‘Arrow’ Season 7, Episode 9 Recap: “Elseworlds, Part 2”

Our Elseworlds recap continues tonight with Arrow. They redid the entire opening with Barry reading Oliver’s lines and showing him kissing Felicity, working out in prison, and getting beat up. It’s amazing!

The weather phenomenon that Cisco had noticed in Part 1 has now taken up residence in Star City. The skies have a red color and lightning is striking all over the town. This just happens to be where Curtis, Diggle, and the A.R.G.U.S. team are trying to take down Joe Wilson, Slade Wilson’s son. While Slade eventually became an ally, it seems Joe has taken up the mantle of his father’s former villainous ways. Joe easily dispatches the extra agents and almost manages to take out Diggle, but lucky for him, that’s when Barry, Oliver, and Kara show up. They lockdown Joe and while Diggle is happy for the save, he knows that if they are together, there must be a big problem.

The Green Arrow (Grant Gustin), Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), and The Flash (Stephen Amell) go to A.R.G.U.S. for help. Image courtesy of The CW.

Diggle and Curtis get to go through the whole thing that Team Flash did, learning that the person who is dressed as The Flash is actually Oliver and the person they know as the Green Arrow is actually Barry. Thankfully, they accept it pretty easily. Knowing the lightning strikes must be related to what is happening, Curtis says they need to create a pattern recognition program. They call in Felicity to help with that and opt not to tell her. This does leave her noticing that her husband is acting weirder than usual.

Oliver tries to get Barry to stay behind since he is technically the mayor and they would not want undue attention in Gotham City. Barry says he is going because if Gotham City can handle “the Batman,” they can handle the Green Arrow. Oliver says the Batman is not real, that he is an urban legend. When they get to Gotham City, the building they meet up at just happens to have a giant light with the Batman logo on it. The light does not convince Oliver. They decide to talk to a girl Oliver knows, but someone has already taken notices of their arrival in town.

On their way to the radio station where she works, they see how bad the town has gotten. It is basically just a world of criminals. The trio even gets mugged on their way, which ends up with them and the bad guys getting arrested. Lucky for them, they get bailed out by a mystery person who wants to meet them. They get dropped off at Bruce Wayne’s building, but it could not have been him who helped them; Oliver says that Bruce left Gotham three years ago and that no one knows why.  This is where they end up meeting Kate Kane, the person who bailed them out and wants them out of her city. To Oliver’s annoyance, she mentions that no one has seen Batman in years, giving Barry more proof that he exists.

Back in Star City, Cisco and Caitlin come to A.R.G.U.S. to help out because the red skies and lightning are no longer in Central City. It left when Oliver and Barry did. They figure out that it seems like someone is trying to breach through.

Caitlin accidentally mentions the body swap in front of Felicity. It is a lot for her to take, but her marriage was already strained by them becoming different people. Now it is just a bit more literal. She does have something else to deal with though. She creates a diagram for building a machine that will create a quantum flux. If they use it, whoever is trying to get through will be drawn to them. The machine isn’t quite strong enough, but they do see a version of The Flash and he manages to tell them that if they get “the book,” they can fix everything.

Using data stolen from the police station, Oliver is able to go through their database and find out who one of the people in the vision is – John Deegan. Kara goes to talk to Kate and finds out they are in similar situations, both cousins of powerful men. When Kara asks if Kate knows John Deegan, she says that he is a doctor at Arkham Asylum. While Kara runs off to tell Barry and Oliver, Kate heads down to her Batcave to get dressed.

Caitlin, Cisco, and Diggle breach to Gotham City just outside Arkham Asylum to tell Kara, Barry, and Oliver about what the other Flash said. They remember that Deegan was reading a book in the vision. Now they know they either need to find the book or find Deegan and make him tell them where the book is. First, they have to get into a mental institution.

Their ploy involves Kara bringing in a patient transfer, Caitlin, because she freezes stuff. Weirdly, the nurse at registration says they have a few of them like that there and simply has her fill out a form. Meanwhile, Diggle uses his own connections to get down to the level that has the offices and they find John Deegan is in his office/laboratory. He knows immediately that Oliver is indeed the real Green Arrow. When they demand that he fixes it, he admits that he has no intention of doing that. He makes an escape, but not before letting out the craziest of patients.

John Deegan (Jeremy Davies) has been having some fun with the world. Image courtesy of The CW.

Diggle and Oliver get as many patients back into their rooms as possible. A few escape, but they are met outside by the Green Arrow. One with a gold face mask manages to come up behind Barry with a bat and hit him. This is immediately followed up by Cisco getting hit by a van that the guy with the mask jumps into. Before they can take off, Batwoman lands on the van and takes care of the last two runaways.

Inside, Kara finds Deegan with the book. She is able to take it from him, but Deegan gets away. Caitlin is fighting a patient who seems to have a cold obsession of her own. Using a cold gun, she knocks Caitlin out. Barry and Oliver come to help. Oliver throws a lightning bolt and, like before, it goes a bit awry and knocks over a box containing some kind of hallucinogen. It makes Barry see Malcolm Merlyn and Oliver sees Eobard Thawne. Of course, this leads to Barry and Oliver fighting each other, thinking they’re fighting their enemies. The scene transitions in this fight are incredible. By far and away, one of the best fight scenes across the DCTV shows. Batwoman shows up and breaks up the fight as the hallucinogen effects wear off.

With that settled, everyone prepares to head back to Star City which makes Batwoman pleased. She wants them out of her city as soon as possible. Kara takes a moment to speak with Batwoman and tells her that her cousin would be proud. She admits that she knows who she is due to x-ray vision. This, of course, reveals her own identity, as well. They agree that together they would make a hell of a team before each woman goes her separate way.

Back in Star City, they turn the book over to Felicity and Curtis as the book has a cryptographic and metaphysical lock on it, and they are the ones who will be able to crack it the quickest. While they are busy with that, Oliver and Barry have a heart-to-heart. Neither really knew what the other had experienced in life until the fight with the hallucinations. They have a greater appreciation for what the other had gone through to become who they are.

Oliver and Felicity have a Barry and Iris kind of moment. He tells her that they are going to be fine and no matter who either of them are or what they become, she will always be the love of his life. They make up just in time for The Flash they saw earlier to finally make it through the breach. He tells them his name is Barry Allen (because obviously, we don’t have enough confusion on who’s who as it is). He tells the team that he’s there to warn them. Mar Novu, a man who calls himself The Monitor, is using the Book of Destiny to test worlds for a crisis that will cause a collision of realities.

Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) have made up. Image courtesy of The CW.

Looks like he got there just in time because Mar Novu is on the news. Kara, Oliver, Barry, and Barry from Earth 90 head down to have a chat. The older Barry does not last long as he attempts to go after The Monitor who just poofs him away. He tells the others that a crisis is imminent and someone far more powerful than himself is on the way. He is looking for those that will be able to defeat that person and save the multiverse. He admits that of those he tested, they were the first to get the book, but it was futile. Back at A.R.G.U.S., the book poofs away as well. The Monitor disappears and returns the book to Deegan who is told to do better and think bigger.

At that moment, reality changes once again. Both Barry and Oliver are dressed like greasers. Turns out they are a couple bandits called the Trigger Twins. Naturally, that is the moment the cops show up. In a weird twist, the cops are Joe Wilson, Malcolm Merlyn, and Ricardo Diaz. Oliver has no intention of being taken into custody and takes out Diaz, steals his gun, and fires at the other officers, sending them scattering. He and Barry take off, but they don’t get far. Superman shows up wearing a head-to-toe black outfit. He’s there to stop them.

I am really feeling for our guys right now! Every time they take a step forward, they get shoved sideways and it is a whole new world. I wonder how they’re going to overcome this time. We’ll get to see on Tuesday, December 11th when Elseworlds concludes on Supergirl.

Review: Louden Swain, Briana Buckmaster and Jason Manns Rock at Eddie’s Attic

Courtesy of Heather, Staff Writer

On Monday night Louden Swain, Briana Buckmaster and Jason Manns fans at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, Georgia were treated to a special and unique show, affectionately dubbed by fans as Swainlanta 2.0. When Louden Swain lead singer Rob Benedict had to cancel his appearance due to landing a role on NCIS: New Orleans, we knew it was going to be a unique experience! Louden Swain (Michael Borja, Billy Moran, and Stephen Norton) along with Jason Manns and Briana Buckmaster made it a night to remember.

I had the privilege of attending both shows and I was absolutely blown away. The vibe in the room was incredible, from both those on stage and those in the crowd. Norton had everyone cheering with his performance of Louden Swain’s ‘Overachiever’. The duets of Borja and Buckmaster in the first show and then Moran and Buckmaster in the second had the crowd captivated. It is always a treat to hear Moran sing and whether it was the beginning of ‘Poptart Heart’ or the end of ‘Hallelujah’, he had the crowd screaming in appreciation. Manns, whether performing solo, with Louden Swain, Station Breaks or Buckmaster, did not fail to amaze. Of course, it goes without saying that Buckmaster is a total rockstar and her vocals were unbelievable, as usual.

The arguable star of the night, however, was Borja. While he took the lead on Louden Swain songs like ‘Cool if I Come Over’, it was his on-stage antics that showed why fans love him so much. At one point during the second show, Borja had the performers and crowd laughing so hard that the show was briefly paused so that everyone could calm down.

It was so heartening to watch the crowd cheer and laugh all night. The audience participation was on the level of any other Louden Swain show, and everyone was having an amazing time.

Courtesy of Hailee, staff editor

There were quite a few touching moments throughout the show, such as leaving a space in the middle of the stage with an empty mic for Rob Benedict. It was something that definitely had a lot of fans tearing up. Another one of the most special moments that night was Louden Swain doing a rendition of ‘Amazing’ with the audience taking the lead vocals – complete with the entire room lit up with glow sticks and lights. Jason even came on stage later joking, “we should have saved that for the end.” The audience also had another chills-inducing moment with the kazoos during a Buckmaster led rendition of ‘Medicated’.

It goes without saying that the absence of Benedict was felt by everyone, but the work that Borja, Moran, Norton, Manns, and Buckmaster put into these shows was truly appreciated by all in attendance. We’re so proud of them, and we hope they felt all the love back at them.

‘The Umbrella Academy’ Teaser Trailer Released

An official teaser trailer has been released for The Umbrella Academy, a new Netflix series that is set to air in 2019. The Umbrella Academy is based on the award-winning comic book series of the same name, which was created and written by Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance).

The comic book series, which was initially released in 2007, was recently revived this past October after a 5 year hiatus. There are 15 issues, which can be purchased in digital form directly from the publisher (Dark Horse Comics) or in physical form from any comic book store.

The show is being written by Jeremy Slater (Fantastic Four) and developed by Steve Blackman (Fargo, Altered Carbon). Gerard Way is an executive producer, so fans can rest assured that the original creator is very much involved in the adaption.

Netflix’s official synopsis for the show is,

On the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, a billionaire industrialist, who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world. But not everything went according to plan. In their teenage years, the family fractured and the team disbanded. Now, the six surviving thirty-something members reunite upon the news of Hargreeves’ passing. Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Vanya and Number Five work together to solve a mystery surrounding their father’s death. But the estranged family once again begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.

The Umbrella Academy is set to premiere on Netflix on Feb. 15.

Our Favorite Holiday Movies and Specials

0

One of the best parts of the holiday season is all the movies and specials! They help us create fond memories and add more magic to the season. Here are just a few of our staff’s favorites.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Luke Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Tyrone Giordano, and Savannah Stehlin in The Family Stone (2005). Courtesy of IMDb.

The Family Stone

One of my personal favorite holiday films, The Family Stone tells the story of uptight businesswoman Meredith (Sarah Jessica Parker) going home with her boyfriend Everett (Dermot Mulroney) at Christmas time to meet his extremely eccentric and progressive family. The more Meredith’s uptight personality clashes with the family’s laidback ways the more Everett begins to question their own relationship. The best part of the movie is the family itself. His parents Sybil (Diane Keaton) and Kelly (Craig T. Nelson) are quietly dealing with a personal tragedy while outwardly being skeptical of the match between their son and his girlfriend. Everett’s sister Amy (Rachel McAdams) is full of snarky judgment towards Meredith while his brother Ben (Luke Wilson) is carefree in his attempts to help Meredith be herself. Being deaf and gay with an African American partner Everett’s brother Thad (Tyrone Giordano) could have been a caricature of diversity but instead neither element feels like it’s trying too hard. The family uses sign language throughout the movie like it is second nature. The only somewhat normal member of the family is Everett’s pregnant sister Susannah (Elizabeth Reaser), who stays more in the background. The Family Stone showcases the importance of acceptance and being true to who you are. This is why it is not only one of my favorite holiday films but a favorite film in general.-Em

Chevy Chase in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989). Courtesy of IMDb.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

A staple in my household, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is a hilarious take on spending the holidays with family and all the chaos that comes with it. The Griswold’s family Christmas involves a lot of frustration, especially for the Clark (Chevy Chase). Sappy Christmas trees, lights not plugged in right, a runaway squirrel, a toxic sewer system, and the “Jelly of the Month” club instead of the a Christmas bonus are just a few of the things that go wrong for him. It’s a great movie to watch with your family friends, or anyone who can relate to the frustrations that can come with the holidays. Beyond all the laughs, the movie shows that no matter what’s happening, no matter the differences you may have, spending time with the ones you love are truly what’s special about the holiday season.- Melanie

Will Ferrell in Elf (2003). Courtesy of IMDb.

Elf

Elf follows the journey of Buddy (Will Ferrell) as he leaves the North Pole and goes to New York to meet his birth father, Walter (James Caan). With a little mix-up one Christmas, Buddy ended up being raised as one of Santa’s elves, but being so much larger than all the other elves made it a bit hard for him to truly fit in. But in New York, Buddy meets his father at his greeting card business, and eventually stays with him, his wife, and son. Buddy also finds himself working in a department store where he meets Jovie (Zooey Deschanel), and they become quite smitten with each other. The movie really sparks that childlike wonder and Christmas spirit that can often get lost as we grow older. Buddy spreads that Christmas spirit to everyone around him, even showing his dad the true meaning of Christmas. As Buddy says, “the best way to spread Christmas cheer, is singing loud for all to hear!-Melanie

Drew Barrymore, Keanu Reeves, Googy Gress, and Jill Schoelen in Babes in Toyland (1986) Courte.sy of IMDb

Babes in Toyland

This Christmas musical film, while does not have any holiday songs, has had a significant effect on this time of year. The Toymaker was making toy soldiers for Santa but made too many, after this film came out toy soldiers appeared more as gifts and in parades. Proving that not all Christmas movies need to be Christmas focused to have the holiday spirit. Mary Quite Contrary (Annette Funicello) and Tom (Tommy Sands) are ready to get married when Barnaby (Ray Bolger) hires two men to kill Tom and steal Mary’s sheep. Barnaby does all this, so she will be forced to marry him, things do not go according to plan, and with the help of their friends and the Toymaker (Ed Wynn) Tom makes his way back to May so they can be together.-Sarah

A Garfield Christmas Special (1987) Courtesy of IMDb.

A Garfield Christmas

In this special you see Garfield stray from his usual selfish tendency to being sentimental and forming a bond with Jon’s grandmother. I watch this special every year, and even though I know the moment where the grandmother is sitting by the window in a rocking chair petting Garfield telling him about her husband who is no longer with them, I cry. One of the last lines in the show is what makes it so unique and a classic to watch at any age-Sarah

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)Courtesy of IMDb.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

In his probably most famous stop-motion movie, this Tim Burton film written by Caroline Thompson tells the stories of two famous holidays – with a twist. Halloween Town’s most famous citizen, Jack Skellington, has grown weary of scaring people or filling their dreams to “the brim with fright” and wants a change in his everyday life. He stumbles upon a place called Christmas Town, where everything is brighter, happier and no one is afraid of the monster beneath their bed. He wants to bring the Christmas spirit to his hometown, giving the cheerful holiday a creepy makeover by accident. But not to worry, there is a happy end for both Santa, the children’s favorite holiday and Jack Skellington in sight. With a wonderful soundtrack written by Danny Elfman (who also voiced Jack Skellington), Nightmare before Christmas is the perfect film to watch from October 1 until December 25t (and eccentrically throughout the year). I’ve loved this film since I was a child, because I’ve always had a fondness for creepy things and also loved Christmas. I like the dark, twisted humor combined with Jack’s naivety and Sally’s hope to make everything right again. Of course I also love the songs. They might not be classic Christmas tunes, but they’re part of one of the best original soundtracks in recent film history.- Conny

Rebecca Harrell Tickell in Prancer (1989). Courtesy of IMDb.

Prancer

In this 1989 movie, farm girl Jessica (Rebecca Harrell Tickell,) finds an injured reindeer and nurses it back to health. She is convinced that Prancer, as she calls him, is one of Santa’s reindeer gone missing and she must do whatever it takes to get him home. She knows that he must miss his family and that Santa needs him to deliver all the Christmas presents. She hides Prancer in her family’s barn, feeding him cookies until she can figure out a plan. Her father, John Riggs (Sam Elliott) finds the reindeer and wants to sell him to the town butcher to use as an advertising gimmick. I think of Prancer as the little reindeer that could. He manages to restore the Christmas spirit to the town and to Jessica’s father. He spreads love and joy wherever he goes. This movie always warms my heart no matter how many times I see it. If your Christmas spirit is faltering, make some popcorn and give Prancer a watch. It will bring out the Christmas in even the most grumpiest of Grinches.- Deb

January Jones, Elisha Cuthbert, Kris Marshall, and Ivana Milicevic in Love Actually (2003).Courtesy of IMDb.

Love Actually

Love Actually is a Christmas-themed romantic comedy with an ensemble cast (consisting of a long list of well-known stars), which explores various aspects of love through the telling of ten separate stories. Many of the characters and stories are linked in various ways, some large and others very small, which makes this a movie that can and should be watched more than once so that viewers can string together all of the hints and connections. The movie begins five weeks before Christmas, so it’s full of festive songs, decor, and themes throughout. One of my personal favorite stories from within the film is that of Jamie (Colin Firth) and Aurélia (Lúcia Moniz), which explores the nature of a profound love despite the obstacle of a complete language barrier. The story of David (Hugh Grant) and Natalie (Martine McCutcheon) is another that I’m particularly fond of, as it follows the budding, humorous, and sometimes awkward relationship between a young woman and her boss (who just happens to be the Prime Minister.) Love Actually will forever hold a special place in my heart, as my best friend and I spent a large portion of our teen years watching it again and again. On top of being a feel-good movie for any day of the year, it’s always a must-watch for me when the holidays roll around.- Lindsey

Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone (1990). Courtesy of IMDb.

Home Alone

Infamous for it’s screaming scenes and burglar pranks, this Christmas classic also contains a powerful message about what is important this season – family. After wishing his family gone, Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) wakes up to find he has the house all to himself. Meanwhile, his family is on a plane to Paris when his mom (Catherine O’Hare) realizes they forgot about him. While she does everything possible to get home to her son, Kevin enjoys his newfound freedom until a couple burglars come sneaking around the house. The Wet Bandits (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) have marked the McCallister house as their prize place to rob. They didn’t expect an ingenious eight-year-old to make it so difficult, causing numerous and hilarious injuries in the process. After foiling the Wet Bandits, Kevin makes a Christmas Eve wish to have his family back. On Christmas morning, his mom manages to make it back, followed by the rest of his family shortly after. Despite how much they fight, Kevin learns that his family really does love him and he’d much rather have them than no family at all.- Crystal

Kim Novak in Bell Book and Candle (1958). Courtesy of IMDb.

Bell, Book, and Candle

The 1958 film Bell, Book, and Candle may not be at the top of everyone Christmas movie list, but it is a staple in my house. Kim Novak stars as Gillian Holroyd, a witch living in Greenwich Village, who takes an interest in her new upstairs neighbor, Shep Henderson (James Stewart). Upon discovering that Shep is planning to marry her old college enemy, Gillian decides to make Shep hers by casting a love spell on him, with the help of her feline familiar, Pyewacket. It’s a purely selfish action because a witch cannot fall in love or she will lose her powers. Still Gillian enjoys the attention and the despair inflicted on Shep’s former fiance. It doesn’t take look for her to realize that her spell on Shep has gone too far, however, when he proposes marriage. Shep doesn’t believe her when she tries to reveal the truth about herself and the spell, not until Gillian’s aunt Queenie (Elsa Lanchester) confirms it. He is furious and leaves in search of someone to reverse the spell. Months later, Shep’s had the spell reversed, though his former fiance refuses to believe him or resume their relationship, and he has avoided seeing Gillian until Pyewacket shows up in his office. Frustrated, he attempts to return the cat to his downstairs neighbor. Gillian reveals that Pyewacket isn’t hers anymore because she lost her powers the minute she fell in love with Shep. Shep reveals that he returns her feelings, this time for real. This movie is not your traditional Holiday Classic. Its only real connect to the holiday itself is the setting. But it’s a story of making a mistake, learning from it, and finding happiness through it all. Kim Novak is stunning and ethereal as a witch in the 1950s and James Stewart is the classic leading man. The cast if characters around their romance is delightful, eccentric, and highly entertaining. And the portrayal of witchcraft and magic is lighthearted, whimsical, and ultimately harmless. Bell, Book, and Candle is definitely the movie I turn to when I’ve watched all the classics, when I want something that’s still got a holiday flair but isn’t overtly so.- Heather

Ocean City Comic Con, Maryland’s First Comic Con

0
Ocean City Comic Con was held Dec. 8.Courtesy of Ocean City Comic Con

On Saturday December 8, I attended Ocean City Comic Con. This was my sixth convention, but the first in my home state. While this convention may have been the smallest con I’ve been to so far, it may be my new favorite.

A group of Spider-Man, Miles Morales and Deapool cosplayers at Ocean City Comic con were posing for photos with con goers. Photo by Kayla.

The convention was held at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center in Ocean City, Maryland. This was the second year the convention has been held, but the first year at this venue. The convention outgrew its venue from the previous year. This says a lot for this event and the need for it in this area. Many fans have to travel outside the area to Philadelphia, Baltimore or Washington D.C. for events and cons. And while this event is much smaller than conventions like Wizard World, the fans were no less passionate and excited to be there.

Steampunkd Batman and Robin.Photo by Kayla.

Cosplayers were in abundance-you didn’t have to look far to see a Spider-Man, Deadpool, or anime character.  There were a few official cosplay guests including Katie Coe, Carter Cosplay, Ally Blaze, Sharon Rose, and Steampunk’d Batman. Artists were also in attendance selling prints and taking commissions  along with toy, comic, game and collectible vendors.  In addition Delores The DeLorean was there for fans to see and sit in, Doc Hollyday Designs brought their TARDIS, the Eastern Shore Ghostbusters and The 501st Legion Old Line Garrison were also in attendance.

There were also events taking place off the convention floor including panels and anime screenings.  I attended one of the panels called The Definition of “Geek” hosted by Loading Snacks.

Are you comfortable being a geek? If yes, why? If no, why not? How can we help each other be more comfortable being who we are? This panel will open the discussion on the definition of “geek” and how it has changed in recent years. We will discuss how our level of comfort with this and other labels has changed as more obscure pastimes such as reading comic books, playing video games and watching anime has bled over into the mainstream.
As a collective, the Loading Snacks Crew prides itself on being geeks that don’t fall into the mold of the typical stereotype. We are very proud of who we are and are very comfortable with the term “geek”. However, it hasn’t always been that way for us and we’re sure that others have struggled with finding a comfort zone. We feel that it is important to discuss the observations we have made over the years that have helped us cope with our own lack of self esteem and over time, reach the level of pride we currently have.
The discussion will cover aspects of television, film, music and fashion. We will open with a look into our personal journeys as geeks with participation from the audience. During this time we will delve into the parallels of geekdom and how they apply to the likes of sports, cars and any other hobby that isn’t traditionally seen as “geek”.
Included will be examples such as football enthusiasts wearing the jersey of their favorite player, on their favorite team every Sunday during football season and women who dressed to the nines to go see the first Sex and the City movie. We will compare this behavior to cosplay both in and out of conventions most notably with regard to movie premiers such as Star Wars.
We’ll also discuss how the trend of super hero films over the last decade or so has affected the availability of fashion that conforms to popular culture, how it influences said culture, and how that change has made many people more comfortable putting what they love on display for all to see.

The Eastern Shore Ghostbusters. Photo by Kayla

This panel was a lot of fun. The Loading Snacks guys talked with us about how they first knew when they were “geeks”, if families were supportive of our interests, why we didn’t ‘grow out of’ the things that interested us, and what being a geek vs. a nerd meant to us. The discussion during the panel was a lot of fun, and the guys gave good, insightful answers.

I left the convention already excited for next year. There is no place like a fan convention. No matter your fandom or your interests. Being in a place with other people who are passionate about the things they love is a wonderful feeling. Though you’re all different, you feel like you belong at a fan convention. And in an area like the Eastern Shore of Maryland it can sometimes seem hard to find other fans or people who are passionate about the same things you are. Ocean City Comic Con has met a need that the community in this area has needed for a long time, and it is an event I hope continues to grow and I will definitely be attending again.

The Flash: “Elseworlds, Part 1” Recap, Season 5, Episode 9

The Flash opens up the three-part crossover of Elseworlds and I have to be honest, it’s hilarious! We still get our danger and craziness that we expect from our DC shows, but the switch of Barry and Oliver is so much fun.

Before we get to that though, the show opens with the snippet that aired at the end of each of our shows last week. The Flash from Earth 90 is surrounded by the bodies of other fallen superheroes. He’s the last chance at overcoming The Monitor, but he can’t do it alone. He runs off, presumably to Earth 1.

The Monitor already made his way here though. He meets Dr. John Deegan, who appears to be a psychiatrist with hopeful dreams for the future. He gives his book to John and tells him that it holds the key to transformation. The book basically gives him the power of a god. After suggesting that John “think big,” The Monitor leaves.

After that, we start off with Oliver waking up in Barry and Iris’ apartment. He’s quite confused and nothing gets clearer when he gets a kiss from Iris as she serves him breakfast. When he starts to realize that he’s Barry, he begins to play along. As soon as she leaves, he tests out his speed by running across the living room. Baby steps and all that. Iris returns to give him the Flash ring. He ejects the suit and puts it on Flash style. Looking good, Oliver!

He doesn’t get long to try out his newfound speed because there is a break in at IVO Labs. After missing his stop, Oliver heads back and is a little lost as to what he should do. He does manage to throw a lightning bolt that, while a little crazy, takes out the bad guys. Unfortunately, it also hits a robot that is now awake, but Oliver doesn’t know.

Since “Barry” is acting out of sorts, Caitlin runs some tests, but everything comes back normal. Oliver tells the worried members of Team Flash that he needs to leave and go visit someone who may understand his problem. That person being Oliver Queen.

Of course, Oliver Queen is actually Barry and he is getting his butt kicked by John Diggle. That’s only temporary though as his Green Arrow reflexes kick in and he lays Diggle out. He’s momentarily excited by the realization that he’s now Oliver, but that quickly gives way to seeing this is a problem. Like Oliver, Barry doesn’t get a lot of time to adjust. There’s a fight between rival groups at one of Diaz’s old weapons cache in the Glades. Diggle tells Barry to “suit up.” This leaves Barry trying to figure out how to put it on and asking Diggle, “Do I need help putting this on?”

Barry does get the outfit figure out and he and Diggle head out to the warehouse. While he has the Green Arrow’s skills, he doesn’t have his knowledge. He fires the wrong arrow and ends up having to fight off like a dozen guys. As we know, hand-to-hand combat without his speed is not one of Barry’s strong suits, so he’s super excited. The victory is short-lived when the real Oliver speeds his way through, grabbing Barry and Diggle in the process. When they stop Diggle-as usual- gets sick. The continuity of that fact is awesome!

Barry is still on a high from having new skills, even trying out the legendary salmon ladder. He’s not all that keen to work on getting the switch fixed until Oliver mentions that he woke up in the wrong bed. The fact that Oliver would be sleeping with Iris was enough to get him on board with figuring out how to change back. They go to Team Flash with the news that they are the wrong people, but it is not well-received. No one believes them and they end up locked in the pipeline meta prison. Barry thinks that if they can get free they could get an extrapolator and go to Kara’s Earth to see if she remembers who they really are. This way they will know if it just their Earth that is affected. Luckily, they are two guys who are excellent at escaping.

Oliver says they need to back up the toilet and that will fry the dampener. (We’ll ignore that every single mega-villain that has been put in the prison has never thought about that.) For it to happen though, one of them will have to get their cuffs off. Since Barry has Oliver’s skills, it stands to reason that the ligaments in his hand will be flexible enough for him to dislocate his thumb and get the cuffs off. He’s hesitant, but finally manages it and the dampener gets fried. Once his part is done, it’s Oliver’s turn to learn a new trick. After laughing about Barry’s still dislocated thumb, he manages to phase them through the door.

Free from the prison cell, they go in search of an extrapolator. Iris happens to be in possession of it and she catches them. Barry tells her the story of when he first met her and she believed him when he said his dad did not murder his mom. He asks her to believe him again. She can finally feel it and she does believe him, willingly handing over the extrapolator.

On Earth 38, we’re taken to the Kent Farm in Smallville, KS. Lois Lane is there helping Clark fix up his truck. She’s a sassy thing who also happens to know about Clark’s super alter ego. Kara is there, as well. Clark is letting her hang out at the farm since she had to leave the DEO for not admitting her secret identity.

Barry and Oliver show up, surprising everyone. Thankfully, Kara still remembers them as themselves. This happens to be their first time meeting Clark and Oliver’s reaction is priceless. He starts male posturing, puffing out his chest as if he could actually take on Superman.

Back on Earth 1, the robot Oliver woke up, A.M.A.Z.O. (Anti-Metahuman Adaptive Zutonic Organism), is destroying IVO Labs. Caitlin and Ralph try to take it on, but they fail. What’s worse is that the robot has the ability to assimilate their powers. At least it doesn’t take them away like Cicada. They realize that having the Flash or Green Arrow would be useful, but Iris admits she let them go and she believes them. Luckily, Cisco believes them, too. He admits to vibing a strange man and that combined with the weird weather phenomenon makes him think that Barry and Oliver may very well have been switched.

On the farm, Barry is getting a lesson in shooting his bow, even though he’s already good at it. He manages to anger Oliver when he pulls the same trick on him that Oliver had done to him. While Oliver managed to catch the arrow Barry shot at him, he gets nailed in the back with two arrows from remote-controlled crossbows set up in the field. He gets mad and feels like Barry is treating this whole situation like a joke or a game. Oliver points out that every lesson he’s learned comes with a painful memory and he draws on that darkness. It feeds who he is when he is the Green Arrow. For Barry, it’s the opposite. His power comes from joy. They come to the conclusion that they need to start acting more like each other.

Cisco shows up and says they all believe the guys now. He also tells them they need help with their A.M.A.Z.O. problem. Instead of just getting Barry and Oliver, Kara and Clark decide to come, too. Can we say “Dream Team,” everybody?

They all come back to Earth 1 and proceed to hit A.M.A.Z.O. with everything they got. They keep up a quick rotation to keep it from having time to replicate their powers. Their plans come to a smashing end when Superman torpedoes it into the ground. It’s not that easy to kill though. It comes right back up and replicates their powers anyway. Since it can now phase, they can’t even hit it.

Sherloque says that it’s a computer so they should just “turn it off.” Cisco works on a virus that will disable it while Barry enacts a plan of his own. He sends Oliver off to draw A.M.A.Z.O. back and tells the super cousins to wait. Iris suggests that it may have the same weaknesses as those it cloned powers from, but Barry shocks her by saying they aren’t going to weaken it. “We’re going to send it straight to hell.” How very Oliver of you, Barry!

The virus is delivered to Barry and Oliver gets his hands on A.M.A.Z.O., counteracting it’s phasing with his own. This allows Supergirl and Superman to grab ahold of it and hold it steady. After uttering the Green Arrow catchphrase, Barry fires the arrow with the attached virus, hitting A.M.A.Z.O. in the eye. The whole thing explodes into pieces.

With the danger having passed, Clark heads back to Earth 38, but Kara stays behind to help out. It’s not like she can do much back at her Earth anyway. Iris is upset with Barry for how he acted during the fight with A.M.A.Z.O. She fully believes that he is really her Barry and she asks that when he comes back, he comes back as himself. “You’re the Green Arrow now, but please don’t become Oliver Queen.” Barry promises that he won’t.

Cisco tells Barry and Oliver about the man that he vibed and then shows them. It’s a much more intense vision than before. The man, The Monitor, appears to be speaking directly to them. He tells them that nothing can stop what has been set in motion and that they might as well give up now. Cisco is left with another nose bleed and is extremely freaked out.

Oliver saw enough to draw a sketch of what they saw in the vision. They don’t know who the men in the image are, but he knows the building in the background. It’s in Gotham City and they decide that is where they need to go next.

Our final shot is of Batwoman standing high atop a building, looking over her city.

The next episode is the very next day! One of the best parts of the crossover is not having to wait a week for the next episode. Arrow will be on Monday, December 10th at 8/7c as we continue with Elseworlds and finally meet Batwoman.
