The COVID-19 pandemic may have all but completely stripped us of the theater-going experience, but not all is lost. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is one of the few new films this year able to have a theatrical release. Cities with a current theatrical run for Ma Rainey’s include Atlanta, GA; Miami, FL; Boston, MA; Indianapolis, IN; San Francisco, CA; and St. Louis, MO among others. Set in Chicago 1927, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom follows Ma Rainey, “the Mother of Blues,” during a recording session when tension begins to form between her, her horn player Levee, and white management determined to control her. It stars Viola Davis, the late Chadwick Boseman, Colman Domingo, Michael Potts, Glynn Turman, Dusan Brown, and Taylour Paige. The screenplay is adapted by Ruben Santiago-Hudson from the August Wilson play and directed by George C. Wolfe.
