Netflix has released first look stills for its upcoming film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Set in 1927 Chicago, the film follows singer Ma Rainey, the “Mother of the Blues,” and the tensions that arise between her, her ambitious horn player, and the white management set on trying to control her. It is based on the award-winning play by August Wilson, with the screenplay by Ruben Santiago-Hudson. George C. Wolfe directs.
The newly released photos from Netflix feature stars Viola Davis (Ma Rainey) and the late Chadwick Boseman (Levee) in his last completed project. We get a glimpse at the gorgeous costumes and can already tell Davis and Boseman will shine in their roles. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom will release on Netflix on December 18. Check out the photos below!
