Interview: Sam Heughan, Richard Rankin, Caitríona Balfe and the Cast of ‘Outlander’ at NYCC

It’s October in New York and that means New York Comic Con is here! Members of our staff were lucky enough to talk to some of the cast from Outlander about the upcoming season 7, part 2.

Editor’s note: this interview contains spoilers for Outlander. This interview was also edited for length and clarity.

The last time we saw Jamie, Claire, Roger, Briana, and Ian, they were scattered across time and place either returning home to Scotland to return to Lallybroch, or heading back to the 1700s in search of Jemmy, Briana, and Roger’s son who was kidnapped from the 1970s and thrown back in time. The last scene was Claire and Jamie on a ship with the Scottish coastline in view, a welcome scene after almost 4 seasons being away from their beloved home country.

Nerds and Beyond: With the show having wrapped up for the entire series, what is a memory off-set that you think will always stick with you?

Richard Rankin: I think one of my favorite memories, in recent times anyway, was when we all went to Edinburgh to the Taylor Swift concert. That was quite a night. That was a blast. And, yeah, lots of funny stories from that night that I probably won’t go into, but that was a good time.

Sam Heughan: I think honestly, there’s a bit of bittersweetness of us even being here this week. It’s like we’ve got into this cycle over 11 years, or eight years, of shooting a show for a season and then going and doing the promo and the press. It’s the time when we have a great time and we mess around and we get to just hang out and we’re realizing being here that this is probably our last, or penultimate, [New York] Comic Con together, and it will feel very different next time. It’s like, “Oh sh*t, it’s fun to hang out and have all those experiences and will that happen again? Will I get on another show or another movie that has that cycle?” I don’t think you will, because will you be in a show that even runs that long again?

Nerds and Beyond: With the show wrapping up, I know we still have the second half of season seven and season eight next year, but is there anything from set that you guys maybe permanently borrowed?

Sophie Skelton: That’s such a good way of phrasing it. [laughs]

John Bell: Well, we were kind of sniffing around a couple things, right? And then when the bosses heard of that, it was like, locked down. Yeah, it’s like, nothing’s going, so there might have been some Mohawk warrior skills involved in finding some things to take. I hope I don’t get anyone in any trouble saying this, but I do have my bow and arrows. I’m kind of building a bit of an armory in my house. I’ve got my arrow from The Hobbit and I’ve got my Tomahawk from Outlander. So it’s gonna look like one of those castle walls in Scotland with all the armory on the wall.

Sophie Skelton: This season I was practicing in the armory, and they had kind of noted that Briana doesn’t have her own gun. So he [the armorer] was like, “Should we give Briana a gun?” So I’ve been using that this season. The armorer wanted me to have it at the end [of the show]. But production got wind of everyone trying to sneak stuff and then they did the lockdown. So, the next time I went to the armory, he [the armorer] was like, “JB (John Bell), got away with it. He got his out in time.” I was like, “Oh, man, I kind of want everyone to sign my rifle.” To be fair though, once we got wind of reshoots, I was really glad I didn’t steal the rifle.

Nerds and Beyond: Caitríona, it was mentioned that there’s a Lord John storyline coming up and I don’t want to ask about that, because I know you can’t give any spoilers, but how was it filming with David Berry again?

Caitriona: It was amazing filming with David. That storyline is intense and it wasn’t easy stuff but working with David was great. I can’t say much because yeah, spoilers. Yeah, he was amazing. He’s so good though.
