Interview: Talking ‘Resident Alien’ With Alan Tudyk, Sara Tomko, Alice Wetterlund, and Corey Reynolds [EXCLUSIVE]

Just when you think that pesky alien is off your planet, he crash lands … again. After deciding not to complete his mission and leave Earth and go home, “Harry” once again finds himself stranded in Patience, Colorado.

As the season two premiere of Resident Alien gets closer, Nerds and Beyond got the opportunity to speak with Corey Reynolds (Sheriff Mike Thompson), Alan Tudyk (Harry Vanderspeigle), Sara Tomko (Asta Twelvetrees), and Alice Wetterlund (D’Arcy Bloom) about their characters and the upcoming season of Resident Alien.

Nerds and Beyond: Corey, how much of the Sheriff’s rants are scripted compared to adlibbed?

Corey Reynolds: You know we do a lot of improvising and adlibbing. They are pretty open to some of my rants. We always get one off with what’s on the page, so we always have that in the safety net, but I say when you are talking about the rants, in particular, it’s probably about 50/50. You know, and I think to piggyback off something that Alan (Tudyk) was talking about working with Alex (Borstein) and seeing stuff that two actors who were just improvising and just going at it. I think that’s the fun thing as actors on the show is that we do so many takes that we don’t know which one they are going to use. So they can construct different things depending upon the choices they make in the editing room, and for us, it makes it interesting to watch the shows to see what’s constructed from all the ingredients we put in the pie. And that’s not to take anything away from our writers and Chris Sheridan. What they start with and the foundation they give us script-wise is always, you know, laugh out loud as you’re reading it funny. You know we get to add our icing on the top and put our little sprinkles on top when we get to filming, and that is where that collaborating comes into play which that’s fulfilling as an actor.

Nerds and Beyond: And Alan, how is it playing multiple versions of Harry?

Alan Tudyk: Oh right, it’s fun. That’s right; I’ve been thinking about how much this character is challenging in that it’s drama, it’s comedy, it’s broad physical stuff, it’s lines, and it’s action. But it is also Harry, the alien; Harry, the guy the alien kills and takes over; and then last season, there was zombie Harry, so it was a version of the guy who was alive, but now he’s dead and rotting in the freezer, but he’s animated and living in the imagination of the alien. It’s great.

Corey Reynolds: And he’s great at it to.

Alan Tudyk: Thanks, man. It’s cool to see them play off each other, you know. I didn’t realize how much of an alien … I thought the alien was kind of very subtly different, then I saw him talking to the zombie me, and oh wow, he’s really an oddball. He’s weird. So I don’t know. It’s fun. It’s always fun as an actor to be challenged with any role, and this one never stops doing that for me.

Nerds and Beyond: I was wondering how between keeping Harry’s secret and seeing Jay (Kaylayla Raine) and D’Arcy get closer, how that affects their (Asta and D’Arcy’s) dynamic and friendship throughout the season?

Sara Tomko: I am so jealous, Sarah. I am so jealous. I think it’s nice for Asta and Harry. They get closer because he obviously needs to rely on her now that he’s back, but she also pushes him out of the nest to make new friends. And while that’s happening, she’s seeing a new friendship forming between her daughter and best friend. It’s really, really hard for her to take. I’m not quite sure how that relationship dynamic will turn out with Jay, but I know it causes a little bit of hesitancy with D’Aarcy because she’s jealous. So, she kind of takes it out on her, and we are going to see them have, I think, just this moment of being angry with one another because D’Arcy also knows that she’s lying to her. And even though you see this beautiful scene in (season two) episode one where they come to and have this moment of like, I know what your secret is. She thinks it’s about the alien, but it’s really about Jay. It’s a great metaphor for how we are doing this dodging throughout the season of them lying to each other still while still keeping this friendship which means a lot to the both of them.

Alice Wetterund: Yeah, it’s this big secret that’s between them that essentially is the premise of the show, this resident alien coming between these two incredibly close friends who rely on each other for everything, and we continuously have to get over that. So the whole season one into season two is Asta and D’Arcy making amends and coming back together and figuring it out over and over. And Asta almost telling D’Arcy over and over again because it’s just so unnatural for her to keep something this big from her, but she has to. So that’s sort of the dynamic with them, and that provides the tension. If D’Arcy ever finds out, we’ll see what the conflict becomes then. But with Jay, Jay is a teenager, and so is D’Arcy emotionally speaking. So it’s just natural for D’Arcy she doesn’t see anything wrong with it. She has no clue what it would be like to have a daughter, and she doesn’t want to have a clue. She’s just like, “yeah, we’re friends whatever,” and in a lot of ways, her thoughtlessness leads to this conflict with her best friend.

Sara Tomko: It didn’t occur to me until you just said that Alice that it’s like a way for both of you to get closer to me.

Alice Wetterlund: Yeah, for sure.

Thank you to NBC Universal and the cast for their time today. Stay tuned for our interview with showrunner Chris Sheridan coming soon!

Resident Alien season 2 returns on January 26 at 9 p.m. ET on SYFY. Check out our other Resident Alien coverage here.

‘9-1-1: Lone Star’ Recap: Season 3, Episode 2 “Thin Ice”

As the winter storm continues to pummel Austin, the now separated members of the 126 fight to save lives (to the detriment of their own in some cases) in the all new season 3, episode 2 of 9-1-1 Lone Star, “Thin Ice.”

A Dangerous Ice Rescue

FOX

Stuck at home a young boy, Abe, calls his mother to ask if he can go outside and play hockey with other kids. His asthma makes that impossible, but as time goes by he finally ventures outside just as the other kids leave. Playing hockey alone his asthma flairs and Abe falls through the ice. The woman who found the boy in episode 1 speaks with Grace who is able to route T.K., Tommy, and Nancy to him. Abe has been under for over five minutes, but they are determined to improvise without firefighters equipment to reach him. Tying bedsheets together, T.K. crawls carefully out on the ice as Tommy and Nancy hold the other end. In a shocking twist no one saw coming, the ice gives way and T.K. goes under just as he grabs Abe.

With T.K. and Abe on land again they discover in this series of unfortunate events that the rig has slid down an embankment (nice parking T.K.). They grab their equipment and improvise in the bystander’s van instead. Nancy and Tommy work on Abe with an ECMO, and they are able to revive him as the machine warms up and oxygenates his blood. Another ambulance arrives to transport Abe. T.K. steps out of the way while Tommy relays the information, but when they turn around T.K. has vanished. Suffering severe hypothermia, he’s wandered away and helpfully left a clothing trail. They find a very naked T.K. who only manages to walk a few yards before collapsing with no heartbeat.

Carlos arrives at the hospital thanks to Nancy’s little white lie that T.K. asked to see him. Abe’s mother finds Nancy to let her know he’s expected to make a full recovery. The same may not be true for T.K. who is on a ventilator in the ICU, unconscious and essentially on his death bed.

A Hill Country Cabin Rescue

FOX

Owen returns to his cabin with the man Buttercup found, (good boy Buttercup) just as Sadie also arrives with hot toddies. He’s suffered a deep cut that nicked an artery and Owen has no choice but to cauterize the wound with a hot fire poker to stop the bleeding. Naturally this is when the man, who only speaks Spanish, regains consciousness to find two people holding him down with a fire poker. Not alarming at all, right? Without a phone, Owen and Sadie assemble her ex’s radio. Thankfully, help is on the way but it’s a long wait before anyone can reach them with resources stretched so thin.

Sadie speculates that the man is here illegally, their cabin location is close to a smuggling route. As they chat, the man runs away into the white out conditions. Owen immediately heads out to find him. While searching Owen stumbles right off a small cliff, they don’t call it the hill country for nothing. He wakes in a barn filled with illegal migrants taking shelter from the storm. Elena, who speaks English, tells Owen they were in transit when the coyotes tried to steal everything from them. They fought back but there was a crash so they ran. That’s when the man Owen was looking for stumbles into the barn waving a gun, the coyote these people have been fleeing.

126 Members Save One of Their Own

FOX

Back at the collapsed church, both Paul and the volunteer, Lindsey, are still missing. The 122 Captain wants to play things by the book but Judd talks him into letting them carefully search for Paul and Lindsey. As the 129 rolls out, Mateo requests to stay with the 122 and search for Paul. As they search, Paul is thankfully uninjured inside a void space where he finds Lindsey with minor injuries. Paul’s radio malfunctions but luckily Lindsey is handy with electronics and fixes it. He’s able to radio Mateo and Judd while Grace directs them to his location.

As they wait, Lindsey reveals she feels like it’s her fault they are trapped. When the roof caved she froze rather than running. Paul reassures her that’s not true, but it’s short-lived comfort when the water pipes burst and thoroughly soak them. Judd perfectly sums up the now dire situation here and across the city, “An ice storm hit Texas and this place ain’t ever been weather-proofed.”

Clever as always, Paul finds a trash bag to put Lindsey in to help keep her warm. He also wraps her in his fireman’s jacket, foregoing anything warm for himself. Meanwhile, Judd and Mateo pitch a risk rescue strategy of sledgehammering through a wall to reach them. The 122 Captain rightly senses defeat and approves their method. In an effort to stay awake, Paul prompts them to talk about what pisses them off. Lindsey screams that she hates feeling invisible. As Paul beings to fade, Lindsey demands to know what pisses him off. “Them closing my firehouse, the 126, over some BS!” He shouts back. Paul lists every member of the 126 and why they matter to him just before passing out. Mateo and Judd crashes through the wall in the nick of time, waking Paul up in the process and they are rushed to the hospital.

On the way to the hospital, Judd sweetly makes the firetruck stop at the dispatch center to drop off provisions for Grace while she’s working. In the break room he unbags the english breakfast tea, ginger for her stomach, and cough drops (just in case). Grace is more than a little embarrassed by his actions (but we are all for him spoiling her, they are relationship goals!).

By the end of the episode Owen’s at gunpoint, T.K.’s in the ICU, and we’re still no closer to reuniting the 126. Sadly, fans will have to wait a full two weeks for the next episode! Stay tuned for our continued coverage on 9-1-1 Lone Star, including episodic recaps and more!

0

It’s time to scrub in, because Grey’s Anatomy is sticking around for another season on ABC! The longest-running primetime medical drama is officially renewed for a historic 19th season.

Following never-ending rumors of a cancellation, it seems like the Ellen Pompeo-led series will be staying for at least one more season. There’s no word from ABC on whether or not season 19 will be it.

Grey’s Anatomy is currently on its winter hiatus, but season 18 will be back on Thursday, February 24 at 9 p.m ET/8 p.m. CT on ABC, following the return of Station 19! Stay tuned to Nerds & Beyond for more news.

‘Scream’: Franchise To Be On Sale On Vudu Ahead Of Fifth Installment’s Release

0

Ghostface is set to return to Woodsboro, and it’s always someone you know. Scream, the fifth installment to the franchise, is exclusively in theaters this Friday, January 14.

To refresh fans on the rules of horror movies, Vudu will be hosting a sale on the four films currently under the franchise in 4K UHD (ultra high definition). Starting on Tuesday January 11, buy the original trilogy (originally priced at $29.99) for only $17.99, and Scream 4 (originally at $7.99) for $4.99 on Vudu.

Jack Quaid (The Boys), Melissa Barrera (In the Heights) and Jenna Ortega (You) join the ensemble headed by Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette. Dylan Minnette (Goosebumps), Mason Gooding (Let It Snow), Kyle Gallner (Ghosts of War), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Love), and Mikey Madison (Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood) are also bringing new faces to the franchise. Marley Shelton is returning from Scream 4 as Deputy Judy Hicks.

Campbell, Cox, and Arquette are, of course, returning to the franchise for their fifth time. While this trio has been able to survive many monsters under the Ghostface mask, it’s certainly going to be a nail-biter to see if all of them make it to the end of this movie.
