Warner Bros. confirmed today that Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen will be joining the cast of the third Fantastic Beasts film from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter as the menacing Dark Wizard Gellert Grindelwald after the departure of Johnny Depp, who has played the character in the previous two films.

Mikkelsen is no stranger to beloved franchises. The actor has appeared in the Star Wars Universe as the brilliant Galen Erso in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, then he stepped into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the villain Kaecilius in Doctor Strange, and of course, he graced the screens as Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the cult classic television series Hannibal that aired on NBC for three seasons.

The project is currently filming in London and sees the return of Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, Katherine Waterston as Tina Goldstein, Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski, Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein, Ezra Miller as Credence/Aurelius Dumbledore, and Jude Law as Professor Albus Dumbledore.

Fantastic Beasts 3 is set to open on July 15, 2022 after being delayed from its original November 2021 date.
