Why You Should Watch ‘My Lady Jane’
Occasionally, a show comes along that is a fan favorite and checks all the boxes to become your next comfort show. Prime Video’s My Lady Jane has quickly become that special series for many viewers. Based on the book of the same name by Cynthia Hand, this historical dramedy has many things to draw in fans. With a cast stacked with breakout talents, classic romance troupes, historical figures, and comedy, you will wonder why you haven’t already watched this fresh new series.
Lady Jane Grey is already known as the infamous “Nine-Day Queen.” In this version, history is being rewritten by the women! Emily Bader leads the cast as our beloved Jane. Edward Bluemel plays Lord Guildford Dudley, Jane’s arranged husband. Bader and Bluemel have a chemistry that jumps through the screen and pulls on your heartstrings. I won’t give any spoilers, but trust me, Jane and Guildford will have you rooting for them until the last scene. Our two love birds are surrounded by a killer cast of comedic talents like Rob Brydon, Anna Chancellor, and Dominic Cooper. Alongside these two fresh leads are many other new faces. Jordan Peters, Henry Ashton, Kate O’Flynn, and Abbie Hern bring to life so many colorful and unique characters! It is rare to find a show that convinces viewers to love and care for all the supporting characters, but again, My Lady Jane is just that good.
One reason why the show has built such a passionate fanbase so quickly is because this is a series that was created by women with the female view in mind. Creator Gemma Burgess, alongside multiple female producers, made a show that champions strong, smart women. In the Tudor era, women held little to no power over their choices, My Lady Jane takes the opportunity to show how even in those circumstances, these women took their lives into their own hands. Another reason why this series is special is the romance element. Often in media, we witness romantic situations from the male point of view. Burgess made sure that the steamy moments were seen through the female lenses and brought a sweet sincereness to these moments that is rarely seen.
My Lady Jane also has a fantasy element that broadens the show past just another historical romance. While this series rewrites history, it also adds Ethians, people born with the ability to change into an animal form. Henry the Eighth began a war against Ethians, attempting to eradicate them. This war, and the deeper theme of taught discrimination, is passed down to his children and is a major component of the series. With storylines that include tropes like enemies to lovers, historical retelling, fantastical creatures, and strong female characters, it is easy to see why this show is truly a fresh new series that deserves our attention.
My Lady Jane has all the elements to become a classic historical romance favorite. This show makes viewers laugh, cry, cheer, and root for the underdog. Sadly, Prime Video has chosen to cancel the series after just one season. This series has generated a large passionate fanbase quickly and has a campaign alongside a petition in motion to try to save the beloved series from cancelation. Visit the website for more information or find the petition here, at the time of this publication, the petition was nearing 80,000 signatures! Even with the cancellation, I could not recommend a show more highly than My Lady Jane. Stars Emily Bader and Edward Bluemel have several big roles lined up like People We Meet On Vacation and The Seven Dials Mystery, so keep an eye on these rising stars!
My Lady Jane is now streaming on Prime Video.
