NBC Medical Drama ‘New Amsterdam’ Ending With Season 5

NBC

NBC announces its hit medical drama New Amsterdam will be coming to an end after its fifth season.

The series stars Ryan Eggold, who plays Dr. Max Goodwin, the new medical director at New York’s oldest public hospital. Goodwin is dead set on breathing new life into his understaffed and underfunded hospital while breaking the status quo and challenging the system.

New Amsterdam is currently in its fourth season and renewed for the 2022-23 season as part of a three-year pickup. The fifth and final season will also be the series’s shortest season, with only 13 episodes for a series total of 92 episodes, as Deadline reported.

The decision came after the drama began slipping in the ratings ranking below most NBC drama’s. However, New Amsterdam still holds a respectable viewership with 7.2 million this season.

The fourth season of New Amsterdam follows Max after leaving his position at the hospital to be with Dr. Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) in the United Kingdom. However he returns to challenge his successor Dr. Veronica Fuentes (Michelle Forbes), who is undoing the changes Max had put in place.

The series stars Eggold, Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Tyler Labine, and Anupam Kher. New Amsterdam is currently on break, but new episodes will return on Tuesday, April 19 at 10 p.m. EST on NBC. All episodes are streaming on Peacock.
