Nerds Gets Cheery: It Feels Like Christmas When You Watch ‘The Muppet Christmas Carol’

Here at Nerds and Beyond, we want to spread the Christmas cheer. Every day this December leading up to Christmas, we are highlighting some of our favorite festive films. One of my all-time favorites is The Muppet Christmas Carol, directed by Brian Henson (son of Jim Henson). I was late to the party with this film as I didn’t watch it until I was in my late teens, but now it doesn’t feel like Christmas until I have.

For anyone who has not come across this masterpiece, it retells the classic Charles Dickens novel A Christmas Carol with the Muppets portraying most of the characters, with the exception of Scrooge, played by Michael Caine. Scrooge hates Christmas (Humbug!) and all the sentiments that accompany it: love, kindness, and charity. On the night of Christmas Eve, he is visited by the ghosts of his old business partners, Jacob and Robert Marley (Statler and Waldorf) who warn him he will be damned for his unkind deeds. Scrooge is then visited by more specters: the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future, who give him insights into the lives of those around him, notably his employee Bob Cratchit (Kermit the Frog) in an attempt to give Scrooge the chance to redeem himself.

Although the film is family friendly, there are some dark moments that may be upsetting to younger children – it never fails to make me sob. However, it is mostly kept light-hearted as the whole tale is hilariously narrated by Gonzo as Charles Dickens and Rizzo the Rat. They provide some of my absolute favorite comic moments throughout the film, from Gonzo using Rizzo as a squeegee to clean a dirty window to Rizzo’s continuous eating – including wax fruit! I still laugh like a child when Gonzo accidentally lights Rizzo’s tail on fire (“light the lamp, not the rat!”), pushes him into a barrel of frozen water, and then emerges with a rat-shaped icicle on a stick.

At the heart of the film is the amazing soundtrack. From the hilarious “Scrooge” to the joyful catchiness of “It Feels Like Christmas,” all of the songs contain messages about Christmas spirit, without being over-the-top cheesy. My favorite, “Bless Us All,” always makes me tear up as the Cratchit family give us the message that no matter our circumstances, as long as we have love and kindness, we can have a wonderful Christmas.

The wonderful blend of puppets and live actors in the Victorian setting sets a lovely childlike tone to the whole story. The amazing talent of the Muppet performers — notably Dave Goelz, Steve Whitmire, Jerry Nelson, and Frank Oz — never fails to astonish me. There are also jokes weaved into the film for fans familiar with The Muppets, for example, Animal being sat at a drum kit but sadly having to delicately play the triangle at Fozziwig’s Christmas Party.

As the film is approaching its 27th anniversary, although some of the effects are dated, the message is timeless. Watching The Muppet Christmas Carol is the equivalent to having a hot bowl of soup in winter; it makes you feel warm and fuzzy on the inside. As the song “It Feels Like Christmas” says: “The message, if we hear it, is make it last all year” (the Christmas message, not the soup).

The Muppet Christmas Carol is currently available to watch on Disney+. Make sure to check back in tomorrow for another Christmas movie recommendation. Merry Christmas!

Disney announced tonight a “two-night, cruise-style itinerary where you’ll become the hero of your own adventure in an experience that surrounds you 24/7 in Star Wars storytelling.” This experience will be called Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser and it’s set to launch at the Walt Disney World Resort in 2021!

Here’s more about it, courtesy of Disney:

Whether you show up via personal vehicle, Disney transportation or by landspeeder, curb-side check-in prepares you to leave Earth behind, jump to lightspeed and begin your Star Wars story. From the Starcruiser Terminal, you will enter an exclusive launch pod for travel up to the Halcyon, your starcruiser in a galaxy far, far away. Through the pod’s viewports, it looks as though you are traveling through space to approach the massive ship that is much too large to land on any planet.

A “spaceport of call” to Black Spire Outpost is included in your itinerary, where special passenger transports take you to the planet Batuu (also known as the destination for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios).

Star Wars news has been flying off the shelves left and right these past couple of weeks as fans eagerly await the premiere of The Rise of Skywalker and frantically Google search Baby Yoda merchandise in between episodes of The Mandalorian. Speaking of The Mandalorian, exciting news has just been announced in relation to the upcoming final chapter of the Skywalker saga.

Okay, no, so it’s not a dream team crossover featuring Pedro Pascal’s bounty hunting Mandalorian space dad and Oscar Isaac’s hotshot Resistance pilot Poe Dameron. However, there are still two exciting things to look forward to. First, Chapter 7 of The Mandalorian will be airing on Disney+ Wednesday, December 18 instead of its usual Friday spot. You’re telling me that we have to wait two less days to see Baby Yoda? Sold. And with that new premiere date comes an exclusive sneak peek of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker!

The date shift makes sense, as The Rise of Skywalker will begin to arrive in theaters on December 18 and officially premieres worldwide on December 20. Meanwhile, make sure to catch Chapter 5 of The Mandalorian exclusively on Disney+ this Friday, December 6!

Leonardo is a new limited series by Frank Spotnitz (The Man in the High Castle) and Steve Thompson (Sherlock).

The show is centered around Leonardo Da Vinci, played by Aidan Turner (The HobbitPoldark), and fictional police detective Stefano Giraldi, played by Freddie Highmore (Finding NeverlandBates Motel). Rounding up the main cast is Matilda De Angelis (The Undoing) as Caterina Da Cermona. The series just started filming this past Monday, and in it we will see the events unfold as Stefano Giraldi investigates Da Vinci as a murder suspect, and thus starts looking into the legendary artist’s past.

Sony has just been announced to co-produce the eight episodes, together with Big Light Productions, Lux Vide, and Rai Fiction. Leonardo will be directed by The Man in the High Castle-director Dan Percival. There is still no word on when and how the series will air, though speculations point to Leonardo reaching audiences sometime during 2020, since that will mark the 500 year anniversary since Leonardo Da Vinci’s death.

Baby Yoda Funko Pop!, Coming to a Galaxy Near You

Coming to Funko, Baby Yoda is!

Sorry, we don’t have the droids you’re looking for, but we can point you in the right direction if you’ve been dutifully hunting down Baby Yoda merchandise.

Funko has officially announced that the Child is the latest addition to their Star Wars Pop! line. As with all Star Wars Funko Pop! figures, the Child will be a bobble-head toy on a Star Wars stand. Features also include his adorable ears (no word on if they will cinematically flop in the wind), a tiny hand that’s probably about to wield the force to save the Mandalorian’s butt once again, and his very fashion-forward robe.

In addition to this standard size Pop!, Funko is also releasing a near-lifesize 10-inch version as well. Think of all the adventures you can go on with him, bounty hunting space dad style — though we can’t promise he’ll behave if you take him for a spaceship ride.

The Child will be available for shipment in early Spring of next year.
