‘Nancy Drew’: Our Theories for Season 3

0

With less than a month remaining until the return of Nancy Drew for season 3, speculation about the plot is ramping up as a result of trailer releases and new synopses. Much like the titular sleuth, fans have been connecting dots and making predictions for the new season. We here at Nerds & Beyond have been in full theory mode as well, and to get excited for the new season, I’ll be breaking down the information we know so far about the shenanigans our Drew Crew will get themselves into in season 3.

Note: this article will contain spoilers for the first two seasons, so be warned before diving in!

A Great, Great (Great, Great … you get the idea) Aunt of a Problem

The end of season 2 made it clear that Temperance Hudson was about to become the “big bad” of season 3, and the information we’ve been teased with so far confirms this. Temperance and her powers have been held back for seven generations, so it stands to reason she has had time to nurse her grudges and plot her revenge. But her true motivations are still unclear. Does she just want revenge for her treatment at the hands of the Women in White? Or is she planning to resurrect the group for her own purposes? Our season description only hints at a “dark agenda” for Temperance and that she will be a “season-long” enemy for the Drew Crew and Nancy in particular. No matter her intentions, she definitely means business and that can only spell trouble for Horseshoe Bay and the Drew Crew.

Deadly Predictions

Temperance doesn’t just come bearing ill will towards Horseshoe Bay. She also comes with several prophecies about the Drew Crew and Ryan Hudson, who we see in the trailer watching Temperance as she tells the group what she knows. The three verbal predictions we hear and the visuals accompanying them:

  • “One of you will be the other’s demise”: Bess being thrown against the wall by mysterious women in white dresses.
  • “One of you will betray your true love”: George and Nick under a trance holding electronics in a bathtub.
  • “One of you will lose your heart”: Nancy and Ace kissing, only for Nancy to pull away with a confused look on her face. This may also play into the first episode, which is titled “The Warming of a Frozen Heart.”

Of course, the visuals accompanying the predictions could be an attempt to throw off viewers. But the cards alone give us a hint that turmoil is ahead for the Drew Crew. One of our writers, Haley, had this to say about the cards we can see in the trailer and their relation to the Drew Crew.

“Well, widow obviously indicates loss and grief. The other cards being upside down can signify a block before the card is fulfilled or the opposite effect of what the card means. The griffin is a symbol that was important to the ancient gods and it signifies wisdom, protection (like a spirit guide), and enlightenment. With it upside down, maybe someone is going to get in the way of the group and try to break them up. That would explain the pact being upside down as well … they’re definitely going to be tested to the limit as a group.”

The cards we see onscreen match the ominous predictions and parts of the season description, and interestingly, the fourth card is intentionally obscured by Temperance’s hand. Even more intriguingly, while we see Temperance put down four tarot cards, we only hear three predictions. What is that fourth prediction, and why is it too big a spoiler to reveal it in a trailer? Overall, it seems that the Drew Crew will be tested more than they ever have before.

Bess and the Occult

It seems that poor Bess just can’t catch a break. After finding love with Odette, who was trapped in George’s body, she was forced to give her up forever as Odette decided to hide herself away to give George the chance to live her life. As the season begins, Bess “becomes drawn into the long-lost practices of her occultist ancestors.” What is intriguing about this is Bess’ possible connections to the Women in White. After all, if Temperance Hudson was involved in the group, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for a Marvin to have been involved since we know Agnes Marvin was directly involved in the cover-up of Odette’s death.

This also ties to the season 3 trailer, where we see Bess with the women in dresses that match the photos we’ve seen of the Women in White. Could she have something to do with bringing back the original Women in White, or accidentally helping Temperance create a second group? And is Bess’ attempt to discover more about the occult an effort to bring Odette back? It’s clear that Bess’ journey this season will have big implications for Temperance’s plans and may set up a witchy journey for her as well.

New Characters, New Problems

As usual, Nancy’s not just dealing with the supernatural. A serial killer is targeting Horseshoe Bay in an attempt to get to Nancy specifically. Why is the killer going after Nancy? The season description teases a connection to Temperance and the Hudson clan, so it could be someone with a Hudson-specific axe to grind. Knowing Nancy Drew, we shouldn’t assume this serial killer is a human at all.

But there’s another interesting new character arriving on the show: an FBI profiler who will reportedly have some romantic sparks with Nancy. If I know anything about this show, it’s that no character is who they say they are initially. Could it be someone from The Road Back trying to get close to Nancy? After all, the shadowy criminal organization with ties to both Ace and Nancy is still out there. And more importantly: how will this new love interest shake up our existing relationships?

Some Ships Are Sailing, Some Are Sinking

As leading lady Kennedy McMann said herself, this season is all about romance! Let’s have a quick “state of the ships” discussion, shall we?

Colin Bentley/The CW

Fanson (George and Nick): All appears to be well on the surface with George and Nick, having just gotten engaged. Nick is building his business to help the at-risk youth of Horseshoe Bay, and George has her life back due to Odette taking a step back. But George still has her supernaturally shortened lifespan to deal with, giving her just 10 years to live. That would certainly put a damper on wedding planning, and with those ominous predictions, Fanson is going to have a lot to deal with this season.

Colin Bentley/The CW

Amace (Amanda and Ace): While the two were just leaving on a romantic trip together in the season 2 finale, it’s clear that their happiness won’t last long. With season 3 starting just one week after the finale, it seems the two will be back in Horseshoe Bay sooner than expected. Ace doesn’t know about Nancy’s new feelings towards him, but his remark that he felt like he was leaving something behind by going on his trip with Amanda indicates that spark may not be one-sided. This could spell doom for Amace, especially if Gil tries to come between them.

Colin Bentley/The CW

Nace (Nancy and Ace): I don’t know about you, but when I have hyper-realistic dreamscape experiences where I almost kiss one of my best friends, it changes the relationship. While Nancy may not have gotten to tell Ace how she feels in the finale, it remains to be seen if she will open up to him when we return. After all, Nancy’s not the best at putting her heart out there, and knowing he left with Amanda will likely cause her to shut down emotionally. But the trailer teases at least one very steamy scene between the two, which begs the question: Is it real? A dream? Supernaturally manufactured? What will happen when Ace meets the mysterious profiler also competing for Nancy’s heart? Hang in there, Nace shippers — I anticipate the slowest of slow burns.

Colin Bentley/The CW

Namura (Nancy and Tamura): Sparks were flying after Nancy’s brush with the lust dress revealed Tamura may have feelings for Nancy. We know that he had a fiancé who canceled their wedding but almost nothing about what happened or what Tamura’s story is beyond that tiny piece of information. With very little backstory to go on, there’s so much more to explore with both Tamura as a character and as a potential relationship. Nancy’s going to have a hard time deciding between her many options, that’s for sure.

Carson and …?: Poor Carson Drew hasn’t been able to catch a break in the romance department lately. But apparently this season Carson will, “spark a romance that evolves him both personally and professionally.” Could this be a relationship with District Attorney Rosario, who we first met in season 2, episode 12? The two clearly had sparks then, and it would fit the description. Regardless, I hope Carson gets to enjoy himself with minimal chasing after his wayward daughter (right, Nancy?).

Bess and Someone Who Is Alive: The only person unluckier in love than Carson is Bess. Bess can really only go up from here in terms of romance. After her quasi-relationship with Odette ended at the end of season 2, we saw Bess attempt to move on by putting herself out there on dating apps. After breaking up with Lisbeth and losing Odette, Bess deserves to find someone who adores her … and is also ideally a living breathing human person who is not trapped in her best friend’s body. Here’s hoping season 3 gives our favorite kleptomaniac someone who will buy her all the shiny things her heart desires and treat her like the queen she is.

Shane Harvey/The CW

Ryan and Val: Last but certainly not least, we have Ryan and Valentina Samuels. When we last left Ryan and Val, Val was leaving Horseshoe Bay for her own protection after it was revealed that she was helping the Drew Crew take down the Hudsons. Now that Everett is behind bars, will she make her way back to Ryan?

Shane Harvey/The CW

This Is My Dad … And This Is My Dad

Finally, now that the secret about Nancy’s origins as a Hudson has been revealed to the public, the Drew-Hudson trio of Nancy, Carson, and Ryan will need to figure out how to move forward together. This will likely be complicated by the fact that Ryan is now living with Nancy and Carson. If Nancy Drew wanted to pivot to a My Two Dads-style sitcom focusing on Carson raising Nancy and attempting to teach Ryan how to be an adult, I would champion it. Ryan will reportedly “find himself tempted by his previous life as the morally compromised scion to an empire,” and something tells me Carson will have his hands full managing both Ryan and Nancy this season.

What are your Season 3 theories? Let us know in the comments! Nancy Drew returns on October 8 at 9 p.m. ET on The CW. You can find our coverage of the series here.

‘9-1-1’ Recap: Season 5, Episode 1 “Panic”

0

The time has finally come! The season 5 premiere of 9-1-1 is here and it kicks off a three-episode event! Following a ransomware attack on the City of Los Angeles, the 118 find themselves in the middle of all the chaos. Meanwhile, Athena reopens some old wounds involving the realtor serial rapist, Eddie has a health scare and Maddie is gradually dealing with her postpartum depression.

Keep reading to find out all the best moments from the season 5 premiere of 9-1-1, “Panic.”

Elephants, Giraffes, and Monkeys, Oh My!

Jack Zeman /FOX

It’s been known that the 118 would be dealing with zoo animals on the loose since filming began, and since then fans have been anxious to see what would happen. And the beginning of the episode immediately clues fans in. We open on a deserted Hollywood Boulevard, by the TCL Chinese Theatre, the Dolby Theatre, El Capitan, Hard Rock Cafe. Cars are abandoned, paper on the streets. As the 118 makes their way through the street, they start passing some zoo animals. Birds, emu, a giraffe, monkeys on the Chinese Theater, wolves running around the Hollywood and Highland Shopping Center, camels in the center, and an elephant that knocks over a Starline Tours ticket booth.

“I really thought this year was gonna be different.”

The episode then takes fans a week prior, and that’s the last we see of the 118 with the zoo animals, at least for this episode. It’s sad, because I really wanted more, but hopefully this just means that the next episode we’ll see a lot more of it.

Maddie’s Postpartum Worries

Maddie seems to be doing a little better, now that she has Chimney to help. Maddie’s oversleeping, which means that Chim gets to have some breakfast with Jee-Yun. She’s seeing a therapist, planning lunch dates with Josh. Chimney, being the caring boyfriend and father of her daughter, knows how tired Maddie has been lately ever since they switched her to the duloxetine. He offers her help but Maddie tells him it’s not his job, though making sure she and Jee are happy and healthy is his most important job. Chimney’s not sure he knows how to not worry. Maddie promises she’ll talk to the doctor.

Maddie has overslept once again, as she wakes to a call from Josh about lunch. Luckily she’s running behind schedule and totally missing her doctor’s appointment. Josh briefly mentions the self-aware cell phones, then the airport was it and now it’s the apocalypse. Maddie has no idea what’s going on and after getting off the phone, she turns on the news and tells baby Jee that daddy’s going to be pretty busy.

The Ransomware Attack

What started off as a somewhat harmless string of alerts turned into something much bigger. The 118 got alerts for an earthquake, tsunami, mudslide. Even though they don’t feel anything and the bell at the firehouse isn’t going off. And evidently, Hen is calling 9-1-1.

“It’s like our greatest hits.”

Meanwhile, the call center is getting hit with 9-1-1 calls that are mostly accidental. Josh assures the staff that they didn’t get hacked. It’s due to a phone provider. Much of the call center deals with emergency calls that aren’t really emergency calls, until one woman who called a couple times on accident calls with a real emergency this time: Her GPS went haywire and she ended up driving into the water and she’s sinking, fast. Luckily, the 118 come to her rescue, with the help of May who was on the call with the woman, though this is only the beginning of the attack.

Taylor figures out that the navigation app’s last update was two weeks ago, which means that there was no bug and the company lied. Karen, when at a get together at Karen and Bobby’s, figures it was a ransomware attack, courtesy of a guy she knows that works at that navigation company, GoGo Anywhere. Multiple other states have been hit. Denny and Harry come out to the dining room to tell everyone their game just froze and it won’t even load. Cell phone carriers, GPS navigation, and now video games? What’s next?

“The end of the world as we know it.”

The ransomware attack continues, this time it’s at Air Traffic Control at LAX. The staff start to lose contact with the planes, and all radar is lost. One of the planes comes back online, though there’s still no radio. According to the radar, the plane is on a collision course for the tower. It’s headed right for them. Everyone in the tower braces for impact, but it never comes. They get confirmation that all the planes have landed at a nearby airport. After the 118 come to take care of a few of the staff, the computers start back up but, not for long. As a virtual slot machine comes up on the screen, with the words “YOU LOSE” and an automated voice saying to give him 25 million dollars if they want their system back.

As the court house is the latest to be attacked, Athena tries to follow Jeffery out into the streets. Traffic lights, cars, ATMs, are all going nuts. There’s multiple explosions on the street and everyone is running around in a panic.

“Insanity.”

Willing to lend a hand, the 118 helps out at the hospital, because boy do they need it. Soon, the entire city experiences a blackout.

“Because of course.”

The Return of the Realtor Rapist

The Realtor Rapist, Jeffery Hudson, from season 3 returns, as Athena and some of his victims testify in his trial. He even has a fan club, which is disgusting. Before the trial gets started, Jeffery fires his attorney, Lila, as he wants to represent himself. The victims are not too keen on being questioned by their abuser, though Athena tells them they are all stronger than he thinks. They soon get the news that the judge is going to allow Jeffery to represent himself, so Athena reminds the women that he can’t hurt them.

“Just stay strong.”

The lawyer, Decker, also tells them Jeffery filed a motion to suppress all evidence found at Studio Self Storage. Athena reminds him those trophies are all that they have linking Jeffery back to his victims. Not only is the judge considering this but she let him call his first witness: Athena.

Athena wakes up to a sound outside and she grabs her gun from the safe. She searches the house, but as she makes her way back to bed, Jeffery shows up and starts attacking Athena. Just as he shoots her, Athena wakes up. Later that day, Jeffery questions Athena about that night at the storage facility, and her being put on restrictive duty for misconduct. Athena justifies her actions, but he still wants the evidence to be suppressed as it was obtained from an illegal search by a “rogue cop with a history of misconduct.”

Continuing with the trial, everyone’s phones start going off, even though most phones were already off. Prisoners, led by guards, come into the courtroom, as the system said it was time to bring them up. The prisoners are fed up, as they want their day in court, and they start attacking. The guards get them quickly, though and the courtroom is cleared. However, Jeffery made it out during that brief stint of chaos. As everything is getting chaotic by security, Jeffery slips out and escapes.

At the police department, Athena breaks the news to two of the victims that Jeffery escaped. She suggests to them that they don’t go home. They should stick with friends, family, she’ll let them know when it’s safe. Meanwhile, Detective Ransone talks to Jeffery’s former lawyer, trying to get any information on his whereabouts. Athena comes into the room, asking about his “fan club” and if there’s any chance one or more of them would shelter him. Any of them in a heartbeat, Lila says.

Athena and Ransone split up to check out the girls from the fan club. However, they all seem to be clean. A little psychotic, but clean nonetheless.

Jeffery shows up to Lila’s house, still upset with how badly she treated him. He wonders if she has any cash and leads her outside, though before Jeffery has the chance to take her, Ransone shows up and arrests him. He tells Athena the great news and it’s like she can breathe once again. She calls the girls and tells them the news, though as she does, Lila comes up behind Ransone and slits his neck. She and Jeffery, who is in the police car, smile at each other.

“It’s over.”

That ending was NOT what I expected, and boy was it something. I’m still not over it. Knowing that this story isn’t over is giving me chills, but just what will happen when it’s found out what happened with Ransone and Jeffery and Lila? Hopefully we’ll find out more next week!

Eddie’s Health

While Eddie, Ana, and Christopher are looking at new suits for Ana’s sister’s baby’s christening, Eddie starts to feel a little woozy. Ana is with Christopher and Eddie collapses. She runs over to him as Christopher can be heard in the background calling out for his father. Ana tells someone to call 9-1-1.

At the hospital, Eddie is told by Dr. Salazar it wasn’t a heart attack, but it was a panic attack. Christopher brings up the fact that Eddie got shot and Ana tells Salazar about what happened. While the sniper is dead and Eddie’s not, the doctor suggests it’s repression.

“Or just moving forward.”

Salazar gives Eddie an informative pamphlet that outlines what he needs to do if he experiences any symptoms again and though he’s reluctant to take it, he ends up doing so.

“I don’t panic.”

While bringing patients into the ER, Eddie passes Dr. Salazar who is surprised to see him back to work so soon. Buck, ever the concerned best friend, looks at Eddie, who tells Salazar he’s good.

While helping out at the hospital, Buck looks back at Eddie and wonders about why that doctor asked if he was okay. Eddie tells him that he wasn’t feeling well so she checked him out. Buck is grilling him about having a heart attack, not having a heart attack, he’s just worried.

Insane Calls

Jack Zeman /FOX

Thanks to the ransomware attack, there were plenty of insane calls that the 118 went on that just has to be talked about. Check them out!

  • Following the near-impact at the control tower, two of the staff members start to have panic attacks. I almost thought it was going to be one of those moments where slowly it starts to get to everyone, but luckily, it was just those two. That is until the system is officially taken over by a hacker and the supervisor goes down.
  • A helicopter delivering an organ for a transplant at the hospital nearly makes it to the roof, though because of the blackout, the helicopter misses the pad because it’s too dark. The controls start going haywire, and soon, the helicopter is barely dangling from the roof.

What a way to begin the season and end this episode! Between the ransomware attack, the blackout and more, the City of Angels has its hands full. What will happen next? Catch new episodes of 9-1-1 on Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT on FOX, streaming free immediately after on the FOX NOW app and the next day on Hulu.

Dustin Milligan of ‘Schitt’s Creek’ and ‘Rutherford Falls’ to Executive Produce ‘Food for the Rest of Us’ Documentary

0

Copper Quartz media announced today that Dustin Milligan (Schitt’s Creek, Rutherford Falls) has boarded the documentary feature Food for the Rest of Us as Executive Producer. The film had its world premiere at DOXA and will also launch at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema for an in-theatre screening on World Food Day on October 16, 2021. A portion of the proceeds will go to Foodshare Toronto.

Milligan is a born and raised Yellowknifer, which drew Director Caroline Cox and co-producer Tiffany Ayalik to this partnership. It was Milligan’s reverence for Indigenous knowledge and environmental sustainability that was the catalyst in bringing these creative forces together.

Milligan shared his excitement about the documentary in a press release:

“Being born and raised in the North has been one of the greatest privileges of my life, in large part due to the teachings of reverence, respect, and connection to the land that so many Indigenous folks offered to settlers like me. The longer I have been away from home, the clearer it has become how crucial those teachings are to forging a sustainable future for the planet, and all the people on it. ‘Food for The Rest of Us’ is a deeply moving and important film that not only reinforces these essential truths, but dives deep into the repercussions of colonialism’s attempted erasure of them. The film celebrates the inspirational, marginalized heroes who humbly fight for a better future for us all, day by day, seed by seed.”

With Food For the Rest of Us, the audience meets inspiring young people across the continent leading a revolution to a better world through food: an Indigenous-owned, youth run organic farm in Hawaii; a Black urban grower in Kansas City; a female Kosher Butcher in Colorado working with the Queer Community; and an Inuit community in the Northwest Territories employing traditional harvesting methods to grow fresh produce in a community greenhouse. As climate change forces us to rethink our relationship to the land that feeds us, these food activists are using new ways of farming and living to fight back against oppressive systems and secure an alternative path to our culinary future.

Food for the Rest of Us was one of 10 Canadian projects selected for Telefilm Canada’s First Look USA and is a recipient of the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Fund. The film is gearing up for its in-theatre screening on World Food Day on October 16, 2021 at Hot Docs and is currently streaming nationwide exclusively for Hot Docs Members. You can purchase tickets here.

Food for the Rest of Us also has upcoming screenings at the Yellowknife International Film Festival in November and recently signed worldwide educational distribution with Collective Eyes out of Portland. An international community screening and impact campaign with the film kicks off later this Fall.

Food for the Rest of Us is directed by Caroline Cox, produced by Tiffany Ayalik and Caroline Cox and is Executive Produced by Stuart Henderson (90th Parallel Productions) and Dustin Milligan. Follow the documentary on Facebook and Instagram.
