Ryan Murphy, new Netflix executive and creator of hit shows such as Glee and American Horror Story, announced that he will be turning The Prom into a huge movie event for Netflix. He revealed the news at a special performance of the musical he hosted on April 9 that benefited HMI (The Hetrick-Martin Institute), GLAAD, and The Trevor Project. He spoke more about his excitement on his Instagram.

The Prom is one of the most uplifting, heartfelt and special musicals I have ever seen on Broadway. It’s truly an original that celebrates the underdog and says in a loving spectacular way that LGBTQ rights are human rights. I feel a special connection to it because it’s set in Indiana, and that’s where I grew up, too…I’m bringing [The Prom] producers Bill Damaschke and Dori Berinstein and the amazing creative team with me (including) Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw, Tony Award winner Bob Martin, Tony award nominee Matthew Sklar and Tony Award nominee Chad Beguelin.

This Netflix adaptation is set to debut in September 2020. In the meantime, if you find yourself in NYC, do yourself a favor and head over to the Longacre Theatre and see this musical. It will have you laughing, tearing up, and bursting with joy and hope for “how the world could one day be!”
