A trailer for Pedro Almodóvar’s newest short film, Strange Way of Life, starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke has been released.

The LGBTQ Western will premiere Out-of-Competition at the Cannes Film Festival this May and the screening will be followed by a Q&A with Almodóvar and his team. The short was shot in Spain last summer and is the director’s second English-speaking film.

“A man rides a horse across the desert that separates him from Bitter Creek. He comes to visit Sheriff Jake. Twenty-five years earlier, both the sheriff and Silva, the rancher who rides out to meet him, worked together as hired gunmen. Silva visits him with the excuse of reuniting with his friend from his youth, and they do indeed celebrate their meeting, but the next morning Sheriff Jake tells him that the reason for his trip is not to go down the memory lane of their old friendship.”

Almodóvar has given nothing but the above synopsis away, teasing some twists and turns in the short film’s already mysterious plot. Hawke will play Sheriff Jake while Pascal takes on the role of Silva. Other cast members include Pedro Casablanc, Manu Ríos, George Steane, José Condessa, Jason Fernández, Sara Sálamo, Ohiana Cueto, and Daniela Medina.

After the premiere at Cannes, there is no official word on a wide release.
