Interview: Richard Speight, Jr. Talks Returning to Nashville for Exit/In Show This Month

0

Richard Speight, Jr. is returning to his roots when he heads to Nashville later this month to play the Exit/In, a local music venue that he grew up going to. Rich is there as Dick Jr. & The Volunteers, playing alongside some of his friends, including Rob Benedict, Jason Manns, Billy Moran, Mark Sheppard, and Emma Fitzpatrick. It’s also the first time Mark Sheppard has performed with them in Nashville.

The crew is in town for Creation Entertainment’s The Road So Far… The Road Ahead Tour, a Supernatural-themed convention in which they’re staples on the convention circuit. Speight will regularly perform with Benedict and Moran’s band, Louden Swain, at the conventions, and will often times hold independent gigs in the cities as well.

Such is the case for Nashville, and they have a show on Thursday, October 30. Since it’s the day before Halloween, Rich promises some fun Halloween “face paint” and the holiday being woven into their show.

It’s going to be a fun show with some of your favorite people, and it’s guaranteed to be a great time. The show is 18+. General Admission Tickets are $40 (plus fees). You can purchase your ticket here.

I talked to Rich about the show and what fans can expect – read it below!

Nerds and Beyond: You grew up in the Nashville area. What is it like to return to perform at the Exit/In with some of your friends?

Richard Speight, Jr.: It’s phenomenal, because I’m not just from Nashville, but my musical tastes were honed at the Exit/In. I used to go see bands play there all the time, and I still have a live recording of a band called The Stakes on New Year’s Eve in 1995 that I’ve had digitized and play on every New Year’s Eve when I’m at a party. They play “Auld Lang Syne,” that I play all the time, every year. So it’s just a part of my existence, and it’s part of Nashville’s fingerprint. It’s not the touristy area; it’s in the area where people who love music go, and that makes it unique and special.

Staff Photographer – Holly Diane

Nerds and Beyond: What can fans expect from this set? Is there anything you can tease about the show?

Richard Speight, Jr.: Yeah, for starters, can we talk about face paint? I mean, we’re all dolling up for Halloween. We are leaning in in a big way. And, we’ve done this lineup before, and what works great is that I’ve taken guys who are acoustic, and I’ve made them electric. Jason Manns, who’s always been the guy by himself with the guitar, now has a full band. Rob Benedict, doing his solo stuff, has a full band. It’s just a rock show from stem to stern. Plus, we’ll do a couple of Halloween nods musically, and we’re all going to be in full makeup and leaning into the entire holiday, so hopefully the fans will do the same, and we’ll have a kick ass Halloween party Nashville style.

Nerds and Beyond: Finally, what is something about your show that you hope people walk away feeling or thinking after seeing you perform?

Richard Speight, Jr.: I built my entire musical career on the concept of free beer. That’s why I learned to play guitar. That’s why I started a band. It seemed like a great way to be invited to the party that you might not have been included in otherwise when I was a young man, because maybe I wasn’t cool enough, but hell, if I’m the bass player, then you’ve got to let me in. That’s what I want. I want people to come and go, “I’m invited to this party. I am part of this world, and these are my people, and we’re going to rip it up.” Obviously, the beer is not free. Exit/In is going to charge for that. [laughs] But the experience should be that of a bunch of friends having a backyard banger, and it should be fun, stem to stern. I’m not trying to make a statement. I’m not trying to teach a lesson. I just want everybody to have a great time.

Don’t forget – You can purchase your ticket here.

Interview: Yasuhiro Nightow and the Production Team Talk ‘TRIGUN STARGAZE’ at NYCC

The final phase of the latest anime remake of Trigun is almost here. New York Comic Con attendees who were lucky enough to sit in on the Trigun panel this past weekend had a chance to catch the world premiere of the first two episodes of the long-awaited TRIGUN STARGAZE. Later, Nerds & Beyond sat down with the original author of the manga series, Yasuhiro Nightow, Masako Sato (Director, TRIGUN STARGAZE), Yota Shirasu (Producer, Studio Orange), and Yoshihiro Watanabe (Producer, Studio Orange) to discuss this upcoming second chapter of the adaptation.

TRIGUN STAMPEDE, which premiered in 2023, introduced Trigun to a brand-new generation of anime fans. The manga dates back to 1995, while the original anime adaptation began in 1998. I asked the creator, Yasuhiro Nightow, what this experience has been like for him over the past few years.

Nightow went on to say that he has wished the best of happiness to be brought to everyone every time that Trigun has been adapted. He explained that he has worked closely with all of the staff who worked on the prior adaptations, along with the current ones, and he believes that they all worked very sincerely to adapt the story of Trigun while also making it their own. Nightow said that he knows how much has been done to create these stories, and he hopes to see them succeed.

Masako Sato steps into the role of director for TRIGUN STARGAZE, and when asked about how she came to be involved with the project, she explained that she was brought on board before TRIGUN STAMPEDE was even announced. Sato was surprised to hear that Trigun was being adapted again.

Studio Orange is known for its captivating 3DCG animation. When asked about working as a director with this particular animation style, Sato shared that it was a very sensational, strong learning experience. She reflected on working with a team of many talented staff, utilizing what they do best to what they could do together as a group, and how to draw the line for things she felt were necessary to be done. Sato felt that working on STARGAZE really extended her skills as a director.

For me personally, TRIGUN STAMPEDE gave me a newfound appreciation for the use of 3DCG in anime. I asked Studio Orange what kind of new technology developments and advancements happened behind the scenes after STAMPEDE and/or during the creation of STARGAZE. Yota Shirasu reflected on the intensive action of TRIGUN STAMPEDE and the creativity of Studio Orange’s animators in making those fantastic actions work. After STAMPEDE, the studio worked on a show called Leviathan, in which they focused on how to express characters in more natural movements (such as walking or even in conversations), including very subtle expressions — both facial and body language-wise. Studio Orange feels that its work on Leviathan has lived on in STARGAZE, and those experiences have enriched its ability to produce character expressions.

When asked about what challenges Studio Orange was presented with during the development of STARGAZE, Shirasu explained that while STARGAZE is a continuation of the storytelling from STAMPEDE, it’s also a new show. It has a new tone of storytelling. Studio Orange tried different approaches to accomplish this, along with utilizing feedback from Nightow during production. The studio implemented both new elements, and existing elements from STAMPEDE.

Finally, everyone was posed with one simple, final question: If you had to put your trust in one character to help you survive the Trigun universe, who would it be?

Sato chose Nicholas D. Wolfwood (and I was inclined to agree myself). However, Nightow had to go with Vash the Stampede (“Because if I choose Wolfwood, he might actually give me the ultimate choice to actually cut me out. So in that case, I would want to make sure that Vash will do everything to keep me alive”). Shirasu, on the other hand, isn’t putting his trust in either of them. Rather, he went with the one and only — Meryl Stryfe. Because even though she doesn’t have any superpowers or super strength, she’s doing everything in her power (“To me, it feels very human and trustworthy”).

TRIGUN STARGAZE will premiere on Crunchyroll in January 2026.

0

Manga Mavericks Books, a new North American manga publisher, announced two newly licensed titles during its panel at New York Comic Con.

Horon of the Closed Country, Volume 1 (by Sen)

What the Forest Deity takes will never return.

A forest deity hides and protects an ancient land from foreign enemies, but in order to do so, sacrifices must be made. In recent times, the forest deity has been encroaching more on humankind, with only people with special powers, diviners, able to drive them back. One child has the power of these diviners, but their memory has been stolen from them, leaving only the aforementioned warning. An unlikely trio, each of whom has lost something dear to them, find themselves journeying to unravel the secrets of the forest deity. Little do they know that what they have lost, the frequent appearance of the deity, and the need for sacrifices are all connected …

This complete indie series was originally published across four volumes in Japan, each of which will be released at A5 size (5.83″ x 8.27″) by Manga Mavericks Books. Available Early Winter 2026 (Digital), Summer 2026 (Print). For readers 13+.

Sen provided the following message for NYCC attendees:

“Horon of the Closed Country came from my desire to draw the kind of fantasy story that I would have loved to read as a child. It’s an incredible feeling to know that an English version is coming and that people worldwide will be able to read it! It’s as if the world is expanding right before my eyes! I can’t wait to see the story that I dedicated to myself as a child gain a new life and new readers through the translation! I hope everyone enjoys it!”

Vol. 1 Print Pre-order, Vol. 1 Digital Pre-order

SINBAD, Volume 1 (by Atsuji Yamamoto)

Chart a course for adventure with Sinbad!

Sinbad is a young man with bravery, agility, and a strong sense of justice. Despite this, his looks not only make it impossible for him to get a date, but also cause him to stand out from his fellow villagers and even his family. He’s long known that he’s different from everyone else, but it’s only after he helps a girl recover her lost crystal ball that he gets a peek into his past and learns his feelings are true. To get the whole picture of his past, he’ll need to set out on a life-changing journey, where foes and danger await.

SINBAD, which was originally published in Japan in 1989, is a complete series collected across 4 volumes. Each will be released in A5 size (5.83″ x 8.27″) by Manga Mavericks Books. Available Summer 2026 (Digital and Print). For readers 13+.

Atsuji Yamamoto provided the following message to share with NYCC attendees:

“I’m Atsuji Yamamoto, a Japanese manga artist. It’s a pleasure to meet you all. If you’ll allow me a brief self-introduction, my manga teacher was the artist of Lone Wolf and Cub, Mr. Kazuo Koike. I was one of the first students in 1977 to join his art technique school alongside Rumiko Takahashi. I was still a teenager back then, and now I’m 66 years old.

To have an English version of my manga Sinbad announced at New York Comic Con is a huge honor. SINBAD takes place within the Arabian Nights storyline that I’m sure everyone is familiar with. In Arabian Nights, there’s a tale of Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, and Aladdin is Chinese. Though this isn’t the case in the movies, haha.

This manga is the result of me wondering what would happen if the character Sinbad were actually Asian as well. I read a Japanese translation of the Arabian Nights for research purposes, but in the end, the story and characters in the story became my own original concepts, wholly different from the original. I truly hope that everyone will enjoy this story, and I wish for nothing but the best for all of you. Thank you.”

New York Comic Con 2025: Crunchyroll Launches New Manga App

Crunchyroll is becoming a one-stop shop for all things anime and manga.

The new manga app, which is separate from the flagship Crunchyroll app, launched on October 9, including titles from multiple publishers. AlphaPolis, COMPASS, Square Enix, VIZ Media, and Yen Press all have titles available, additional partners like Shueisha and J-Novel Club will follow.

Subscription options vary, with different tiers for the manga app. Access to the manga app is included for Ultimate members ($15.99/month). Prices are as follows:

Crunchyroll Fan + Manga – $11.99 USD / $15.49 CAD per month (includes Manga add-on at $4.00 USD / $5.50 CAD)

Crunchyroll Mega Fan + Manga – $15.49 USD / $17.49 CAD per month (includes Manga add-on at $3.50 USD / $5.00 CAD)

The experience is ad-free regardless of subscription tier. Mega Fan and Ultimate include discounts at the Crunchyroll store, too!

We were able to get a hands-on experience with the new app at New York Comic Con, and its clean interface was the first notable feature. If you have a subscription tier that allows for multiple profiles, each of them transfers over to the new app, allowing each user to curate their own reading lists, download chapters for offline reading, and get personalized recommendations.

As someone who has multiple apps for different titles, I was thrilled to see some of my currently reading series all under one digital roof (The Apothecary Diaries and Haikyu!! in one place!). There are three manga readers in my house, so the fact that I will no longer be spoiled by reading a chapter after someone else is also a major plus for this app. Gone are the days of seeing the last page first and groaning about why we couldn’t just scroll it back to the beginning.

Reading is unlimited with the subscription, and no additional fees for newly released chapters (you don’t have to buy coins or points or whatever other variation of micro-purchase moniker). It’s simplified finding ways to read the manga behind your favorite anime, with only more to come.

The Crunchyroll manga app is now available on iOS, Android, and the web.

The wait is finally almost over — TRIGUN STARGAZE is officially due to premiere in January 2026! Fans that attended New York Comic Con at the Javits Center in New York City this weekend were lucky enough to catch the world premiere of the first two episodes.

The panel, which took place on Friday, October 10th on the Empire Stage, had several special guests, including the original author of the manga series, Yasuhiro Nightow, Masako Sato (Director of TRIGUN STARGAZE), Yota Shirasu (Producer, Studio Orange), and Yoshihiro Watanabe (Producer, Studio Orange).

Following a Q&A session, the lights in the auditorium went dark, and attendees went quiet with excitement as the first two episodes of STARGAZE were shown. TRIGUN STARGAZE is the second and final phase of TRIGUN STAMPEDE, which serves as a remake (rather than a continuation) of the 1998 anime series, and it’s produced by studio Orange. STARGAZE takes place two and a half years after STAMPEDE.

Watch the new trailer below (and yes, the entire audience at New York Comic Con did indeed erupt into a chorus of screaming and cheering the moment Milly appeared).
