Issa Rae Joins ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2’ Cast

A new superhero is swinging into the Spider-Verse! Issa Rae has been cast as Spider-Woman in the upcoming sequel to the blockbuster 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

She joins Shameik Moore (Miles Morales/Spiderman) and Hailee Steinfeld (Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen) as they return to voice the characters from the original movie. Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Mitchells vs. The Machines) have written the script for the new movie.

In the comics, Spider-Woman is the superhero name for Jessica Drew, who is exposed to radiation from Uranium and is given a serum made of spider blood after she gets sick as a child. The serum gives her abilities that are very similar to Spider-Man’s, with the addition of the ability to glide without the use of a web.

Issa Rae currently stars in Insecure and A Black Lady Sketch Show, and also serves as a producer on both shows.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 will be in theaters October 7, 2022.
