WATCH: Chris Pine Talks the Hollywood Chris Debate, Retro Fashion, and More on ‘Stir Crazy’ With Josh Horowitz

0

In the early days of quarantine, Josh Horowitz (MTV News, Happy Sad Confused podcast) launched his digital interview series titled Stir Crazy on the Comedy Central YouTube channel. Today the final episode of the year was released, and it was none other than Chris Pine — what a Christmas miracle!

Pine’s recent projects include his portrayal of Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman 1984, which drops Christmas day in theaters and on HBO Max and I Am the Night. His upcoming projects in production are Don’t Worry Darling with a star-studded cast including Harry Styles and Florence Pugh, All the Old Knives, Newsflash, and Violence in Action.

In the hilarious, belly aching from laughter interview, Pine and Horowitz talk about retro fashion trends that need to make a return, Pine throws his opinion into the Hollywood Chris’ debate (to which he says he feels like the underdog, so all the support is necessary), and they play “Who Am I?” as well as “Would You Rather.”

‘The Mandalorian’: Din Djarin and Grogu’s Best Dadalorian Moments From Season 2

The Disney+ series The Mandalorian is undoubtedly one of the best things to happen to the Star Wars universe, period. But what makes it so great? Outside of the incredible score, the beautiful cinematography, and the genius creative team behind it all, the answer is simple — an accidental bounty hunter dad and his tiny green son.

In the very first episode of season 1, we were introduced to the skilled and dangerous Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin. He was tasked with capturing a precious bounty for a generous reward, but the bounty itself ended up being worth far more than its weight in beskar. Grogu, previously known as the Child and also referred to as Baby Yoda, stole the hearts of viewers across the world when he made his debut. He clearly won over Din as well, though the “hardened” bounty hunter was apprehensive to admit it at first. And so began the space adventures of Din Djarin and Grogu.

Season 2 of The Mandalorian was a roller coaster of emotions, with Din continuing on his quest to deliver Grogu to the Jedi. As the episodes went on, the full extent of their father-son relationship became increasingly obvious. And not only to Din himself but to all of those around him who made sure to point it out. By the middle of the season, their connection had grown so strong that Ahsoka Tano declared she was unable to train the Child due to his attachment to Din.

While we’re all still recovering from the incredibly emotional moment that the two shared in the finale, we’re here now to look back on the best Dadalorian moments between Din and Grogu throughout season 2.

Din may have perhaps underestimated how mischievous a fifty-year-old toddler could possibly be, and he learned it the hard way. As the two continued on their adventure with Frog Lady aboard the Razor Crest, Grogu was quick to treat himself to the “free snacks” that their passenger brought with her. While trying to save them from the frozen planet they were trapped on, Din was also forced to pull double duty to keep an eye on his naughty child when he kept going back for second helpings … and third … and … whoops. As seen in “Chapter 10: The Passenger.”

“Don’t play with your food.”

You’d never know Din Djarin was entirely brand new to this whole father thing. Just look at how calmly he reacts when his child’s face is being attacked by a squid, he’s a natural! Din evenly chides Grogu, reminding him not to play with his food, before eventually nudging the creature back into the bowl. As seen in “Chapter 11: The Heiress.”

Who needs a mechanic when you can use your tiny green son for ship repairs? Right? No? Maybe not. A for effort, Grogu. We’re still proud of you. This was one of the most in-depth conversations that we’ve seen Din attempt to have with Grogu, and it was equal parts adorable and hilarious watching the bounty hunter repeat himself over and over as he patiently tried to tell Grogu which wires to grab. As seen in “Chapter 12: The Siege.”

Grogu’s snack rampage continued when he sneakily used the Force to steal his classmate’s macarons, which he brought back to the Razor Crest with him. As Din expertly piloted his ship to take out the TIE fighters on Nevarro, Grogu was having the time of his life in the passenger seat. The excitement was short-lived, however, once Grogu realized that what goes down … must come back up. Liquid macarons, incoming! Din deserves all the credit for taking this accidental dad thing in stride because he leaned back to wipe up the puke from Grogu’s robe without missing a beat. As seen in “Chapter 12: The Siege.”

When Ahsoka Tano agreed to test Grogu’s abilities with the Force, she realized that Grogu was incredibly hesitant to use his powers. She engaged another tactic, asking Din to try encouraging the Child instead. Din pulled Grogu’s favorite toy out — the Razor Crest knob — and it worked like a charm. As the Child used the Force to grab the knob, Din proceeded to go full “proud dad at a soccer game” mode. As seen in “Chapter 13: The Jedi.”

As per their agreement, Ahsoka was supposed to take Grogu to train him after Din assisted her in freeing the city of Calodan. When Din returned to the Razor Crest to collect the Child, we were treated to an extremely tender moment as Din prepared himself to say goodbye. Instead of immediately bringing him to Ahsoka, though, Din sat down with Grogu first after waking him up. Paired with the multiple times that Ahsoka pointed out the strength of their connection (which led to her ultimate decision to turn them both down), this episode made it incredibly clear just how much Din has come to care for Grogu. As seen in “Chapter 13: The Jedi.”

What’s In A Name?

Din thankfully learned Grogu’s real name from Ahsoka because the two communicated through the Force. Though he was hesitant to use the name at first, he began testing it out again on their way to Tython. Each time he said “Grogu,” the Child would perk up and look over at him, which in turn made Din chuckle. The Mandalorian is jam-packed with action, drama, and tense scenes, so seeing the bounty hunter genuinely laugh in amusement for once was a very touching moment. As seen in “Chapter 14: The Tragedy.”

“I’ll see you again, I promise.”

Throughout seasons 1 and 2 of The Mandalorian, much emphasis was placed on Din’s Creed as a Mandalorian and the importance of never removing his helmet to show his face. The Way of the Mandalore does not reflect the ideals of all Mandalorians, such as Bo-Katan Kryze, but it’s important to Din nonetheless because it’s all that he’s ever known. The first time that Din removed his helmet in season 2 was in “Chapter 15: The Believer,” when doing so was the only way that he could gain access to the coordinates of Moff Gideon’s light cruiser. Din made this choice, which was certainly one of the most difficult things he’s ever had to go through, solely to save Grogu.

In the next episode, when Luke Skywalker arrived, Din lifted Grogu up for their farewell. Grogu tentatively reached out to touch the bounty hunter’s beskar helmet, and Din made a momentous decision at that moment. Despite being in a room full of people, Din lifted his helmet to show the Child — his child — his face for the very first time. This was an unbelievably heartbreaking moment, even more so when Din closed his eyes as Grogu slowly reached out to touch his face. After Luke took Grogu, Din watched him leave, looking as if he was on the verge of tears. He gave Grogu one last assuring nod before the doors to the lift closed, standing there not as a Mandalorian bounty hunter but as a father saying goodbye to his son. As seen in “Chapter 16: The Rescue.”

Many found themselves questioning whether or not the final moments in the finale were truly goodbye for Din and Grogu, but we’ve chosen to remain hopeful that it’s only temporary. After all, just how long can Luke Skywalker handle the Child eating him out of house and home? And hopefully there are no frog Padawans where he’s taking him. In the meantime, while his son is off at Jedi boarding school, Din will have his hands full anyway with his latest accidental acquisition — the Darksaber. Maybe he’ll find time to stop at the nearest space FedEx to send Grogu the Razor Crest knob, at least.

Seasons 1 and 2 of The Mandalorian are now streaming exclusively on Disney+.

‘His Dark Materials’ Season 2, Episode 6 Recap: “Malice”

0

There are spoilers about the episode in this article.

This week’s episode of His Dark Materials begins by joining the witches after they have gone through the anomaly. They see shapes in the sky and realize that they are the angels. Ruta says that they may be going to Asriel, and he would be able to do anything with the angels on his side. She decides to follow them to seek out Asriel so that she can return with him so that they can destroy the Magisterium together. Serafina remains behind to begin the search for Lyra.

Will is suffering with the wound on his hand and is having restless dreams. He hears his father telling him that the fate of many worlds rests on him and that he has a task ahead of him whilst seeing images of the knife and a ring. Meanwhile, Lyra ventures outside to get water. She hears her name being called, runs inside, and locks the door behind her when she sees Angelica and Paola. Looking through the crack in the door, she sees lots of children appear clearly with the intent of killing her and Will for what happened to Tullio. Lyra quickly wakes Will and they move to the roof to try to escape. Will tries to cut a window for them to escape but they are cornered by the children before he can. Luckily, Serafina appears before any confrontation occurs and scares the children off.

Serafina takes Will and Lyra away from the city and into the forest. Will and Serafina distrust one another, as Will does not want to tell her about the knife and Serafina distrusts how he received such a powerful weapon. Lyra ends up trying to play peacekeeper between the two. Serafina tells them that Will’s wound needs a spell for it to heal.

Mary is in Cittàgazze and is using the I Ching to communicate with the angels to try to find out what she should do next. She receives a cryptic message and it suggests that something will happen soon to put her on the right path. Mary explores the city and is watched by Angelica and Paola, who realize that she is not from this world. Behind Mary we see a faint outline of wings, suggesting that the angels are watching over her and protecting her from the Spectres.

Lyra questions Serafina over whether Will is safe. Serafina says that they must go back to their world. The plants are more powerful over there to heal Will’s wound and she would feel better hiding and protecting Lyra in a world with which she is familiar. Will asks Lyra to ask the alethiometer where his father is. The alethiometer replies that his father is close; he is in this world.

Meanwhile, Lee and Grumman have ventured through Asriel’s anomaly in the balloon. Grumman tells Lee about Cittàgazze. Lee says that he finds Grumman odd because he had heard that shamans could fly and Grumman counters that he can fly because he summoned Lee. Grumman says that he needs to find the bearer so that he can tell him what his task is. Lee asks whether that task includes protecting Lyra and receives the response that the task will protect them all.

Mary is still wandering the city when she is approached by Angelica and Paola. She offers them food and says she won’t tell their parents about it being full of sugar. They begin to trust her and tell her about their lack of parents and the Spectres. They know she is from a different world, like Lyra, but wonder why the Spectres haven’t got to her. When Mary asks about Lyra, Angelica admits that they tried to kill her but that she escaped with Serafina. We are reminded that Angelica and Paola are just children that have been left alone with no guidance when Angelica questions whether trying to kill Lyra was wrong and Paola asks for a hug from Mary. Angelica asks whether Mary can stay and look after the children. Mary says that she has something important to do but that they can come with her and she will take them to the adults in the mountains.

Serafina is still doubting Will’s trustworthiness but Lyra reassures her. She tells Serafina that the alethiometer has told her that she must help find Will’s father. Serafina reluctantly agrees that her task is to protect Lyra and so that may also mean protecting Will. However, to protect Will they must first help heal his wound. The witches perform a spell to help heal Will and leave him to rest. Serafina asks Lyra to check with the alethiometer where Will’s father is. The alethiometer responds simply to keep going up.

At the Magisterium, Fra Pavel visits MacPhail. He has consulted with the alethiometer and it tells him that Mrs. Coulter is looking for her child in another world. However, he admits that she came to see him before Asriel opened up the anomaly and asked him who Lyra Belacqua is. He reveals that Lyra goes by another name and is someone that the witches know about from prophecy. He says that it foretells that Lyra could bring about the downfall of everything and if she is tempted by the serpent, that she will fall and dust and sin will triumph. MacPhail presses him for a name but we cut away from the scene before it is revealed.

Mrs. Coulter and Boreal pass back through the window into Cittàgazze. They are looking for Lyra although Boreal is very nervous that the Spectres will be after them. They come across a man who has been attacked by the Spectres and whilst Boreal remains cautious, Mrs. Coulter is intrigued. Boreal says that it is like the victims have been severed but she thinks that the Spectres are stronger than that and that they could learn from them.

MacPhail addresses the Magisterium and says that the Authority has spoken to him and given them a new direction. Fra Pavel has directed him to a new threat that the world has only seen once before. Their new purpose is to kill Lyra and he has sent troops through the anomaly to do so.

Serafina is checking on Will’s wound again and says that their spellwork is holding up. Her daemon urges her to tell Will something and the daemon reveals that in the prophecy about Lyra, it includes a boy that must travel with her. Serafina is unsure whether Will is that boy, but she says that Lyra thinks he is her responsibility and Lyra must also be his responsibility, as she must be protected.

Mrs. Coulter is examining some vials that she has found when her daemon begins to make anxious noises and leaves the building. She follows it to find Spectres appearing down the street. Boreal is of no use at all and retreats into the building, locking the door behind him. Mrs. Coulter’s daemon begins to screech, however she breathes and focuses and her daemon quiets and seems to go into a trance. Mrs. Coulter approaches the Spectres and they begin to surround her. She reaches out her hand but the Spectre retreats before she touches it. She waves her hand and the Spectre in front of her divides into two.

Courtesy of HBO.

Above the city, Lee can see the swarm of Spectres below. Grumman says that if they are that close to the tower, then the knife has moved. Lee wants to land, as he believes Lyra may be in trouble down there, but Grumman argues that the Spectres would kill them and then they would be of no use to anyone. They decide to go further over the forest as he believes the knife bearer is no longer in the city. Lee notices that Magisterium airships have come through the anomaly and are approaching them.

Boreal comes out of the building and Mrs. Coulter waves for the Spectres to leave and they obey her. Boreal is shocked that she can control them and she says that they should go celebrate. The two celebrate with some wine as Mrs. Coulter pours him a glass. Boreal questions how she controls them and she responds that they consume what makes them human and so she just suppressed herself and hid that from them. Boreal says that with this ability they should be able to easily find Lyra and the knife. He wants them to share everything, as he sees her as an equal. She kisses him and says that they should drink to that. Boreal begins talking about the knife again but begins to trail off, struggling to speak. She taunts him by telling him to continue. She then tells him that he has small ideas and would only have held her back; he has never been her equal. Her daemon also watches as his snake daemon writhes in pain. He eventually collapses back in his chair, a tear rolls down his cheek and he draws his last breath as his daemon evaporates.

Courtesy of HBO.

The airships are gaining on the balloon. Lee becomes frustrated that Grumman only seems to be able to control the weather when they could do with some guns or defenses. Grumman summons a storm, which Lee becomes frustrated with as he can’t pilot well in a storm. He admits to his daemon, Hester, that they will have to trust him for Lyra’s sake.

Lyra, Will and the witches are still journeying up the mountain. They hear noises in the passage ahead of them and then Spectres attack one of the witches. Will manages to save her by brandishing the knife and scaring them away.

Back on the balloon, Lee is thrilled to see one of the airships explode as it is struck by lightning from Grumman’s storm. However, there are still another two airships that are firing at them. We then get to see more of Grumman’s powers as he controls birds to attack one of the airships, causing it to crash. The remaining airship appears to turn to retreat but still fires at them. The gunfire hits their gas canister, causing the balloon to crash into the forest below.

The episode was action-filled and has brought all of the characters together in the same world, heading for the same mountain as we head into the finale. Catch the finale when His Dark Materials airs Monday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.

It’s a Bumpy Ride in First Look at ‘9-1-1’ Season 4 in New Winter Preview

0

2020 has been quite the dumpster fire and there is no show that will symbolize that better than season 4 of FOX’s first responder series 9-1-1. The network has released a 20-minute winter preview of all of their shows airing in the new year, and with 9-1-1 and its spin-off series 9-1-1: Lone Star airing back-to-back on Monday nights for the first time ever, 2021 is sure to have an explosive start.

Angela Bassett, who plays Sergeant Athena Grant Nash, previews that when the season opens, there will be a dam break, mudslide. Athena is back on the force after the trauma she’s experienced at the end of the previous season and she is seen helping a woman outside of a nearly-demolished house, trying to wave down a helicopter for help. Meanwhile, Jennifer Love Hewitt, who portrays Maddie Buckley, mentions that Maddie is pregnant during the COVID pandemic and Ryan Guzman, who plays Eddie Diaz, expands saying they come into the world of COVID and Chimney, played by Kenneth Choi, doesn’t know how to interact with his pregnant girl and he’s struggling himself.

Angela Bassett in ‘9-1-1’, courtesy of FOX.

Hewitt also says that fans are going to learn a lot more about everyone in this upcoming season and Guzman notes that there will be a lot more secrets. Just like with the other seasons, there will be funny moments in the midst of all the chaos. And as if on cue, a clip of a scene shows a guy stuck in mud who perfectly describes how this year has been. “2020 has been a dumpster fire.”

According to Oliver Stark, who some may know as Evan “Buck” Buckley, the emergencies are getting bigger and the drama is getting deeper. Buck angrily tells someone, assuming it could be his parents who we will finally meet in the new season, that nothing he did was good enough. The new season will also involve more of Michael’s new relationship with a doctor he met at the end of the previous season, and calls will include a baby, more search and rescue, and more than likely will expand on what May wanted to tell Maddie at her graduation party in the season 3 finale.

Season 4 of 9-1-1 premieres on Monday, January 18 at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT, followed by the season 2 premiere of 9-1-1: Lone Star. The first three seasons of 9-1-1 are streaming now on Hulu.
