HBOMax Orders ‘The Batman’ Spin-Off Limited Series Centered On Underworld Kingpin The Penguin

Matt Reeves’ The Batman released less than a week ago on March 4, and fans of the detective-noir film have already received confirmation of their next piece of art coming from this newly-birthed franchise.

A spin-off limited series following The Penguin is confirmed to be in the works from HBOMax. The series will star Colin Farrell, who has wowed audiences with his performance as Oswald Cobblepot in The Batman despite being completely unrecognizable due to the efforts of an immensely talented hair and makeup team.

The series will be executive produced by Reeves, Dylan Clark, Farrell, Daniel Pipski, Adam Kassanand, and Lauren LeFranc. LeFranc, who previously wrote for Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD will also serve as the showrunner for this project.

“The world that Matt Reeves created for The Batman is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot,” Farrell said in the press release from HBO (via Deadline). “I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin. Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.”

Since this project is in the early stages, there isn’t much confirmed information, so be sure to check back for updates as this limited series comes to life. You can find our spoiler-free review of The Batman here, and watch the film exclusively running in theaters now.
