Disney Announces List of New Live-Action Remakes

As part of Disney Investor’s Day, Disney has announced multiple new live-action remakes of classics, including giving further information on the ones already announced, including Pinocchio, Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, and Jungle Cruise.

Jungle Cruise, the new film based on the popular Disney Park ride, is coming to theaters in July 2021. The film stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Emily Blunt, Edgar Ramirez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti.

Disney announced a prequel to the live-action The Lion King is in development from Barry Jenkins, director of Oscar-winning film, Moonlight. Hans Zimmer, Pharrell Williams, and Nicholas Britell will provide the music!

Disney rounds out the cast for their new live-action of The Little Mermaid. Halle Bailey will star as Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, and Javier Bardem as King Triton. Rob Marshall is directing the film, and it will feature music from the animated original and new music by Al Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Next up, Disney announces that David Lowery is directing Peter Pan & Wendy, a new Disney+ Original. Grown-ish‘s Yara Shahidi will be playing Tinker Bell while Jude Law has been cast as Captain Hook.

Also coming to Disney+ is a new live-action retelling of the beloved Disney classic, Pinocchio, starring Tom Hanks and directed by Robert Zemeckis.
