Ben Barnes and Ian McKellen will be doing a historical thriller together! The two have been cast in The Critic, directed by Anand Tucker. This film will be a must-see paired with a script from Academy Award nominee Patrick Marber.
The Critic will take viewers back to 1930s London as we follow Jimmy Erskine, played by the one and only Sir Ian McKellen. Jimmy is widely known as one of the harshest newspaper critics around. This leads upcoming actress Nina Land (Gemma Arterton) to do whatever it takes to earn his approval. Along the way, it seems that David Brooke, played by Mark Strong, is set to make Jimmy’s life more difficult. David happens to be the new owner of the newspaper Jimmy writes for. We will have to wait and see why David seems to have his sights set on Jimmy.
Viewers will soon see that Jimmy isn’t the only one with problems. Nina will find herself in a tangled web on her quest to win Jimmy’s favor. Surrounded by blackmail, lies, and murder, how will she find someone to trust? This thriller will introduce us to more unique characters played by Lesley Manville and the amazingly talented Ben Barnes.
Barnes has been very busy lately with the second season of the Netflix hit show Shadow and Bone and Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. Fans will also be hearing more of Barnes’ voice as he has recently lent it to the audiobook Demon In The Wood, as well as his first EP, Songs For You. Barnes always brings class and depth to his characters, so it will be exciting to see what his character in The Critic will be.
The Critic is currently in production and will release more information soon. Fans of McKellen can catch the Academy Award nominee in his most recent work, The Good Liar, on Apple TV and Prime Video. Make sure to follow Nerds & Beyond for all new updates!
