The Academy Award-winning masterpiece The Boy and the Heron has received its physical and digital release dates!

For those looking to grab a physical copy, the film will be released on 4K UHD™ + Blu-ray™, Blu-ray™ + DVD, and in a Limited Edition Steelbook™ that includes 4K UHD™ + Blu-ray™, featuring Dolby Vision plus Dolby Atmos, on July 9. This marks the first time that a Studio Ghibli film has been released on 4K UHD.

Additionally, the film will be getting an HD release on all major on-demand digital platforms, as well as in 4K with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos where available, on June 25.

All versions will offer the film in its original Japanese language format with English subtitles, as well as the English dub. The dub includes the voices of Christian Bale, Dave Bautista, Gemma Chan, Willem Dafoe, Karen Fukuhara, Mark Hamill, Robert Pattinson and Florence Pugh.

The Boy and the Heron follows young Mahito, who, after losing his mother during the war in a hospital fire, moves to his family’s estate in the countryside. There, a series of mysterious events lead him to a secluded and ancient tower, home to a mischievous gray heron. When Mahito’s new stepmother disappears, he follows the gray heron into the tower, and enters a fantastical world shared by the living and the dead. As he embarks on an epic journey with the heron as his guide, Mahito must uncover the secrets of this world and the truth about himself.

Special features will include:

  • Feature-Length Storyboards
  • Interview with Composer Joe Hisaishi
  • Interview with Producer Toshio Suzuki
  • Interview with Supervising Animator Takeshi Honda
  • Drawing with Takeshi Honda

The Boy and the Heron is an original, hand-drawn animated tale written and directed by Studio Ghibli’s co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki — his first feature film in 10 years. The film is produced by co-founder Toshio Suzuki and features a musical score from Joe Hisaishi.

Wholly a love letter to the illustrious catalog of Ghibli films that came before it, The Boy and the Heron is a moving story that has received glowing reviews and awards since its release last December. It’s also the first Studio Ghibli film to be released in IMAX premium formats.
