Anime NYC Day 1: Highlights, Tips & Tricks

Anime NYC is upon us! We took today to get the lay of the land and get you ready for the big weekend.

This year, thanks to the date change, Anime NYC is bigger and better than ever. If you’re heading down and wondering where you can meet any of the guests or find Artist Alley, you can find the map in the official Anime NYC app along with lists of all the vendors, artists, and voice actors in attendance this year.

Anime NYC

The big English voice acting guests this year include Critical Role, Aleks Le (Solo Leveling, Demon Slayer), Bryce Papenbrook (Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer), and Max Mittelman (Genshin Impact, One Punch Man), among others, as well as Japanese seiyūs and creators you can catch on panels (and maybe some interviews here later, too). You can find the full guest list on the Anime NYC website. (Please note that autograph sessions with the Japanese guests were already assigned via random lotteries leading up to the event and Critical Role is likely entirely sold out.)

Along with the guests, fans can enjoy visiting the booths of their favorite games, publishers, and anime production companies. Crunchyroll and Aniplex are both in attendance, Seven Seas Entertainment, Kodansha, a Solo Leveling experience, Good Smile, Bandai Namco (complete with a huge Gashapon area), HIDIVE, VIZ, and miHoYo are just some of the big names you can visit.

A Japanese food court can be found all the way at the right end of the convention hall, and if you’re all con shopping out, you can visit the gaming hall with both tabletop and video games available to play. If somehow you’re not exhausted by the time the day is done, there are multiple after parties taking place throughout the weekend.

If you’re new to conventions, or maybe this is your first big NYC show, so here are some of our favorite tips for making it out on the other side of a busy convention weekend.

  • Wear comfortable shoes! Yeah, those cute ones might look good, but you’re going to be feeling it later. Trust me, I’ve done it.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle, it’s cheaper. Snacks, too!
  • Don’t compare your cosplays to anyone else. You look great in whatever level you’re at. The most important part of cosplay is having fun.
  • Get the app. They’re not paying me to say that. It’s useful for keeping track of your schedule and finding some of those hard-to-find panel rooms.
  • Cash! Bring it. The Wi-Fi isn’t great inside Javits and a lot of vendors’ card readers don’t work. Save yourself from FOMO and go to the ATM before you head in.
  • Take breaks when you need them. Don’t overdo it. And get a good night’s sleep beforehand.
  • Be respectful of the vendors and artists’ tables! Don’t leave your trash on them or touch things without permission. Also, be courteous to fellow attendees and ask cosplayers for photos.
  • Plan your transit route ahead of time, especially if you’re not accustomed to the NYC public transit system.

Anime NYC is one of our favorite shows every year, and we can’t wait to share more with you! See you there!

Photos: BUSH at the Artpark Amphitheater in Lewiston, NY

The threat of thunderstorms couldn’t dampen the packed crowd’s dedicated 90’s grunge nostalgia for the BUSH Loaded: Greatest Hits tour show at the Artpark Amphitheater in Lewiston, NY on August 17. Flannel was abundant at the beautiful state park overlooking the Niagara River.

The show opened with the punk-rock sounds of London-based Bones UK. Along with guitarist Carmen Vandenburg and drummer Heavy, lead singer & bassist Rosie Bones tackles feminist issues with a hard-driving bass line.

Thirty-year veterans Candlebox came out swinging with their iconic Seattle hard rock grunge sound. Current members Kevin Martin, Adam Kury, Brian Quinn, Island Styles, and BJ Kerwin performed a mix of classic hits and songs from more recent years, including “Elegante” from their newest and final studio album The Long Goodbye. They finished up their set with 90’s anthems “Far Behind” and You”.

Revered heavy metal musician Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains brought his distinctive voice and hard-hitting guitar along with tour band, Zach Throne, Greg Puciato, Roy Mayorga, Eliot Lorango, and Lola Collette. Cantrell played an even balance of classic AIC favorites and solo works. They opened with “Psychotic Break” off of his 2002 solo album Degradation Trip and closed with one of Alice in Chains’s highest charting singles “Rooster”, which Cantrell wrote in tribute to his father. His new solo album, I Want Blood, will be released on October 18.

The BUSH Greatest Hits lived up to its name as headliner BUSH hit the stage with a high-intensity set led by singer and founding member Gavin Rossdale. He is joined by current band members Chris Traynor on guitar, Corey Britz on bass, and Nik Hughes on drums. BUSH’s sound has evolved with time, yet this set list blended seamlessly with a hard-rock through-line driven by Rossdale’s signature high-energy stage presence. They opened with their debut album Sixteen Stone’s hit single “Everything Zen”. The 1994 album was well represented throughout the set with the inclusion of “Machinehead” and “Little Things”. “Glycerine” and “Comedown” had the honor of closing the encore along with a funky cover of The Beatles “Come Together”.

The BUSH summer tour will continue for the next month until its conclusion at Nationals Park in Washington DC on September 21.

Photos: Five for Fighting at Electric City in Buffalo

Los Angeles based singer-songwriter John Ondrasik, known most as Five for Fighting, held an intimate performance at Buffalo’s newest music venue, Electric City, on August 8 at the start of his 2024 Summer tour.

Electric City, formerly known as the Tralf Music Hall, has been completely renovated and modernized, making it the perfect setting for Ondrasik’s soothing, melodic style.

Local opener Ten Cent Howl set the mood with their classic Americana folk rock sound. Then Ondrasik took the stage accompanied by tour musicians Pete Thorn on guitar, Sean Hurley on bass, and Randy Cooke on drums. The crowd sang along as they opened the set with an energetic rendition of “America Town”. The high energy continued as Ondrasik played on piano and acoustic guitar. Ondrasik paused the show to speak about his efforts to help the citizens of Afghanistan before a solemn performance of “Blood on My Hands”. They finished out the set with crowd favorites.

The Five for Fighting tour will continue for the next few weeks around the Great Lakes region and along the Atlantic coast, concluding in Port Washington, NY on October 10th.

Radio Company and Louden Swain at the Sagebrush in Austin, Texas

0

Hot off the heels of Creation Entertainment’s The Road So Far tour in Austin, Texas, Radio Company and Louden Swain performed to a packed venue at the Sagebrush on Monday, August 19.

Radio Company, which is comprised of Steve Carlson and Jensen Ackles, were playing the first of two sold-out shows at the Sagebrush, happening on Monday and Tuesday night. Louden Swain, which features Rob Benedict, Billy Moran, Stephen Norton, and Michael Borja, joined Radio Company for the first night.

I attended Monday night’s show. Louden Swain played some of their most popular songs, taking command of the room and had the audience singing along. The band gave it their all, even though it was incredibly warm (more on that, later). Louden Swain always puts on a fantastic show, and this was no different – they have been a band for 20+ years and continue to impress every audience they come across.

There was a small break after they were off stage, and then Radio Company came on stage, complete with a full band. The energy in the room was electric, and the band even seemed surprised when every person sang their lyrics back to them. They played songs like, “Cannonball”, “Let Me Be”, “Sounds of Someday”, “Keep on Ramblin'”, “City Grown Willow”, “Quarter To”, and more, and the audience loved getting to hear some of their favorite songs live.

The bands and the musicians absolutely did their best to put on an incredible show, and they all sounded amazing. However, being at this venue, there were a lot of issues with the setup and the venue itself.

The venue is about twenty minutes outside of downtown. Due to the heat, the venue had rightfully been requesting that fans not line up early for safety reasons, fearing injuries due to the heat. It was set to be over 100 degrees that day. The doors were originally set to open at 7, however, the venue changed the time to 6 to allow fans to get in early. Fans did start lining up around 5, and were let in soon after. The venue is set up as standing room only, with a few tables and chairs littered to the side and the back.

Attendees had been requesting ADA accommodations for those who were disabled, and they were put to the side of the stage behind the pit, blocking any view of the stage at all. Attendees were also standing right in front of them with not much more than a small alleyway to move, so most of them couldn’t see the concert at all, just hear it.

With temperatures reaching almost 102 degrees that day, the venue was not prepared. Walking into the venue, either the air conditioning wasn’t working or it was very weak; it was probably warmer inside the venue than it was outside, and that’s saying something. It was unbearable, and fans were overheating, and I, myself, was even nauseous from the heat. Attendees were trying to find any little spot that would give them any sort of relief, and there were few. There were big fans mounted on the ceiling in the corners aimed at the main part of the audience, however they weren’t on. There were smaller fans to the sides of the audience that were near the tech table, but nothing that really made a difference. It was noticeable that the bands were also overheating, with sweat pouring down them onto their instruments.

Sadly, I left the show about 5 songs in from Radio Company due to the heat and how unsafe it was. I wasn’t the only one, either. Many of the attendees were leaving early due to the heat and even going outside to catch a breath of air — when outside was still in the 90s at 9 p.m.

Overall, the bands were great and did the best that they could, but the venue presented an unsafe environment for many, including myself. I hope that if Radio Company comes back to Austin for shows, they can pick a venue that can accommodate the heat and the crowds.

Casey McQuiston Stops in Austin for ‘The Pairing’ and Talks to Genevieve and Jared Padalecki

0

Casey McQuiston, the New York Times bestselling author, appeared at the Barnes & Noble at the Arboretum in Austin, Texas on Friday, August 16.

Before the signing, there was a Q&A session and chat with Casey that was hosted by Genevieve and Jared Padalecki.

Chairs were set up right down the middle of the store for attendees who purchased tickets in advance, which sold out quickly. Over 300 people were in attendance, either sitting in chairs, standing alongside the rows, weaved throughout the bookshelves, and some were even on the second level, looking down.

Casey, most known for their hit novels Red, White & Royal Blue, and One Last Stop among others, is currently doing a book tour across the country to promote their newest book The Pairing.

The energy in the room was infectious; many people clutched their copies of The Pairing, and many were excited to get a glimpse of the moderator, Gen Padalecki, too. As they were announced, they also announced that Jared Padalecki would be joining as a surprise guest moderator, and the audience erupted in cheers.

Before long, the three of them sat down at a table in the front to discuss the book. Gen and Jared were the perfect hosts for this. Gen and Jared are avid readers, and Gen even does monthly chats with authors over on Momentus to share her favorite books and talk to the authors.

Both Gen and Jared brought along their own copies of The Pairing, which had sticky notes to mark sections, highlighted quotes, and notepads full of questions and notes for Casey about the book.

They asked Casey about different parts of the book, inspirations behind scenes or characters and even quotes that they felt most connected to. The questions were also opened up to the audience, and the audience asked questions about different character traits, as well as a question about people trying to ban Queer books in libraries. It was an intelligent, and engaging conversation, and for people who had not yet finished or read the book, it made them all the more excited to finish or pick up their own copy.

At the end of the panel, they all stood up and said bye to the crowd, with Casey ready to sign books for those who had purchased the tickets. One by one, fans lined up, excited to see Casey and get their book signed, and the event was well run by the staff at Barnes & Noble.

The event was a huge success, and seeing the crowd be so excited before, during, and after the signing made the energy in the room even more infectious.

You can see more about Casey and their books, here. You can also read our review of the book, here.

‘Bridgerton’: Yerin Ha Cast as Sophie Beckett for Season 4

.In July, Netflix announced that the focus of the fourth season would be on Benedict Bridgerton’s love story, portrayed by Luke Thompson. This matter had been the subject of speculation among fans since the season 3 finale. Yerin Ha, an Australian actress known for her work in Halo, has been cast as Sophie Beckett, the love interest of the second-oldest Bridgerton brother.

Variety first reported the exciting news.

In Julia Quinn’s book series Bridgerton, specifically in Benedict’s book An Offer from a Gentleman, the story revolves around Benedict’s quest to find true love with a twist. In this Cinderella story, Benedict meets a mysterious young woman at his mother’s Masquerade Ball and becomes infatuated with her. The woman, named Sophie, is the daughter of an earl but has been treated as a servant by her disdainful stepmother. Benedict embarks on a two-year-long journey to find her, and they eventually find themselves in each other’s arms.

Since the premiere of season 4 is not until 2026, fans can pass the time by reading Benedict’s book and rewatching the first three seasons.

Let us know in the comments what you’re excited to see in the upcoming fourth season, and remember to keep up with Nerds and Beyond for all your Bridgerton news!
