Set against the backdrop of 1927 Chicago, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom focuses on Blues singer Ma Rainey (dubbed “Mother of Blues”) during a recording session as tensions arise between her, her horn player, and white management determined to try and control her. The film is based on the award winning play by August Wilson. The screenplay is written by Ruben Santiago-Hudson and directed by George C. Wolfe.
