After releasing first look images and character posters, Netflix has released the official trailer for the upcoming film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The film takes place in Chicago in 1927. It follows Ma Rainey, the “Mother of Blues,” during a recording session as tensions begin to form between her, her horn player Levee, and white management attempting to control her. It stars Viola Davis as Ma Rainey, the late Chadwick Boseman as Levee, Colman Domingo, Michael Potts, Glynn Turman, Dusan Brown, and Taylour Paige. The screenplay is adapted by Ruben Santiago-Hudson from the August Wilson play. George C. Wolfe directs.

The trailer provides a more rounded glimpse of what we can expect to see from the film. We see Davis and Boseman fall easily into their roles, setting the stage for what’s to come with their characters. We’re also introduced to the rest of the band, the gorgeous set and costumes, and, of course, get a little taste of the soundtrack integral to the story.

Watch the trailer below, and let the blues transport you back to another era. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom will release on Netflix globally on December 18.
