a brick wall. Martin is heard saying, “My boy, he needs me. I’m gonna be free.” Will he be taken and is thus free? Or does he escape prison altogether? The frames make it appear that Malcolm might be rescuing, but there is truly no telling when it comes to Prodigal Son.

We’re also treated to a host of familiar faces including Edrisa, Jessica, Ainsley, Gil, and JT (why does it look like JT is about to be arrested?!)

Whatever happens this season, it’s clear fans are in for one wild ride. Prodigal Son returns Tuesday, January 12 on FOX at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. C.
