Photos: The Used, Raue, and Plain White T’s in Nashville

You know it’s going to be a good night of epic music when The Used rolls into town, and that reputation was certainly fulfilled on a warm October night in Music City USA. On September 30, 2024, The Used brought Raue and Plain White T’s along for the ride as they made a tour stop at Marathon Music Works in Nashville, TN. Marathon Music Works, a local favorite, is a historic repurposed motor manufacturing and repair facility that has been converted into a legendary music space known for its killer light shows and sound for music artists of all types.

The night kicked off with duo Raue taking the stage to hype the crowd up for the evening’s festivities. Bringing an infectious energy and a sound that straddled the line between alternative, grunge, and a little pop-punk mixed in, the band set out to introduce themselves to a new crowd in a big way. They had some technical difficulties, which would make even the most seasoned performers squirm — but they didn’t let it stop them from delivering an energy-soaked performance. They even performed a great rendition of Radiohead’s “Creep” which had the audience singing along.

Coming to the stage next was The Plain White T’s. I have seen them live several times, and they never fail to bring a smile to my face every time they perform. Their sets are always a beacon of positivity and fun, and this one was absolutely no different. Performing songs both old and new, you could feel the happiness filtering through the venue. It was such a positive experience. They had moments where they invited the crowd to sing along, which the audience was more than happy to oblige. They played songs off of their latest release from earlier this year including their favorite from that album “Red Flags” as well as plenty of songs from the older albums to keep the longtime fans happy. Of course, a PWT show wouldn’t be complete without “Hey There, Delilah”. For a twist on the longtime favorite, Shrek (Yes, Shrek) came out at the very end to finish off the song. They closed out their night with yet another upbeat song that is a fan favorite “Rhythm of Love”.

As the lights dimmed in preparation for The Used to take the stage, the setup for their stage set began to take shape in front of the crowd. All night, the entire back line of the stage was covered with a giant black curtain to obscure the set, but as the stagehands took it down you could see the level of production that had gone into it. The entire stage set was made of chain link fence, right down to the mic stands and risers themselves. You could tell the type of scene the band was trying to set for their night, and even the music being played over the house speakers fed into it. During songs that were playing, you would hear the songs start to break up or warp, and then a track of flies buzzing playing for a few minutes only for the music to return to playing as normal. This pattern repeated through the entire set break until the band finally took the stage to a blast of lights. The first song out was “Pretty Handsome Awkward” and the band continued to deliver a blistering, high-energy performance from there. Playing songs old and new — the crowd loved every second of it. Like with any other The Used show, there were middle fingers everywhere. If you are familiar with the band, in their circle — that means “I love you”, and lead singer Bert McCracken made sure to point that out to those who were new to the family. There was cartwheel competition in the middle of the crowd which was promptly turned into a circle pit for “Blood On My Hands”, which I feel like can only happen at a show like this. They closed out the night with a three-song encore that included “A Box Full of Sharp Objects”.

It was a great night of fun, music, and found family at Marathon Music Works and the audience went home happy. Not even a little rain could dampen the mood of this night.

HFStival was always a much-anticipated music festival in the Washington, D.C. area from 1990-2006, and was held by the WHFS radio station each year. When the radio station was canceled, the festival went along with it until 2010 and 2011, when the festival was revived for two years. Unfortunately, I was never lucky enough to attend when it was around initially, so when I heard it was coming back, I knew I had to attend.

The festival lineup was stacked with acts like Bush, Incubus, Death Cab for Cutie, and Postal Service.

Lit opened the festival for the crowd, who brought a lot of energy early in the day. Following Lit was Filter, Tonic, and Violent Femmes (an absolute favorite of mine). Girl Talk brought a group of fans on stage to dance as they DJ’ed and blew toilet paper rolls into the audience with a rigged leaf blower. Jimmy Eat World was next, and they didn’t disappoint. Liz Phair, a legend for female empowerment in music and the only female lead singer of the day was also incredible and a great lead-up to Bush.

Bush has been a band that I’ve been a fan of for decades, and getting to see them and photograph them was incredibly surreal. Gavin Rossdale has the most distinct vocals and being able to see him perform was epic.

Incubus put on the kind of show only Incubus could put on; moody and ethereal. They’re another band I’ve been aching to see for years and it was incredible to witness their talent.

Death Cab for Cutie and Postal Service closed out the night with epic performances, the crowd having the best time as they sang along to their biggest hits.

The festival had various activities throughout the day as well, including a cupcake eating contest, a Guitar Hero contest held on stage, flash tattoos, and tarot readings around the venue. The energy at the festival was off the charts, even as the rain hit during Incubus’ set. It was a perfect day for the HFStival comeback, here’s to hoping we see another one next year!

I also wanted to say a thank you to everyone who works for the festival and I.M.P. Every single person who took us to and from the stage or answered questions went out of their way to make it the best day ever. I can’t express how appreciative I am to the staff for making the day so easy and for being so excited about the festival and the music.

Interview: Lewis Pullman and Makenzie Leigh Talk ‘Salem’s Lot’ Drive-In Scene & Working With Gary Dauberman

0

The latest adaptation of Stephen King’s legendary 1975 horror novel, Salem’s Lot, is finally set for its long-awaited premiere next week.

Written and directed by Gary Dauberman, Salem’s Lot sees author Ben Mears return to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration for his next book only to discover his hometown is being preyed upon by a bloodthirsty vampire.

Ahead of the release, Nerds & Beyond had a chance to speak with Lewis Pullman and Makenzie Leigh, who portray Ben Mears and Susan Norton, respectively.

Please note this interview has been edited for clarity.

Nerds & Beyond: The drive-in scene was a really fun and scary way to reimagine the final showdown in this version [of ‘Salem’s Lot’], and especially fitting for the runtime and the time period. Can you share anything, behind the scenes, about bringing that part to life?

Makenzie Leigh: Just that it was weeks long. It was maybe shot over two weeks. Every day. Lewis was filming just seconds, little, little seconds. But those seconds, that would take you a full day.

Lewis Pullman: Yeah, just crawling around in that gravel. I think I got gravel in every crack known to man. And then we went back and did additional photography in order to beef up that scene. Because, I guess in a test screening, everyone was like, we want more of the drive-in. So we ended up cutting some stuff and adding to that. We went back to that drive-in. But it was a great experience, because despite it being never-ending — we’re like, how long and how many vampires are there? — it’s such an awesome set piece. It requires everybody, every department, to really work together in total tandem. Because you have to have a fake sun that is creating an actual timeline, you’re watching the seconds click by as the sun goes [down] and takes over the lot and just the visuals of all these trunks popping open. It was not difficult to put yourself in that position of, like, I gotta get the hell out of here.

Leigh: Yeah, I mean, for me, when we added on, I got more stunts.

Pullman: Yeah, she did.

Leigh: I got kind of like a five minute sequence that became choreographed. That was like, the time of my life.

Pullman: The concession stand would never have been.

Leigh: I was not there [prior].

Pullman: We got to beat each other up in that.

Nerds & Beyond: Gary Dauberman had a cool, unique vision for the movie with this 70s retro horror vibe that’s going on. What was it like working with him as a director?

Pullman: Such a blast.

Leigh: Yeah, like, the most fun I’ve ever had.

Pullman: Yeah, because he’s like a little kid, in the best way. He’s maintained that childlike thing where he’s so excited to be making this movie, and that’s all you want. It’s so contagious and so intoxicating when it’s like their dream come true. [He] knows every inch and corner of this whole world like the back of his hand. So any question that you might have, he’s got an answer for it, and it’s an excitable answer, and he’s excited to talk about it. He’s got his finger on the pulse of that nostalgic kind of feeling that I think this movie really, really begged for.

Salem’s Lot, based on the best-selling novel by Stephen King, will stream on Max on October 3.

Interview: Spencer Treat Clark Talks ‘Salem’s Lot’ & Working With Gary Dauberman

Ahead of the release, Nerds & Beyond had a chance to speak with Spencer Treat Clark, who portrays Mike Ryerson.

Please note this interview has been edited for clarity.

Nerds & Beyond: It seems like Gary Dauberman was very passionate about his version of this adaptation, and it was really such a cool way to bring the story to the screen. What
was it like working with him as a director on the project?

Spencer Treat Clark: It was so cool. I was just talking about prepping for the vampire of it all. Mike Ryerson, as a vampire, was shot pretty early on in the schedule. So at that point, we were still trying to figure out how the vampires move, how they act, and how much of their old life is affecting them. How much of the pull of Barlow, like does he control them at all? All that stuff was done in correlation with Gary. Epecially early on, we had some time to experiment. It wasn’t this crazy fast pace that you might get on a TV set. We were able to sort of play with things and try different things. You have to feel protected that you can do something ridiculous, and Gary would be like, okay, that’s not working. Let’s go in this direction. We all leaned on him really heavily.

Gary had Alex Ward, who plays Barlow. He does monsters in all sorts pictures. He’s a specialist at moving his body. Gary worked with him and with all of us to make sure that the vampire aesthetic, motivation, and the way they move, that everything was in correlation. That’s just one fun example of how we got to work with Gary to craft the vampire aesthetic. You always lean heavily on your director, but especially for something like that. We had to be like, okay, Gary, what’s it looking like for you? Here’s what it’s feeling like for me.

Nerds & Beyond: As someone who clearly enjoys acting in horror … You’re cast in this iconic Stephen King film, how did you feel when you got the role? What was going through your head?

Spencer Treat Clark: That’s a good question. It’s funny, I actually remember I was driving to go surfing on the East Coast when I got that call. And it was a really nice feeling to get it right before I got in the water, which is an activity I don’t get to do as much anymore, as much as I’d like. I treated myself to take a little morning off going surfing and got that call from my manager. It was really nice to paddle out and be like, oh, this is going to be fun. I’m going to have a great fall. I’m going to go to the East Coast and do this cool role. And, yeah, it’s funny. I do remember that very vividly, getting the phone call and being like, hell, yeah, this is gonna be awesome. And then I went out and surfed for a few hours and paddled out there and spent some time in the water and got to reflect. It was like, the best way to get a job. It was perfect timing. It’s funny that you should ask. Honestly, I completely forgot about that until you just asked.

Interview: Alfre Woodard Talks ‘Salem’s Lot’ & Dr. Cody

Ahead of the release, Nerds & Beyond had a chance to speak with Alfre Woodard, who portrays Dr. Cody.

Please note this interview has been edited for clarity.

Nerds & Beyond: In this latest version of the film, there are quite a few changes. Particularly the fact that Dr. Cody is a woman, which I think is really a great change in the dynamic for the narrative. Especially given that we’re going back to the 70s time period, too. What kind of conversations did you have prior to filming with Gary Dauberman in preparing for this character and this change?

Alfre Woodard: That was none of my business, and I don’t think he was concerned with it. Once you cast a woman … hopefully you always cast the person, whether they’re a woman, man, non-binary, you cast the person that could really pull off what you want to use that character for. So I would like to believe and was told that it was because of the Dr. Cody he suspected I might bring. I don’t know other Dr. Codys. I wouldn’t talk about it, because Dr. Cody only knows herself. Those are the fingerprints I’m concerned with finding, because we’re all born … billions and billions of people, nobody has the same fingerprints. So when you bring a character off the page and turn them into a human being, that’s your job. The specificity with which you draw that person is what makes your viewer believe and pulls them in and says, this is real.

I’m gonna say this, this is interesting. There were very few OBGYNs back in the 70s, and we still didn’t have an equal rights amendment. We’re trying like hell to get it back then, but we got Roe. But that was the first time that I experienced — when I was in Boston, there’s a lot of colleges there — a few people saying, I have a woman OBGYN. We were like, what? That was like, a new thing. So I like the fact that Dr. Cody, although she was a general practitioner for that town … which is another reason she wasn’t going to leave. She’d been taking care of those people since Ben was a little boy. I like the fact that the beginning of women being integral in women’s health was during that period. We got the pill, we got the diaphragm. You got all kinds of stuff to manage your reproductive health care.

Nerds & Beyond: Your take on the character was excellent.

Woodard: I’m so pleased, not for me, but because you set out to tell a story in a way that your viewer can receive it however they do receive it. That it is something that, first of all, was worth two hours of their time, and that they’ll talk about it to somebody else.
