The highly-anticipated trailer for Project Hail Mary, the film adaptation of Andy Weir’s critically acclaimed 2021 novel, is finally here!
The film stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a schoolteacher turned astronaut who wakes up from a coma with amnesia and discovers he’s alone on a spaceship, and who then faces a desperate mission to save humanity.
The film is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the duo behind such films as The Lego Movie, the Spider-Verse franchise, and 21 & 22 Jump Street. While those films leaned into comedy, what they all have in common is heart, a quality that is also on full display in the Project Hail Mary teaser.
The trailer opens with Ryland waking up disoriented on a spaceship, sporting a long, scraggly beard, and having no idea how he got there. It then intersperses flashbacks to his life as a teacher and his recruitment into the Project Hail Mary program, highlighting his journey from an ordinary guy to a reluctant hero. It also teases epic shots of space and even reveals Rocky, Ryland’s alien ally. And while the visuals are undeniably cool, what truly stands out is the trailer’s emphasis on character-driven moments – glimpses that suggest this adaptation will be something special. It hints at powerful themes like sacrifice, survival, and the surprising connections that can form in the unlikeliest of places.
Even just judging by the trailer alone, it’s clear Gosling makes a fantastic Ryland, bringing vulnerability, humor, resilience, and yes, grace, to the role.
The Project Hail Mary trailer doesn’t just promise a visually stunning sci-fi story; it strikes a perfect balance between science and deeply human stakes, which Weir is a master of.
Set for release on March 20, 2026, Project Hail Mary already looks like it could join the ranks of modern sci-fi classics, and we can’t wait to see more!
