The wait for season 3 of Syfy’s popular supernatural drama Wynonna Earp is far from over, but Earpers got a first look at the new season, and a pivotal new character.
TVLine dropped the bombshell earlier today that Reign’s Megan Follows has been cast in the recurring role of Michelle “Momma” Earp, mother of sisters Willa, Wynonna, and Waverly. She was revealed to be alive, previously presumed dead, in the final moments of season 2, only seen from the back as Wynonna approached her.
“Fine, you were right. Bulshar’s back,” Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) said to the unseen woman. “Now what do we do about it… Momma?”
The revelation shocked fans and set up the question: Who will play Momma Earp?
Casting ideas were bandied about on social media after the end of season 2, with names like Lucy Lawless of Xena: Warrior Princess fame being mentioned as possibles for the matriarch of the Earp clan.
Follows is coming to Wynonna Earp having just completed a four-year run as Queen Catherine de Medici in the CW’s historical drama Reign about the early life of Mary, Queen of Scots.

“Megan Follows is one of Canada’s most beloved and versatile performers, and we are beyond thrilled to have her onboard for such an iconic role,” showrunner Emily Andras said about the casting. “Her ferocity and fearlessness will fit in fabulously with the rest of our phenomenal cast.”
Momma Earp will likely play a pivotal role in Wynonna’s journey to destroy the Earp curse and its originator Bulshar in season 3, set to premiere later this year.
In addition to Reign, Follows’ previous TV credits include CBC’s Heartland, the miniseries World Without End, CBS’ Second Chances, A&E’s Longmire and the title role in the 1985 miniseries Anne of Green Gables.
