‘Slow Dance’ Review: Rainbow Rowell’s Perfectly Imperfect Route to a Happy Ending

0

It’s not always straightforward—finding your happy ending.

(But don’t give up.)

Rainbow Rowell’s latest book is almost here. Slow Dance follows the story of Shiloh and Cary, two childhood best friends who grew up and grew apart. Now in their thirties, the pair hasn’t talked for fourteen years. Cary’s in the Navy, and Shiloh’s divorced with two kids. An old friend’s hometown wedding brings the two of them back together as they retrace the steps of the past and find something else along the way.

Jam-packed with nostalgia, thoughtful introspection, pitch-perfect comedy, and the raw, honest truth of life in your 30s — Slow Dance isn’t your typical romantic tale. In a shelf full of new-age romance books that feel like the literary embodiment of a TikTok filter, Slow Dance is the well-loved VHS tape you find buried in the attic when you go home to visit your parents. It’s the warm, sometimes awkward, but overall utterly fond feeling that unravels in your chest. This book revels in the grainy film, the dusty edges, and every perfectly imperfect take that makes Shiloh and Cary’s story feel uniquely honest and real.

Shiloh and Cary are unapologetically flawed (and boy is that refreshing). They’re not kids who grew up and suddenly knew all of the answers — they’re two adults still trying to figure out where they’re going now that they’re wading into the deep end. Rowell cuts out distinct, defined silhouettes for her leads as the story fluidly takes readers between their teenage years and the current day. This concept works well to balance the book’s quick pacing while still providing ample backstory and character development.

Slow Dance is, without a doubt, a quintessential best friends-to-lovers story, one that spans decades of time, misunderstandings, mistakes, relationships, heartbreaks, and second chances. Shiloh and Cary’s tale isn’t easy, and it’s certainly not simple. Even as they find their way back into one another’s lives, Rowell takes care not to let them forget the reality of where they both are in life, the real obstacles that they must face in order to move forward. Finally, it bears mentioning that fans of Rowell’s work will relish the author’s trademark witty way with words throughout — a writing voice that truly thrives in this setting.

Slow Dance hits shelves on July 30.

Review: The Decemberists at The Rialto in Tucson, Arizona

0

The Decemberists are currently on tour, promoting their newest album As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again. Nerds & Beyond was fortunate to attend their show in Tucson, Arizona on July 19th.

The Rialto is an iconic venue, hosting musicians, comedians, and many other forms of entertainment in a spacious and comfortable environment.

The opening act, a rock group from Chicago called Ratboys, pumped up the crowd with their set. Attendees were enjoying their set, dancing and cheering for them after every song. Their lead vocalist, Julia, has a unique and entrancing voice that kept everyone in the room captivated.

Ratboys promoted their latest album, The Window. Ratboys are: Julia Steiner, guitar and vocals, Dave Sagan, guitar, Sean Neumann bass and vocals, and Marcus Nuccio, drums. You can find them wherever you stream your music.

The Decemberists opened with a low-key set of a few, mostly acoustic songs. They then kicked up the energy, adding more and more musicians to the stage until the atmosphere was that of an expertly crafted jam session. Lead singer Colin Meloy worked the crowd and made time for humorous asides with his fellow bandmates.

The crowd was energized, the band was on form, and it was a highly enjoyable set with songs both new and old.

If you enjoy rock with an indie/folk twist, organs, brass instruments, and a lead singer with a voice that sounds just as perfect in person as it does on record, seek out The Decemberists.

The Decemberists can be found wherever you stream your music, and here.

Photos: The Dangerous Summer, Bad Luck, Rosecoloredworld, and New Anthem in Toronto

Opening the show in Toronto for the Coming Back to Earth tour, headlined by The Dangerous Summer, was a small local pop-punk band called New Anthem. Based out of Newmarket Ontario, they are typically a full 4-piece outfit, however, they were down by 2 last night. The singer/guitarist duo gave everything they had for 20 minutes, playing an entirely acoustic set.

Rosecoloredworld, a pop-punk duo from LA (after almost not making it to the venue at all due to a van breakdown), came onto the stage with the energy of wildfire. Addison (guitar, vocals) and Rae (vocals), along with a touring bass player and drummer, were taking no excuses from the crowd for a lack of energy.  Their gritty melodic songs were great for getting the energy up. Playing a number of their original tracks and then folding in a fun Radiohead cover of “Creep” midway through played really well to the fans who were already in attendance.

The third band on the ticket was New York’s quartet Bad Luck. They tore up the small stage at the Velvet Underground with energy to spare with their quintessential New York (East Coast, grungy punk/rock) sound. The crowd was starting to turn up in earnest at this stage – and they were enjoying dancing and jumping around to this energetic group.

The Dangerous Summer capped off the night in splendid fashion. The quartet of alt-rockers, made up of AJ Perdomo (vocals/bass), Josh Witenshaw (guitar), Christian Zawacki (drums), and touring guitarist Marcus Leopard, took to the small club stage to cheering and screaming from the fans who were ready for AJ and Company to hit the stage. Founded in Ellicott City, MD, the band has been active for nearly 20 years. The setlist, 15 songs, was a very good mix of old and new, including 4 songs off their most recent release Gravity, while also incorporating a good selection of their first album (Reach for the Sun) – and everything in between. They concluded their set with the encore, a cover of The Killer’s hit song “Mr. Brightside” to a delighted room full of fans, who sang along from start to finish.

Small venue shows offer something different to a fan, they offer the closeness to the artists, and the intimacy of a show that can include a 20-minute acoustic set to a jumping, sweaty mass of bodies a little later in the evening. At the end of the show, a line of fans eagerly waited at the merch stand, ready to get selfies and talk to the band they came to see, who, tending their own inventory, were all more than happy to comply with meeting and greeting all their fans.
