‘The Lion King’ Sequel Set With Director Barry Jenkins

Ah, and the Circle of Life comes full circle…kind of. Deadline has reported that a sequel to the 2019 The Lion King is currently in the works at Walt Disney Studios. Barry Jenkins, acclaimed director of Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk, is set to direct the upcoming film.

Though there are currently no plot details, we do know the sequel will continue with the photo-realistic technology used in the 2019 rendition of The Lion King. The new film will reportedly delve deeper into the stories of the characters, including an origin story for Mufasa. Disney has not confirmed whether any of the cast from the 2019 version will reprise their roles for the sequel.

While there’s still much that’s unknown about the project, we can’t wait to see Jenkins’ vision for the film! You can stream the 2019 The Lion King now on Disney+.
